Awakening and Inheritance

Martial Souls are awakened through a formal ceremony, commonly conducted by Spirit Hall personnel. A person without Soul Power cannot cultivate as a Soul Master, regardless of the Martial Soul they awaken 1 108.

A Martial Soul is generally tied to parental bloodlines. Xu Hanfeng's awakening of the book-type Douluo Compendium despite his parents possessing only a sickle and hammer was considered a possible mutation 21.

• Certain Martial Souls are inherited exclusively through a bloodline, such as the Sun and Moon Martial Souls of the Sun and Moon Continent's royal families 262.
• The Nine Heart Begonia is subject to a unique lineage restriction: ordinarily, only two can exist at once; a sibling may fail to awaken a Martial Soul if another child inherits it 13.
• Innate Soul Power is not determined solely by Martial Soul quality; bloodline and other factors also affect it 104.

Classification and Forms

The conventional Beast Martial Soul/Tool Martial Soul distinction is treated as inadequate. Martial Souls may also be spirit-like, body-integrated, summoning-based, or possess other traits that do not fit either category 104.

Soul Rings and Soul Skills

Soul Rings grant Soul Skills and raise a Soul Master's Soul Power after absorption. The age and suitability of a ring can substantially affect the resulting skill and the user's growth 4.

• Xu Hanfeng's 835-year First Soul Ring raised him to Level 13 and granted Recall, allowing him to call permanent Character Cards back within range 4.
• The 5,815-year Myriad Phenomena Bookworm provided Xu Hanfeng's Second Soul Ring and expanded the Douluo Compendium with Trap Cards 26.
• Soul Rings can be used to enhance an existing Martial Soul's natural traits; Tang Ya's high-age First Ring produced Blue Silver Grass vines stronger and tougher than ordinary versions 7.
• Soul Skills may compensate for a Martial Soul's drawbacks. Tang Ya's Blue Silver Purification prevents her life-devouring Blue Silver Grass from driving her into a loss of control 7.

Ring Configuration

Soul Ring configurations are a major measure of a Martial Soul user's combat potential.

• Xu Hanfeng's summoned Character Cards mirror his own Soul Power and possess Soul Rings, enabling him to field a full team rather than fight alone 17 45.
• Wu Sido displayed a thousand-year Second Soul Ring and a ten-thousand-year Third Soul Ring, a configuration that shocked Godwind Academy 44.
• Wang Qiu'er revealed four red rings and one crimson-red ring, causing Liu Erlong's Fire Dragon Martial Soul to suffer partial suppression 102.
• Xu Hanfeng later displayed a hundred-thousand-year First Soul Ring alongside two unknown but exceptionally powerful rings 313.

Evolution and Enhancement

Martial Souls can change through compatible soul bones, accumulated energy, Immortal Herbs, or specialized card effects.

• Tang Ya absorbed the Blue Silver Emperor Right Leg Bone, gaining Wildfires Cannot Burn It All; Spring Breezes Bring It Back to Life and Blue Silver Purification. The bone brought her Blue Silver Grass approximately eighty percent of the way toward Martial Soul Evolution 7.
• Her evolution was expected to progress from Blue Silver Grass toward a Blue Silver King after further absorption of Blue Silver Grass energy 7.
• Yang Wudi's Soul Breaking Spear changed after he absorbed the Ink Jade Divine Bamboo, though it did not fully evolve 278.
• Xu Hanfeng's rare Sublimation Card can eventually grant qualified Character Cards their strongest form, including Martial Soul Evolution 185.

Martial Soul Fusion Skills

Martial Soul Fusion Skills combine compatible Martial Souls into a technique exceeding the users' ordinary strength. They are normally extremely rare, described as occurring roughly once in ten thousand cases 148.

Xu Hanfeng's soul skill allows his Character Cards to develop Fusion Skills when their compatibility exceeds sixty percent. The process can support two-person, three-person, four-person, and larger combinations 37.

Self Martial Soul Fusion

A Self Martial Soul Fusion Skill requires a Twin Martial Soul user to control both Martial Souls and keep them in perfect balance. Wu Sido achieved this only after improving her control through Heart Separation Control 59.

Douluo Compendium

Xu Hanfeng's Douluo Compendium is an exceptional book-type Summoning System Martial Soul awakened with Innate Full Soul Power 1.

Card System

The Compendium uses Soul Power to draw cards associated with the worlds of Douluo 2, Douluo 3, and Douluo 4 1.

• Character Cards — summon independent, fully loyal characters; permanent cards may act independently and can be Recalled by Xu Hanfeng 4.
• Soul Bone Cards — permanently grant Soul Bones or related benefits 4.
• Soul Skill Cards — grant Soul Skills, including Void Slash 38.
• Trap Cards — include Soul Sealing Array, which can seal an enemy Soul Ring's associated skill without directly harming the target 27.
• Soul Tool and weapon cards — can provide equipment such as the Dark Demonic Sword, Soul Tool whips, and exclusive Soul Tools for Character Cards 38 39 46.
• Scene and environment cards — can establish domains that enhance allies and weaken enemies; multiple environment cards may be stacked 59 87.

Information Detection

The Douluo Compendium can identify a person's information, including concealed statuses such as whether they are a soul beast. Xu Hanfeng used this function to identify Mu Yaoguang as a soul beast despite her human disguise 172.

Soul Spirits and the Soul Master System

Xu Hanfeng's proposed Soul Spirit system would replace conventional Soul Ring hunting with Equal Contracts between Soul Masters and soul beasts nearing death. A contracted soul beast becomes a Soul Spirit, enters the Soul Master's Sea of Consciousness, and provides Soul Rings without being killed 264 360.
