History
Third Great Ninja War
Konoha entered the conflict as the resource-rich victor of the Second Great Ninja War. Its gains made it the focal point of pressure from the other major villages, while Hiruzen Sarutobi refused to concede those benefits. Despite the loss of Konoha's White Fang, the village retained major forces including Orochimaru, Jiraiya, and the rising Minato Namikaze. 8
The village adopted wartime security measures as hostilities escalated: a massive Sensory Barrier covered Konoha, its entrance was guarded by two squads, and an Anbu squad watched from concealment. 50
Konoha defeated the Sand Village in a major battlefield victory while deploying only part of its forces. The death of Sand elder Chiyo at the hands of Hatake Feng Ye—then ten years old—made both Feng Ye and Minato renowned as the Silver Flash and Golden Flash. 104
The village later faced the Cloud Village under the Third Raikage. Hiruzen personally led the front, supported by Tsunade and Feng Ye, to deter a full-scale assault. After Feng Ye killed the Third Raikage, Konoha launched an offensive that forced the Cloud forces out of the Land of Fire. 112 126
Succession and Internal Politics
Minato Namikaze succeeded Hiruzen as the Fourth Hokage through a notably peaceful transition, supported by Orochimaru despite the latter's own prior candidacy. 172
Tensions persisted between Konoha's leadership, the Uchiha Clan, and Feng Ye's faction. Danzō attempted to control Feng Ye, while Hiruzen rejected that approach. 171
Feng Ye was proposed as Fifth Hokage with broad support from Konoha's major clans and most attending shinobi. He exposed advisers Utatane Koharu and Homura Mitokado for embezzling several billion ryo in village funds and ordered their interrogation. 207
After Feng Ye's succession, Hiruzen's political influence was removed, and vacant posts were filled with personnel selected from Konoha's clans. 208 Feng Ye was formally inaugurated as the Fifth Hokage ten days later. 210
Fifth Hokage Era
Pain's attempt to infiltrate Konoha during Feng Ye's inauguration failed. Feng Ye destroyed Konan's falling explosive tags, then instantly defeated the Heavenly and Human Paths of Pain; Konoha's underground White Zetsu were subsequently cleared. 211 212
Konoha annexed the Land of Rain after the collapse of the New Rain Village. It occupied the Daimyo's mansion, integrated Rain shinobi, guarded towns, and used propaganda and protection efforts to reduce resistance among the population. 217
The village's negotiations with the Stone Village over the Land of Rain ended with Stone withdrawal and compensation to Konoha. The Land of Rain was then formally incorporated into the Land of Fire. 220
Government and Infrastructure
Hokage Building
The Fifth Hokage's original new building had five above-ground floors:
| Floor | Function |
|---|---|
| Fifth | Hokage's private residence, protected by a barrier and excluded from surveillance |
| Fourth | Hokage's office, guarded by Uchiha and Hyuga shinobi; stored important items including the Scroll of Seals |
| Third | Central monitoring room overseeing surveillance across Konoha |
| Second | Finance and personnel departments, overseen by Shikaku Nara |
| First | Mission department |
Following the unification era, the building was rebuilt into a seven-floor complex. Its top two floors served as the Hokage's residence, while the lower levels housed the Hokage's office and Sealing Chamber, conference rooms, departmental offices, and the mission-request area. 311
Administrative Approach
Under Feng Ye, Konoha ceased suppressing its major clans as a matter of policy. Talent was prioritized for important positions, and the Hokage publicly treated every Konoha shinobi as part of the village regardless of clan affiliation. 257
Shikaku Nara managed major administrative functions, including finance, personnel, and the organized integration of shinobi from annexed villages. 210 310
Security and Military
Village Defenses
- Konoha maintained a village-wide Sensory Barrier during the Third Great Ninja War, with guarded entrances and hidden Anbu surveillance. 50
- The Nine-Tails became a visible guardian of the village after Feng Ye subdued it; Konoha residents gradually treated it as a guardian beast rather than a feared calamity. 206
- During Kaguya Otsutsuki's Infinite Tsukuyomi, Feng Ye used the Reincarnated Tenseigan to prevent the God Tree's influence from entering Konoha. 323
Shadow Guard
Feng Ye planned the Shadow Guard as a nine-division organization intended to supplement Konoha's existing combat strength. 213
Known leadership assignments after its establishment included:
| Division | Leadership |
|---|---|
| First Squad | Kakashi Hatake |
| Third Squad | Shisui Uchiha |
| Fourth Squad | Rin Nohara; Shizune as vice-captain |
| Fifth Squad | Konan |
| Eighth Squad | Inoichi Yamanaka |
| Ninth Squad | Might Guy as vice-captain |
The Second and Seventh Squads were responsible for Konoha's internal security during the Hinata incident. 255
Major Military Operations
- Land of Rain occupation — Konoha sent elite jonin to annex and stabilize the Land of Rain after defeating Akatsuki's local forces. 216 217
- Sand Village campaign — The Shadow Guard opened the Fourth Great Shinobi War by demanding Sand's surrender, then routed its forces after resistance began. 266 267 268
- Reanimation crisis — Konoha and Sand shinobi fought reanimated former Kage and historic shinobi until Feng Ye arrived to intervene. 274 276 277
- Stone Village conquest — Konoha later defeated and absorbed the Stone Village. 307
- Mist Village integration — The Hidden Mist Village voluntarily became subordinate to Konoha after negotiations with Mei Terumi. 310

Population and Society
Konoha expanded to more than three times its original scale as it accepted residents from former Stone and Mist territories. 311
By the time of Kaguya's Infinite Tsukuyomi, Konoha had approximately 40,000 shinobi: over 10,000 in the village, about 10,000 on missions, and another 10,000 stationed across former Stone and Mist territories to establish additional Konoha villages. 323
The first Chunin Exams held after unification included genin from the former Four Great Shinobi Villages, marking a further stage in their integration into Konoha's system. 329
