Background

Tongtian's policy of teaching without discrimination made the Intercepting Sect a refuge for disciples of sharply varying character. The sect consequently gained members such as Ma Yuan, who consumed human hearts, and outer disciples devoted to slaughter. Li Changsheng later regarded Tongtian's lax discipline and favoritism toward Celestial of Fixed Light as central causes of the sect's disorder. 1 6

After Li Changsheng killed Celestial of Fixed Light and escaped Golden Turtle Island, Tongtian treated the incident as both a personal humiliation and an attack on the Intercepting Sect's standing. His response escalated from a sect-wide hunt to repeated attempts to enlist other Saints and outside factions against his former disciple. 5 11 48

Personality

Tongtian is intensely concerned with face, authority, and the reputation of his sect. Li Changsheng's escape and subsequent killings repeatedly provoke him into open fury, often overriding restraint. 5 17 47

His treatment of disciples is contradictory. He initially rejects using the Three Heavens as bait and later kneels rather than continue watching disciples die, yet he also suppresses Yunxiao's cultivation, imprisons the Three Heavens, and plans to use disciples and the Human Race to draw out Li Changsheng. 72 81 118 119 132

Repeated defeats make Tongtian more cautious. After being forced to kneel, he refuses Laozi and Yuan Shi's proposed joint attack because he considers another failure catastrophic for the Intercepting Sect. 165

His insecurity is particularly evident in his treatment of talented disciples. Alongside Yuan Shi, he places a restriction in Golden Spirit Holy Mother's body that prevents her spiritual energy from remaining within her body, fearing that her advancement could surpass them. 356 358
