Background / History
The original Fulgrim appears as a Slaaneshi Daemon Primarch who attempts to corrupt and possess Roboute Guilliman through the fifth Crone's Sword. Zhou Yun intercepts him in the Warp, prompting Fulgrim to flee; he later continues plotting against Guilliman through corrupted Imperial officials and visions of rulership from the Golden Throne 278 292 297.
The later Fulgrim is a clone cultivated by Fabius Bile from gene-sequence dating to before the original's fall. He considers the corrupted Daemon Primarch an imperfect failure and refuses to let that version possess him, even when Slaanesh favors the clone over its fallen counterpart 568 570.
Sanguinius initially treats him as an unproven and potentially dangerous brother. Fulgrim claims that he is still learning and that Sanguinius remains his model of perfection, but his extreme pride leads Sanguinius to judge his future as uncertain 567 568.
After Zhou Yun identifies him as useful to the Imperium, Fulgrim is spared despite Guilliman's intense hatred of the face that wounded him ten thousand years earlier. He joins Imperial councils, leads forces alongside the Sons of the Phoenix, and eventually earns limited responsibility for military planning and administration 570 609 616.
Fulgrim remains deeply attached to Fabius Bile as a creator and father figure. Bile's abandonment leaves him ashamed, jealous, and desperate to prove that he is a true Primarch rather than a discarded experiment 592 675 676.
Appearance
Fulgrim is described as exceptionally beautiful and aristocratic, with an appearance that rivals Sanguinius's while carrying a more radiant, idealized quality 567.
- Snow-white long hair and violet eyes 567
- Slender, handsome face; thin lips often set in a playful or mocking smile 567 570
- Elegant purple-and-gold or Orichalcum power armor, often marked with phoenix imagery 658
- Three prominent sword scars later mar his face, disrupting the perfection he once projected 658
- Rapid healing can restore burned hair, damaged skin, and much of his physical appearance within moments 584
Personality
Fulgrim's defining drive is perfection. He regards corruption, dependence on Chaos, and visible imperfection with disgust, believing that a true Primarch must be complete, proud, and self-determined 568 585 592. His conviction is so extreme that he considers the corrupted Fulgrim unworthy of sharing his own body.
His apparent humility is often a form of insecurity. Sanguinius identifies Fulgrim's need for perfection and social reassurance as a product of Chemos's harsh environment, where small errors could destroy entire communities 612. He uses teasing, charm, and theatrical language to test whether others accept him, particularly his brothers.
Despite his arrogance, Fulgrim can show genuine empathy and attachment. He mourns the old Legion's glory, is wounded by Fabius Bile's rejection, remembers loyal Emperor's Children by name, and recognizes the suffering of the fallen Abaddon 585 655 675.
His restraint is unstable. He can resist possession and reject the gifts of the Warp, yet exposure to Fulgrim's memories, pleasure, rage, and essence steadily draws him closer to the fallen self he despises 568 659 676.
Abilities & Skills
Primarch Physiology
Fulgrim possesses the speed, strength, perception, and resilience of a Primarch clone, though other characters initially distinguish him from a complete original Primarch 578 682.
- Fights clone Horus in a direct clash of warhammers and defeats him through superior speed and aggression 682
- Survives severe bodily trauma, including having his brain pierced, and heals rapidly afterward 699
- Breaks through the defenses of gene-enhanced Tyranid organisms with Forgebreaker 702
- Is not consistently superior to all Primarch-level opponents; he struggles against Perturabo's Iron Circle and is vulnerable to Warp-based interference 659 662
Superpower Training Box Techniques
Fulgrim masters three abilities provided by Zhou Yun's Superpower Training Box 660.
- Instant Movement — relocates in a blink to evade attacks and reposition behind opponents 660
- Telekinesis — listed among his fully mastered training-box abilities 660
- X-ray Vision — listed among his fully mastered training-box abilities 660
Warp Essence and Resistance
Fulgrim's soul is linked to the greater Warp entity represented by the fallen Fulgrim. His uncorrupted pride repels possession, but absorbing more of that essence makes separation increasingly impossible 568 699 712.
