Background

Father Zhol recognized his intelligence, creativity, and dedication to learning, eventually recommending him to Meteor City's Elder Council. Chrollo also brought flowers to the church as offerings. 8 24 25 27

Before formally joining Mog's group, Chrollo survived Meteor City's turf conflicts through planning rather than force. When Phinks and Feitan robbed him, he gave them a prepared decoy while keeping the real item—a videotape of the popular animation Cleaning Squad—hidden on his person. 9

He chose to dub Cleaning Squad into Meteor City's common tongue so local children could understand it. With Pakunoda, Shira, and Sarasa, he turned the screening into a communal event that drew children from across the city. 22 24

Appearance

At ten, Chrollo was slightly taller than Machi and Feitan, with a boyish face and an unusual magnetism that drew other children toward him. By thirteen, his demeanor had grown markedly steadier and more mature. 24 122

  • Pale, sickly complexion in his early teens. 122
  • Two simple blue charms worn on his earlobes. 122
  • Bandages around his forehead; later described with an inverted cross on his forehead. 122 215
  • Frequently carries and reads books, including an ancient book. 122 190

Personality

Chrollo is composed, observant, and highly pragmatic. As a child, he assessed threats quickly, prepared decoys against robbery, and manipulated Phinks's anger to redirect him toward Uvogin while escaping with Shalnark. 9

He is notably self-aware for his age. Upon learning of Nen, he accepted that he was not physically ready, acknowledged Mog's greater trust in longer-standing companions, and chose to earn that trust rather than demand immediate training. 34 51

His ambitions center on Meteor City's survival and development. He studies outside information, seeks systems that can protect the city, and later treats Mafia influence, industry, and external connections as tools to improve Meteor City's position. 49 218 222

Chrollo is also willing to use ruthless methods when he considers them strategically valuable. He intends to poison Beni's Blade for rapid immobilization and shows interest in exploiting dangerous items and powerful Nen abilities. 192 193 201

Abilities & Skills

Chrollo awakened as a Specialization-type Nen user after studying the Shingen-ryu manual provided by Mog. 122

  • Must ask the target questions about their ability and receive an answer. 214
  • The target must place their hand on the handprint on the book's cover. 214
  • The first three conditions must be completed within one hour. 214
  • A stolen ability normally disappears from the book when its original user dies, though exceptionally strong post-mortem Nen may leave a small possibility of preservation. 214

Teleportation

Chrollo possesses a stolen Teleportation ability by the Ambrosia conflict. 215

  • Teleported the Phantom Troupe directly into Salvatore Maras's hidden office. 215

  • Developed an early understanding of the internet, firewalls, backdoors, and online surveillance from discarded media and outside news. 49

  • Coordinated reconnaissance of Lisnos with Shalnark through Mog's Spy Device. 130
  • Prioritizes swift, tightly coordinated operations that leave targets little opportunity to react. 138
  • Assessed surviving Mafia personnel and assigned them to roles suited to their abilities rather than wasting them as combatants. 223

Performance, Writing & Direction

Chrollo is an accomplished voice actor, scriptwriter, director, and crowd handler.

  • Dubbed numerous male roles in Cleaning Squad and held a crowd's attention when the projector failed. 26
  • Wrote dialogue and performed the villain role during the live voice-over. 29

  • Phinks and Feitan — Early antagonists who repeatedly attempted to rob Chrollo; both eventually join his circle and later accept Mog's order to obey Chrollo when Mog is absent. 9 23 125

Story Role / Major Arcs

Meteor City Screenings and Film Project

Chrollo organizes the Cleaning Squad screening, writes its local-language dialogue, and voices much of its cast. When the projector breaks, he takes the stage and keeps the children engaged until the tape is repaired. The event earns admiration from Uvogin, Phinks, Feitan, Machi, and Nobunaga, helping form the group that becomes the Phantom Troupe. 22 26 30

After joining Mog, Chrollo helps produce Hyakuju Sentai. He acts as the central hero, Lion Red, writes plot details, designs uniforms, and uses the film to give Meteor City's children a vision of unity and resistance. 32 37 40 42

Children's Future Investigation

After discovering that outsiders had abused and filmed children from Meteor City, Chrollo concludes that the perpetrators had committed such crimes repeatedly. His resolve to protect his companions and punish the offenders hardens. 47

He presents Elder Babagra with a plan to exploit the growth of the internet, create a controlled backdoor, and lure criminals into exposing themselves. His understanding of the emerging technology earns the elder's respect. 49

Chrollo later provides information on the Children's Future Foundation and Lisnos, then monitors Lisnos with Shalnark. He identifies the operation as more than revenge: exposing Lisnos would establish Meteor City's reputation before the world. 126 130 131

Phantom Troupe Formation

While Mog is away, Chrollo remains in Meteor City to study, organize its systems, and build its ties with external groups. He gradually earns the trust of Meteor City's residents and elders. 53 69

After becoming a Nen user, he joins the official formation of the Phantom Troupe. Under the playing-card system, Mog serves as King while Chrollo becomes Queen and the sole commander in Mog's absence. 122 125

Ambrosia and Mafia Development

Following the Troupe's public debut, Chrollo stays in Ambrosia to study the Mafia's operating model and secure direct Mafia support for Meteor City. 218

With Mog's assistance, he establishes factories and distribution channels for computer components using the former Ten Dons' trade infrastructure. He intends to use legitimate industry and personnel management to strengthen Meteor City, Ambrosia, and his influence over the Mafia. 222 223

Kud Bandit Conflict

Chrollo joins Mog in tracking down Kud, leader of the S-class Kude Bandit organization. He recognizes Kud's mechanical eye and explains the legend of its gear-like sound, known as “The Sound of Turning Fate.” 207

When Kud's former aura is wielded by Suneo under the Stone of Seven Emotions and Six Desires, Chrollo judges the power to be an empty façade lacking its original user's spirit. He requests the chance to fight it as practical combat training. 211
