Background / History
Konoha was founded openly on a vast plain by Hashirama Senju and Madara Uchiha. Its location connected in all directions, an advantage for access and development but a vulnerability in war; its large-scale Perception Barrier could detect intruders but could not stop an invasion. 144
Following the First Shinobi World War and Tobirama Senju's death, Hiruzen Sarutobi stabilized the village during a period of internal and external pressure. His administration later became Konoha's peak era, producing figures such as Jiraiya, Tsunade, and Orochimaru. 512 In his later years, however, authority was divided among Hiruzen, Danzō, Mitokado Homura, and Utatane Koharu, while conflicts between the leadership and ninja clans intensified. 305 407
The Uchiha Clan's destruction remained one of Konoha's defining internal wounds. Its conflict with the village was tied to the Nine-Tails' Rampage and Minato Namikaze's death, while Itachi Uchiha's role in the clan's annihilation became central to Sasuke's understanding of Konoha's past. 514
Geography & Infrastructure
- Konoha encompasses its surrounding training grounds; Training Ground 44 is considered part of the village in the broad sense. 81
- The village was built on open terrain rather than behind natural barriers, unlike Takigakure. 144
- Its Perception Barrier provides warning of enemy entry but is not a true defensive wall. 144
- The Hokage Building served as the center of government and the venue for major leadership meetings. 287 517
- Hokage Rock and the Hokage Building were designated for removal during integration into the Village of Light. 581

|---|---|
| Sarutobi Hiruzen | Third Hokage; oversaw the Chunin Exams before dying during Orochimaru's invasion. 72 126 |
| Jiraiya | Became the de facto leader after Hiruzen's death; declined the Hokage position and sought Tsunade instead. 126 128 |

| Hashirama Senju and Tobirama Senju | Reanimated through Impure World Reincarnation during Konoha's final crisis; their return restored morale and shaped preparations against the Village of Light. 509 517 |
Political Factions
- Hokage and clan leadership — Tsunade relied heavily on Shikaku Nara's strategic counsel and the support of major clans, particularly the Ino-Shika-Cho alliance. 424 426
- Elder Advisors — Mitokado Homura and Utatane Koharu retained influence under Tsunade but lost much of the control they had held during Hiruzen's tenure. 287 426
- Root — Danzō used Root to act independently, including aiding Orochimaru's Konoha Crush Plan with intelligence and cover-up efforts. 127
- Ninja clans — The Hyuga, Nara, Akimichi, Yamanaka, Aburame, Inuzuka, Kurama, and other clans formed a major part of Konoha's military foundation. 517 537
Military Strength
Konoha was historically among the shinobi world's strongest and wealthiest villages, occupying a central position and concentrating considerable resources. 256 At its peak, it reportedly approached 20,000 active ninja. 282
Its military reputation rested on both large numbers and a deep pool of talented shinobi. Konoha was described as having unrivaled talent reserves, though its leadership often failed to use those resources effectively. 341
Story Role / Major Arcs
Chunin Exams and Konoha Crush Plan
Konoha hosted the Chunin Exams as a display of military strength and a means of securing mission contracts. The event drew the Land of Fire's daimyo, the Kazekage of Sunagakure, and foreign dignitaries. 72
Orochimaru and Sunagakure used the exams as cover for the Konoha Crush Plan. Sound and Sand forces invaded, Gaara began transforming into Shukaku, and Konoha's ninja divided to defend the village. 117 Hiruzen died in the battle, while Menma defected with Orochimaru. 126
Tsunade's Succession and the Menma Crisis
After Hiruzen's death, Konoha faced a leadership struggle between Jiraiya, Danzō, the advisors, and clan representatives. Jiraiya refused the position and brought Tsunade back to become Fifth Hokage. 127 128 152
Tsunade changed Menma's wanted order from “kill” to “capture,” seeking to avoid turning him into an irrevocable enemy of Konoha. 152 As Menma's influence grew, Konoha considered an alliance with Kumogakure and the use of the Six-Tails and Seven-Tails as leverage to reclaim the Nine-Tails. 288
Conflicts with the Village of Light
Konoha joined the pressure against Takigakure and Kusagakure, dispatching nearly four thousand ninja under Jiraiya, Shikaku, Inoichi, Kakashi, and Asuma toward the Land of Waterfalls. 301 Menma's forces repelled Konoha's army, while Konoha withdrew without suffering the same losses as Kumogakure and Kirigakure. 342
Konoha later sent an envoy led by Shikaku to the Village of Light's founding ceremony and formally recognized Menma as the Heavenly Kage. 379 Danzō nevertheless used Root to conduct covert operations during the diplomatic visit, provoking a renewed internal dispute upon the delegation's return. 395 399
Fourth Shinobi World War
When Kirigakure demanded passage through the Land of Fire to attack the Village of Light, Konoha's leadership split over whether to comply. Tsunade ultimately strengthened border defenses and sent support to the Village of Light rather than cooperate directly with Kirigakure. 424 426
Konoha later led the Ninja Allied Forces against the Village of Light, contributing more than 10,000 ninja to the coalition. 480 In preparation for Menma's anticipated attack, Tsunade used Impure World Reincarnation to summon Hashirama, Tobirama, Hiruzen, Minato, Jiraiya, Kushina, and Kagami Uchiha. 508 509
Hashirama's return briefly restored confidence throughout the village, and Konoha's clans mobilized extensively for the final conflict. 517 537 After Hashirama's defeat, Konoha surrendered unconditionally to the Village of Light. 578
Integration into the Village of Light
- Captured Konoha ninja had most restrictions lifted, as Menma chose to rely on the cooperation of Konoha's leaders and his own strength. 581
- Hashirama, Tobirama, Shikaku, Inoichi, and Shibi cooperated with the integration process. 581
- Konoha's main structure was to remain in place, but its former symbols—including the Hokage Building and Hokage Rock—were to be removed. 581
- Under Menma's plan, Konoha would become one of six regional Village of Light branches, with ninja clans subject to relocation while ordinary civilians remained in place. 581
