Background
Fang Chen was an orphan who entered the Glazed Sword Sect as a handyman. He suffered exploitation and bullying at Dragon Tiger Mountain under Cao Bin, but found fair treatment and support after being transferred to Thousand Bamboo Ridge under Steward Wu Qingfeng. Tian Hu and Zhang Tieniu attempted to steal his Exquisite Bamboo and attacked him; Fang Chen killed both men and broke into the Qi Refining Realm during the aftermath. 9 577
His first Qi Sensing Pavilion test confirmed the contradiction that defines his cultivation: he possessed Qi Refining cultivation but no Spiritual Root. He nevertheless became an Outer Sect disciple of Azure Cloud Peak and received the complete Glazed Qi Refining Art. 10 12
At Dog Head Ridge, Li Yanshan and Elder Yun became his early mentors. Fang Chen mastered the Misty Turtle Step to Great Accomplishment in less than an hour, received the opportunity to study the Flowing Cloud Sword Technique, and obtained the legacy associated with True Monarch Liuyun. 22 29
After earning second-class merit in Spirit Flame Valley, Fang Chen’s standing in the sect rose sharply. He later passed the Trial Path, became an Inner Disciple, and was examined with the Glazed Mirror, which exposed his deficient Life Wheel. Azure Cloud Daoist sent him to Glazed Peak, where True Person Liuli set him three trials; Fang Chen completed them and became Liuli’s disciple. 41 577
True Person Liuli later bestowed his remaining power upon Fang Chen before his death, deepening Fang Chen’s resolve to advance. Fang Chen subsequently entered Tianyuan Academy, where he fought elite disciples from major powers and continued to develop through combat, trials, and life-threatening cultivation. 93 176
As his power increased, Fang Chen became one of the Glazed Sword Sect’s principal defenders. He returned as a Saint to save Chen Xiaofei and Yan Ziyi, fought alongside the Dragon Race against the Demon Race, and repeatedly used his strength, formations, refinements, and resources to strengthen the sect and its allies. 440 549 800
Fang Chen eventually created the Floating Immortal Art, dividing it into nine attributes so that people of different physiques could cultivate it. Its first trials proved that even mortals without Spiritual Roots could condense True Qi. 2041
Appearance
When Fang Chen returned to save Ye Qingci, he appeared as a tall, imposing young man in a gray robe, with sword-like eyebrows, piercing eyes, and an exceptionally powerful aura. 1233
- His body can expand dramatically when he activates the Glazed Golden Body Art. 1059 1168
- Glazed Battle Runes appear across his skin during combat transformations; their color and density change with his cultivation. 198 360 875
- His clothing is frequently destroyed by the force of his transformations, after which he forms replacement robes or armor with his power. 323 826
Personality
Fang Chen is determined, stubborn, and unusually willing to enter dangerous battles for the sake of growth. He actively seeks life-and-death combat, viewing it as a way to refine himself and draw more power from the Floating Immortal Sword. 43 1059 2414
He is also practical and self-aware. Early in his cultivation, he recognized that his knowledge of the cultivation world was inadequate and deliberately acquired books to study basic principles and alchemy. Much later, he acknowledged his excessive dependence on the Floating Immortal Sword and worked to create his own cultivation methods. 43 1001 1002
Despite his strength, Fang Chen remains deeply attached to the people who treated him kindly when he was weak. Seeing Wu Qingfeng, Li Yanshan, and Elder Yun again stirred memories of the care they gave him after his time at Dragon Tiger Mountain. 577
