Background / History
Loki is the biological son of Laufey, king of the Frost Giants, but was taken in and raised by Odin as an Asgardian prince. He resents his Frost Giant heritage, considers Jotunheim barbaric, and long defines himself through his perceived inferiority to Thor and his need to be recognized as worthy of Asgard’s throne. 67 71 197
After Odin is forced into slumber and Thor is banished, Loki temporarily takes control of Asgard without possessing the loyalty of its warriors. His lack of authority, combined with humiliation at Ben’s hands on Earth, drives him to seek Laufey’s help in killing Odin and to deploy the Destroyer against Midgard. 68 71
His assault fails. Ben acquires Loki’s Frost Giant genes after defeating him, later takes the Casket of Ancient Winters, and helps cause Loki’s banishment to Sakaar through the Bifrost. Loki is captured by Valkyrie, sold into Sakaar’s gladiatorial system, and seemingly killed in the arena by Great Devil Corker. 68 76 78 81 90
Appearance
Loki commonly presents himself as an elegant Asgardian prince, favoring ornate armor, royal robes, and horned crowns. His appearance changes noticeably when Frost Giant power or the Casket of Ancient Winters affects him. 71 76 216
- Dark green robes with gold patterns during his attempted coronation. 216
- Curved golden horned crown associated with his royal persona. 216
- Silver armor and a red cloak while wielding Mjolnir as Thor Loki. 198 216
- Blue-green Frost Giant skin when channeling the Casket of Ancient Winters. 76 300
- Green magical energy and conjured daggers in combat. 495
Personality
Early in the story, Loki is arrogant, status-conscious, and deeply insecure. He looks down on Midgardians, dismisses Frost Giants as beasts, and reacts violently whenever his heritage or worthiness is challenged. His jealousy of Thor stems less from simple hatred than from a lifelong belief that Asgard sees him only as Thor’s lesser counterpart. 67 71 76 197
Repeated defeats, slavery on Sakaar, and Thor’s willingness to die for him force Loki to confront his own cowardice and self-deception. He chooses to stand against Ebony Maw despite believing he will lose, motivated by loyalty to Sakaar and a desire not to betray Ben’s faith in him again. 195 197
Loki remains theatrical and mischievous even after his growth. He treats deception as an art, enjoys writing elaborate “scripts” for Thor’s life, and refuses Asgard’s crown by replacing himself with an illusion during his own coronation. 216 292
Abilities & Skills
Illusion Magic
Loki specializes in creating convincing illusions, decoys, disguises, and misdirection.
- Creates false bodies and uses them to evade attacks or conceal his real position. 68 322 495
- Saves Thor and the Galactic Plumbers from Hela by making their apparent bodies disperse while they escape through Asgard’s hidden routes. 322
- Uses a final illusion to deceive Maltruant in the race for the multiversal throne. 582
- Void Illusion can nullify his magic and expose his true position. 495

- The Casket of Ancient Winters turns his skin blue and unleashes freezing winds over a wide area. 76
- His Frost Giant heritage allows him to present himself credibly to Malekith as Laufey’s son. 300 301
- His divine power does not fully match the Casket’s potential, as his power is tied to Yggdrasil and leans toward a fire-god lineage. 195
Thor Loki
After Thor shields him from Ebony Maw’s attack, Loki becomes worthy of Mjolnir and gains the powers associated with Thor.
- Summons lightning and storms while wearing Thor’s armor. 198
- Uses Mjolnir to pin Hulk to the ground. 201
- Opens a spatial passage large enough for a giant battleship with the Cosmic Cube after his transformation. 204
- Later relinquishes the hammer, choosing not to define himself through it or the Asgardian throne. 216 271
