Background / History
Nao and Kazuto Kirigaya grew up alongside Seiya Wenren as his childhood friends and attended the Wenren family dojo. While Kazuto abandoned kendo at age seven, Nao continued practicing; Seiya's national championship and mastery of the Wenren Sword Style made him her idol. She hoped he would eventually inherit and reopen the closed dojo. 1
When Seiya bought NERvGear to enter Sword Art Online, Nao initially disliked gaming because it seemed likely to take time away from their kendo practice. She changed her view after learning that SAO's sword-focused full-dive environment could sharpen Seiya's reflexes and awareness, and she became interested in playing herself. 3
After Seiya awakened from his two-year coma, Nao cared for him and cooked porridge for him. Their closeness became more openly romantic when she admitted that she had cared for him because she had feelings for him. 85 262
Personality
Nao is deeply devoted to Seiya, combining admiration, protectiveness, and romantic jealousy. She is willing to take initiative to remain close to him, including joining Shangri-La Frontier, monitoring his meetings with female game friends, and joining forces with Asuna when she suspects another woman is pursuing him. 602 627 647
Her concern can make her impulsive: she mistakes Asuna for Death Gun and rushes to confront her, later claims to be Seiya's MMO girlfriend, and becomes suspicious whenever Seiya leaves to meet unnamed “friends.” 281 283 645
Despite her embarrassment around Seiya, Nao is resolute under pressure. During the Death Gun incident, she faces armed intruders with a bamboo sword rather than retreating. 85 298
