Appearance
The Emperor is perceived differently by different observers. On Chemos, Kasgar saw him as a towering giant in gleaming golden armor, taller and more imposing than the Primarchs, though his face remained obscured by a haze 19. Ten thousand years later, his psychic radiance cycles through forms shaped by the hopes and perceptions of those who behold him; his physical body on the Golden Throne appears skeletal and bound to machinery 272.
- Golden armor and a golden sword accompany him in battle 173.
- He is often surrounded by dazzling golden light and golden psychic flame 173.
- His presence evokes an immediate urge to worship among ordinary humans 19.
- He can disguise himself as an Emperor's Children Astartes through psychic power 184.
Personality
The Emperor is distant, authoritative, and relentlessly focused on humanity's long-term survival. He can be stern toward his Primarchs, dismissing Horus and Philus's rivalry for the Warmastership as a betrayal of their familial bonds 176. He also accepts severe sacrifices in pursuit of his goals, including the fate of the Thunder Warriors and the destruction of Prospero 83 185.
Despite this severity, he repeatedly attempts to guide his wayward sons before resorting to force. He tried to correct Magnus through restraint and explanation, only responding violently after Magnus destroyed the Webway with forbidden sorcery 185. He continues to pursue the Great Crusade's purpose even while acknowledging its ultimate failure as a broader historical trend 121.
Background & History
Unification of Terra
After Terra's reunification, the Emperor faced a revolt by the Thunder Warriors under his former companion Ushatn. The rebellion attacked the Imperial Palace, but Ushatn was beheaded by the Emperor's guards 83.
During the same period, a fire destroyed the Emperor's underground laboratory and its records on Space Marine development. Melusine, Lady Astartes's female Space Marine prototype, survived the disaster and was taken in by the Emperor 83.
The Great Crusade
The Emperor personally recovered Fulgrim on Chemos, praising her transformation of the mining world and welcoming her as his child 19. He later recognized Fulgrim's Third Legion by granting it the honorific Sons of the Emperor and promising it a Gloriana-class flagship 24.
At an early Primarch banquet, he appointed the Lord of the Second Legion as Warmaster, while retaining ultimate control of the Great Crusade through the Terra War Council 62. Much later, following two centuries of expansion and the Ullanor victory, he declared his withdrawal from the Crusade's front lines and named Fulgrim the new Warmaster. He chose her for her cooperation with the other Legions rather than personal ambition 176.
The Emperor also permitted the Third Legion's use of Ling Clan mercenaries and Webway technology after personally overruling objections within the Terra War Council, judging that their service accelerated the Crusade 176.
Magnus and the Webway
The Emperor already knew of the Webway and was attempting to repair it beneath Terra when Magnus attempted to assist. Magnus's uncontrolled psychic outburst instead breached the Webway and triggered a daemonic invasion 182.
After Magnus defied the Edict of Nikaea by conducting a mass sacrificial ritual, the Emperor confronted him directly in the Warp, subdued him, and brought him to Terra 185. He ordered the Burning of Prospero, disbanded the Thousand Sons, and had Magnus imprisoned under Custodes and Sisters of Silence guard 185.
The Emperor revealed to Magnus that he had once intended for him to sit upon the Golden Throne and guide humanity with his psychic power 185.
The Golden Throne
As his power grew increasingly unstable, the Emperor's body began to crack and break apart, forcing him to devote more psychic strength to containing himself. By the end of the Great Crusade, he could no longer safely fight on the front lines without risking a catastrophic breach in reality 212.
Following the Webway's later breach, he remained bound to the Golden Throne because he could not leave it to aid the defenders directly 195. Ten thousand years later, he tells Kasgar that he may yet stand again if his lost human fragments—one held by each of the four Chaos Gods—can be recovered and the Webway restored 272.
