Background
Krypton and the Phantom Zone
Krypton’s history is disputed by the Skrulls and Kree. Both accounts agree that Krypton became an interstellar power, fought in the wider Kree–Skrull conflict, suffered a major defeat at the Barrington System, and sealed the Rao system behind the Phantom Zone roughly nine to ten thousand years ago. 359 381
According to General Talos, Krypton was a rigid pyramid society that used the Codex to manufacture genetically designed citizens for predetermined social roles. Talos claims that Kryptonian expansion enslaved or destroyed other worlds, eventually provoking other civilizations to exploit the species’ weakness to green sunlight. 359 360
Yon-Rogg presents a different account: Krypton emerged within Skrull-controlled territory, resisted Skrull infiltration through its DNA-based technology, and fought back after the Skrulls attempted to annihilate it. He claims the Kree sought Krypton as an ally and possessed intelligence gathered by secret envoys during Krypton’s active era. 381
Codex-Born and “Flawed” Kryptonians
Talos states that ordinary Kryptonians reproduce through the Codex: prospective parents provide DNA, and a genetically selected infant is produced for a designated occupation. 360
Naturally conceived children are called Flawed because they bypass the Codex’s genetic screening and role assignment. Talos claims such children are exiled in space pods, intended to be cast into the Phantom Zone. 360
Henry Brown is identified by Talos as a possible “exiled Flawed,” though Henry himself has no verified knowledge of his birth or departure from Krypton. 360 366
Physiology and Abilities
The documented abilities below are primarily observed through Henry Brown. Whether every Kryptonian possesses them at the same level is not established. 359 365
Solar Energy Absorption
Kryptonians grow stronger under a Yellow Sun and can store absorbed solar energy. 8 18
- Yellow sunlight enhances Henry’s physical abilities and allows him to function without ordinary rest for extended periods. 8 697
- Stored energy can be expended through his bio-field and heat-based attacks. 18
- A Kryptonian’s effectiveness depends heavily on environmental stellar radiation; Henry considers Earth’s Yellow Sun a crucial “home-field advantage.” 381
Superhuman Strength and Durability
Henry displays physical power and resilience far beyond human limits.
- Bullets tear his clothing but fail to injure his body. 352
- He can tear apart Vibranium ore with his bare hands. 420
- He can withstand direct combat with Gilgamesh, though Gilgamesh’s full-strength strikes can send him flying and injure his jaw. 751
- His body heals from severe self-inflicted injuries, but not at the near-instantaneous rate associated with Wolverine or Deadpool. 18
Super Speed and Flight
Kryptonians can move at extreme speed and fly without external equipment.
- Henry uses super speed to evade surveillance, retrieve people from danger, infiltrate ships, and cross large distances. 359 375 567
- He can fly, hover, and rapidly change direction in midair. 240 749 751
- Ordinary vehicles are primarily a cover identity for Henry rather than a necessity for travel. 463
Heat Vision and Bio-Field
Henry’s bio-field converts stored energy into focused effects, including flame generation and heat vision. 18
- He can ignite a lighter-sized flame from his fingertip. 18
- His Heat Vision combines kinetic force with extreme heat, allowing it to cut D’Bari combatants apart. 167
- Heat Vision is obstructed by Henry’s full-face Night Suit unless he damages its hood. 372
- Energy conversion produces waste, making inefficient bio-field applications costly. 18
Enhanced Senses
Henry possesses unusually acute sensory and analytical capabilities.
- X-ray vision can observe structures and lifeforms through barriers, including the interior of a Kree cruiser. 374
- His vision can perceive energy emissions and identify abnormalities such as the device on Carol Danvers’ neck. 350
- He uses hearing to gather intelligence from a distance and can identify some medical conditions through combined sensory input. 59 567
- His sensory abilities have limits; many diseases remain undetectable, particularly viral infections. 59
- Following a mental conflict and contradictory memories, Henry’s eye-based abilities—including molecular-scale observation, X-ray vision, and heat vision—became severely impaired. 550 720
Super-Brain and Biological Control
Kryptonian cognition and bodily control allow Henry to perform highly precise physical adjustments.
