Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Asauchi | 152 197 | A semi-finished blade forged by Nimaiya Ōetsu. Its wielder cultivates a spirit within it through Blade Zen. |
| Zanpakuto | 198 | Formed once the nurtured spirit matures enough to communicate its name to its wielder. |
| Shikai | 130 487 | First Release. Calling the Zanpakuto's true name fuses part of its spiritual power with the Shinigami, typically increasing Reiatsu three- to fivefold and granting its abilities. |
| Bankai | 130 487 | Final Release. The Zanpakuto fully fuses with its wielder, typically increasing Reiatsu five- to tenfold and enabling fuller use of its abilities. Achieving Bankai is the basic requirement for a Gotei 13 Captain. |
Background / History
The earliest Zanpakuto were reportedly forged by Nimaiya Ōetsu from the souls of powerful Shinigami, producing blades with exceptionally potent traits. Ōetsu later shifted to forging Asauchi, allowing individual Shinigami to cultivate their own Zanpakuto spirits through Blade Zen instead. 196 197
Central 46 forbade two identical Zanpakuto from existing in the same era. The decree protects the accepted belief that a Zanpakuto is born from, and dies with, its wielder's soul. 197
Appearance
Zanpakuto have no universal appearance. Before maturation, they exist as Asauchi; after Release, their forms and abilities can change dramatically. 4 152
- A released Zanpakuto may take forms other than a sword, such as a lightning-projecting spear. 4
- The wielder's soul and deepest desires influence a Zanpakuto's eventual nature and abilities. 164
- Some ancient “strongest” Zanpakuto can select compatible wielders rather than being exclusively born from one owner's soul. 254
Abilities & Mechanics
Soul Cultivation
A Shinigami nurtures an Asauchi's spirit through Blade Zen. Once the spirit reveals its name, the Shinigami can invoke that name to draw upon its power. 152 198
- Zanpakuto power is described as accounting for roughly seventy percent of a Shinigami's strength. 130 198
- A Zanpakuto's abilities reflect aspects of its wielder's soul, desires, and disposition. 164
- Failure to develop the bond between wielder and spirit can severely limit the weapon's use. 11
Shikai
Shikai is the first stage of Zanpakuto Release, granting a major Reiatsu increase and access to the weapon's defining ability. 130 487
- Reiatsu generally increases by three to five times. 13 130
- The released form commonly differs from the sealed weapon. 4
- A highly compatible Captain can release Shikai without speaking the Zanpakuto's name. 11
Bankai
Bankai is the final Release and the strongest conventional state of a Zanpakuto. 23 130
- It generally raises the user's Reiatsu five- to tenfold. 23 487
- Standard training requires materializing the Zanpakuto spirit and making it submit. 10 66
- Urahara Kisuke's Tenshintai can forcibly materialize a spirit, but a wielder who fails its three-day training limit may lose the ability to use Shikai. 10 11
- Bankai is not an automatic measure of complete combat mastery; a wielder's Zanjutsu, Shunpo, Hakuda, and Kidō remain decisive. 66 487
Materialization
A Zanpakuto spirit can be brought into physical form under exceptional circumstances, including Bankai training or outside interference. 10 81
- A materialized spirit judges whether its wielder is worthy of its power. 81
- Muramasa can communicate with Zanpakuto spirits, provoke their dissatisfaction, and force them to materialize or rebel against their wielders. 22 39
- Ailin can use Muramasa's ability to materialize the Zanpakuto stored within Unlimited Blade Works without needing to distort their wills. 280

Special Cases and Threats
| Case | Effect |
|---|---|
| Unlimited Blade Works | Can forge any Zanpakuto Ailin understands, reproducing its abilities and its owner's accumulated combat experience. Each forged Zanpakuto also increases Ailin's Reiatsu. 1 |
| Unlimited Blade Works projections | Weapons projected outside Ailin's Inner World are one rank weaker than their originals stored within it. 4 |
| Moyao Blade | Can absorb Shinigami Reiatsu, control victims, and seal a Zanpakuto's Release while active. 6 355 359 |
| Quincy Bankai theft | Quincy such as Driske Berche can steal Bankai, severely weakening Shinigami reliant on their final Release. 486 487 |
| Sword-Person fusion | Umehari fused his Zanpakuto with his body, becoming a living Zanpakuto with greatly enhanced durability and strength. 177 |
| Identical Zanpakuto | Their existence is forbidden in Soul Society; exposure can place both the copied weapon's wielder and its original owner in danger. 1 197 |