- Rejects the corrupted Fulgrim's attempt to enter and share his body 568
- Denounces Chaos Gods as degrading projections of base desire rather than sources of perfection 592
- Gains strength and increasingly rapid recovery as he merges with Fulgrim's essence 698 699
- Becomes susceptible to pleasure, hallucinations, and intrusive impulses connected to the Warp and his counterpart 659 676 712
- Ultimately kills and absorbs the fallen Fulgrim during their confrontation, leaving his own identity fragmented 714
Strategy, Administration, and Diplomacy
Fulgrim combines tactical creativity with an exacting intolerance for waste and poor information 616 662.
- Improves Guilliman's proposed encirclement of the Storm Lord's forces with additional unit deployments 616
- Identifies inaccurate tithe assessments that could trigger rebellions, collapse star systems, or cause needless deaths 616
- Leads Astartes and allied forces through Dragonwood Star while assessing enemy psychology and Warp hazards 662
- Is described as a natural diplomat and an insightful reader of psychological manipulation 662
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Forgebreaker — warhammer forged by Fulgrim and later modified by Ferrus Manus and Perturabo; Fulgrim uses it as his principal weapon in battles against Abaddon, clone Horus, Tyranids, and the fallen Fulgrim 580 585 682 711
- Flame Sword — weapon used during the final conflict with Saul and Arcanes after Fulgrim's fusion with his fallen counterpart 714
- Purple-and-gold Power Armor — ornate armor associated with the Phoenix and the Sons of the Emperor 658
- Anywhere Door access — uses Zhou Yun's transport device to travel between his flagship and Guilliman's office 611 616
Relationships
- Fabius Bile — creator and father figure; Fulgrim craves Bile's approval despite feeling abandoned and betrayed by him 592 675 676.
- Sanguinius — brother, examiner, and reluctant source of guidance; Sanguinius refuses full acceptance until Fulgrim proves he will not repeat his fall 567 568.
- Roboute Guilliman — distrusting brother and eventual administrative partner; Guilliman initially wants him killed but later entrusts him with strategic and tithe-related work 570 612 616.
- Zhou Yun / Saint Doraemon — patron and wary ally; Zhou Yun considers Fulgrim useful, provides the Superpower Training Box, and seeks to preserve Fulgrim's noble essence 570 660 677.
- Ferrus Manus — beloved brother whose death and memory remain Fulgrim's greatest emotional vulnerability; he reacts violently to replicas that use Ferrus's voice or likeness 664 711 715.
- Saul — Primaris Scion and Chapter Master of the Sons of the Phoenix; Fulgrim recognizes him as his son, but Saul ultimately rejects him and dies resisting him 609 676 714.
- Arcanes — former Phoenix Guard leader and subordinate; serves Fulgrim but ultimately defies him in defense of the Phoenix Guard's honor 611 714.
- Arkhadun — former Emperor's Children captain and exceptional swordsman; fights beside Fulgrim during the Dragonwood Star campaign 658 659.
- Marius — loyal captain who continues defending Fulgrim even when defiance of the Lord of Thirst causes him to decay 714 715.
- Abaddon — enemy and victim of Fulgrim's curiosity; Fulgrim tortures him while condemning his dependence on the Chaos Gods, yet later calls him “nephew” and offers to avenge him 585 660.

Service to the Imperium
Though Guilliman and Leman Russ consider him dangerous, Fulgrim is retained because Zhou Yun believes he remains useful. He joins Imperial war councils, proves capable of refining military plans, and undertakes the impossible task of reviewing flawed sector tithe records 570 612 616.

Trivia
- Fulgrim personally paints large works depicting his brothers, Ferrus Manus, and major moments of Imperial history; his office resembles an artist's studio more than a command center 616.
- He is unusually approachable to mortals compared with many Primarchs, and Sanguinius recalls that children once laughed in his presence 568.
- Fulgrim regards excessive decoration without aesthetic discipline as repulsive, openly disliking Arkhadun's ostentatious armor 658.
- His three facial scars become a visible symbol of the imperfection he can no longer ignore 658.