- He can control individual muscles with enough precision to alter his facial features and imitate expressions. 10
- His reaction speed and calculation ability make precision sports feats routine, though he avoids public displays to preserve his cover. 10
- He can consciously force abnormal internal processes, such as reverse stomach peristalsis, though doing so can injure his own reinforced body. 101
- His super-brain can rapidly organize conflicting memories, but it also worsened the strain caused by the Master Illusion’s mental attack. 550 804
Weaknesses
Stellar Radiation
Green sunlight is the only publicly known Kryptonian weakness in this universe. It can weaken Kryptonians to the point that they are nearly helpless. 359 365 411
- Red sunlight can strip a Kryptonian of their powers and render them physically ordinary. 411
- Henry concludes that the underlying vulnerability is stellar radiation rather than a mineral alone. 365
- Henry fears that S.H.I.E.L.D. or Earth’s leading scientists could eventually develop artificial sun lamps or anti-Kryptonian technology. 365 411
Kryptonite
Natural Kryptonite was believed absent from Earth because Krypton did not explode in this universe. 365
John Garrett later presented glowing green stones as “Kryptonite,” but Henry identified their dangerous alpha radiation and suggested that at least the brightest sample was likely uranium or similarly radioactive material. The stones did not demonstrate a confirmed Kryptonian-specific effect. 593 594
Biological Limits
Kryptonians are highly resistant but not invulnerable.
- Henry can still feel pain despite his Iron Body. 554
- His regeneration is limited compared with dedicated healing-factor mutants. 18
- Yellow-Sun Kryptonians are not necessarily immune to viruses or all conventional illnesses. 59
- Henry’s powers can be disrupted or diminished by mental attacks and altered states of consciousness. 550 789 804
Society and Technology
DNA Locks
Kryptonian biology prevents Skrulls from fully replicating a Kryptonian’s DNA or accessing memories through their usual shapeshifting process. 342 359
This resistance made Krypton unusually difficult for the Skrull Empire to infiltrate and is cited by Yon-Rogg as a major reason the Skrulls treated Krypton as an existential threat. 381
Codex System
The Kryptonian Codex is described as a reproductive and social-engineering system that determines a citizen’s genetic quality and future role before birth. 360
- Codex-born Kryptonians are assigned functions such as engineer, soldier, or artist. 360
- The system is alleged to preserve occupational and familial specialization across generations. 366
- Naturally born children bypass this system and are classified as Flawed. 360
Phantom Zone
The Phantom Zone is a cosmic barrier surrounding the Rao system. 359 381
- Talos describes it as a trap originally created by Kryptonians, imprisoning those inside while excluding outsiders. 359
- Yon-Rogg describes it as Krypton’s defensive response after the destruction of its fleet at the Barrington System. 381
- Its exact operation remains unknown; Henry considers the possibility that entering it may be fatal rather than imprisoning. 366
Interstellar Relations
- Skrull Empire — Historical enemy of Krypton. Skrulls cannot fully imitate Kryptonian DNA and initially regard Henry as a potentially dangerous escaped Kryptonian. 342 343 359
- Kree Empire — Yon-Rogg claims the Kree sought Krypton as an ally against the Skrulls and retain historical records through the Supreme Intelligence. 381
- Earth / S.H.I.E.L.D. — Henry’s exposure as a Kryptonian leads Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. to investigate his past, debate a possible Superman connection, and consider green- or red-sun countermeasures. 370 411 470
- Eternals — Henry’s abilities and sensory analysis impress King and the other Eternals, who learn that his origin is Krypton. 413 420 745
Modern Discovery on Earth
Henry first suspects that he may be a Kryptonian after realizing that sunlight strengthens him and comparing his abilities to Superman. He initially considers alternative origins, including Daxamite ancestry. 8 18
A lead test eliminates Henry’s Daxamite theory: he has no allergic response to pure lead. 173
Skrulls independently identify Henry as a Kryptonian after their shapeshifting ability fails to reproduce his DNA. 342
General Talos publicly reveals Henry’s alleged Kryptonian identity during a Skrull infiltration incident, bringing the matter to Nick Fury, Carol Danvers, Barbara Morse, and Maria Rambeau’s attention. 359
Afterward, S.H.I.E.L.D. investigates Henry’s history in Alaska, the Yukon Territory, and Siberia, while internal factions debate whether he may be connected to the fictional Superman archetype. 370 470
John Garrett later attempts to coerce Henry with purported Kryptonite and expresses interest in creating Kryptonian soldiers, demonstrating that knowledge of the species’ weaknesses has become a practical threat on Earth. 593 594
