Background

Warring States Period

Tobirama first appears during a confrontation between the Senju and Uchiha clans. Kyosuke immediately attacks and captures him, prompting Hashirama to intervene for his younger brother 37.

He grows deeply suspicious of Madara and rejects Hashirama’s hope of friendship with the Uchiha. Convinced that Madara is manipulating his brother, Tobirama repeatedly advocates assassinating him and eventually attempts the killing himself with Water Severing Wave 74. Kyosuke intercepts the attack, overwhelms Tobirama in close combat, and leaves him severely injured 74.

Despite his hostility toward the Uchiha, Tobirama follows Hashirama in defying Senju Butsuma to reinforce the Uchiha during the Land of Wind invasion 107. He later ambushes Otsutsuki Sugito with Mutual Exploding Tags, but abandons the technique rather than die alongside the Uchiha forces caught in its range 127.

Hashirama’s Rise

Following Butsuma’s death, Tobirama uses force and intimidation to secure Hashirama’s appointment as Senju clan head. He threatens Elder Senju Domoto, casts Bringer-of-Darkness over the ancestral hall, and establishes himself as the “shadow” who will handle the measures Hashirama refuses to take 137.

During the renewed Senju–Uchiha conflict, he continues developing techniques and serves as a dangerous battlefield commander. His Flying Thunder God Technique allows him to escape Madara’s attacks, but Kyosuke later outmaneuvers and badly wounds him using superior space-time ninjutsu 174 183.

Personality

Tobirama is calculating, forceful, and intensely protective of Senju interests. He favors preemptive strikes, assassination, political manipulation, and forbidden techniques when direct confrontation is disadvantageous 74 194 295.

His distrust of the Uchiha defines many of his choices. He views Madara and Kyosuke as threats to Hashirama and later attempts to fracture the Uchiha–Hyuga alliance through rumor and political pressure 74 208 252. Even so, he recognizes Kyosuke’s creativity and is privately impressed by techniques such as Shadow Clone and Flying Thunder God 78 137.

Tobirama’s loyalty to Hashirama and the Senju Clan is genuine. He supports Hashirama’s leadership through intimidation, remains behind to defend the clan during its decline, and prioritizes preserving surviving Senju members when the clan is destroyed 137 298 301.

After Konoha’s founding, Tobirama seeks to reshape the village’s power structure by bringing additional clans into governance and reducing Uchiha influence 194. He becomes associated with the Military Police Force, whose authority to arrest offenders in any clan territory increases Senju power but also fuels resentment toward him 213 216.

He stands as a candidate in Konoha’s First Hokage election but loses when Hyuga Yayoi unexpectedly nominates Kyosuke, leaving Tobirama convinced that the Senju have been politically outmaneuvered 221.

Second Hokage Election

After Kyosuke’s apparent death, Tobirama attempts to claim the Second Hokage position by leveraging Hashirama’s prestige and courting other clans 252. His campaign collapses after Uchiha Yuto publicly challenges and defeats him, using Mangekyo Sharingan abilities to match Tobirama’s physical power and guarantee a strike with the Kusanagi Sword 252 253.

Senju Clan Rebellion and Death

As tensions worsen under Uchiha Yuto’s rule, Tobirama plots with Hiruzen and Danzo to overthrow the Uchiha faction, intending to use Nawaki as a central asset 295. Nawaki instead attacks the Senju Clan, and Tobirama fights with Impure World Reincarnation while the clan is destroyed from within 296.

Tobirama attempts to escape with younger Senju survivors, but a cloaked Kyosuke blocks his Flying Thunder God coordinates and reveals himself as the architect of the Senju Clan’s collapse 301 302. Tobirama’s Reaper Death Seal fails against Kyosuke’s Rinnegan, after which Kyosuke kills him and the remaining Senju survivors 303.

Hashirama later revives Tobirama after the Ninja World stabilizes, allowing him the possibility of re-establishing the Senju Clan elsewhere 315.
