Background / History
Early Gotham Police Department service
Recently transferred to the Gotham PD, Gordon begins working with Detective Harvey on the Scott Asylum massacre. Unlike most officers, he refuses Harvey's advice to abandon the case because it involves the Maroni Family; he continues investigating even after forensic evidence reveals that every bullet from the victims' remains has vanished. He enlists evidence-department consultant Edward Nygma for assistance. 5 6
Gordon's commitment to procedure repeatedly puts him at odds with Gotham's criminal influence. He confronts Sal Maroni without a warrant or evidence, investigates the Wayne shooting under orders from the Police Commissioner, and questions the official conclusion that Mario Pepper was the killer after Pepper dies while resisting arrest. 6 16 17
Arkham Asylum investigations
Gordon becomes increasingly suspicious of Warden Li Wei and Arkham Asylum after encountering the Gotham Beast, Katarina Jhin, and Warwick Vander—who closely resembles Viper Potion culprit Stan Topolsky. His intuition consistently points toward Arkham, but he cannot produce evidence sufficient for an arrest or warrant. 30 31 37
After Fish Mooney's death, Gordon traces the kidnapping of Arkham-bound prisoner Ian Hargrove back to the asylum. Ian's implausibly convenient explanation—that he escaped his kidnappers and voluntarily walked to Arkham for treatment—strengthens Gordon's conviction that Li Wei is concealing something, but leaves him legally powerless. 37
During the Maroni–Falcone war, Gordon and Harvey witness the Gotham Beast, Ian, and Dr. Hugo massacre Maroni forces. The trio spares the detectives, leading Gordon to question whether Arkham is an enemy, an ally, or something beyond either category. 41 42 46
Dismissal and return
Gordon is framed for the death of a civilian struck by a bullet allegedly fired from his service weapon and is dismissed from the Gotham PD. Rather than accept defeat, he requests a position as a security guard at Arkham Asylum, intending to investigate it from within. 47
Li Wei gives Gordon an unusually relaxed patrol assignment and ensures that Arkham's secrets remain hidden. Gordon finds no proof against the asylum, but Li Wei later provides a clue to the mass-hanging and organ-theft case. Gordon solves the case with Harvey and returns to the Gotham PD. 48 55 56
Rebuilding the police
Gordon attempts to improve the department from within, including creating an integrity fund and using evidence supplied by Cobblepot to arrest corrupt officer Sheriff Flass. His pragmatic cooperation with Cobblepot reflects his growing willingness to use Gotham's criminal power structures without abandoning his commitment to the law. 61 72 75
When Jerome's group destroys the Gotham Police Department and kills its senior officers, Gordon assumes command of the surviving personnel. He vows to rebuild despite their low morale and later works with Director Barnes and retired Marines to establish a tougher reformed GPD. 97 110
Gordon remains determined to connect Li Wei to Gotham's catastrophes, including Jerome's charity-gala bombing, but Director Barnes reiterates the obstacle that has defined Gordon's investigations: Arkham cannot be pursued without evidence. 143 246
Personality
Gordon is driven by procedural justice: he believes criminals must be judged under the law, even when they are dangerous, influential, or despised. He refuses to abandon victims during the Viper Potion crisis and objects to vigilante punishment of corrupt officers and criminals. 24 65
His integrity does not make him naïve. Gotham's corruption forces him to accept compromises, including working with Cobblepot for evidence against criminal gangs and corrupt police officers. He sees this as a necessary means of preserving justice rather than surrendering to Gotham's rules. 48 72 101
Gordon is persistent to the point of exhaustion. He continues pursuing Arkham-related cases despite repeated failures, public panic, political interference, and the destruction of his department. His inability to prove Li Wei's crimes causes recurring self-doubt, but never ends his investigation. 37 65 83 143
Abilities & Skills
Investigative Intuition
Gordon has an unusually accurate instinct for identifying suspicious people and connections. Harvey notes that Gordon's intuition has almost never been wrong, including his recognition that Warwick Vander resembled Stan Topolsky. 30 31
- Connects the Gotham Beast, Katarina Jhin, Scarecrow, and Arkham Asylum through recurring patterns. 37 65
- Deduces that Jerome's unseen explosives detonate upon contact after witnessing their effects on ARGUS personnel. 141 142
- Refuses to treat intuition as proof; he will not make an arrest without evidence and legal grounds. 30 57
Detective Work
Gordon is regarded within the Gotham PD as the officer who can solve cases others cannot. His investigations include the Scott Asylum massacre, the Wayne shooting, Fish Mooney's death, Professor Gidro's Fear Gland murders, and the mass-hanging case. 6 17 37 56
- Works closely with forensic consultant Edward Nygma and partner Harvey Bullock. 6 17
- Pursues leads even when senior officers order him to prioritize more politically convenient cases. 16 71
- Uses physical evidence and witness testimony rather than coercion or unsupported accusations. 30 37
Combat and Command
