Background / History

Expansion into the Land of Rivers

Sunagakure entered the Ninja War from a position of poverty, sending forces into the Land of Rain to plunder before shifting its main strategic focus toward the fertile Land of Rivers. Its objective was to use the territory as an eastern route for an invasion of the Land of Fire. Konoha deployed rapidly, stopped the advance, and forced the Sand forces back to the Shinano River defense line 3 133.

Although Sunagakure controlled the Daimyo of the Land of Rivers and intended a long-term occupation, its administration was divided. The northern occupation zone was under direct military rule, while the southern pseudo-capital was dominated by the Daimyo and noble officials; the latter became poorer and more chaotic despite appearing safer 133.

Internal conflict

The village's Kazekage succession was contested among several factions. Sandstorm Gale represented the Elder Council and Puppet Unit, supported by Chiyo and Hai Rizō, while Rasa was a rival candidate; Pakura was retained by the Third Kazekage as an additional successor candidate 140 162.

Sunagakure's Elder Council and major clans held exceptional authority, in some respects exceeding that of the Kazekage. This oligarchic structure made the village dependent on the compliance of its clan leaders and elders during crises 374.

Defeat and occupation

During ceasefire negotiations, the Third Kazekage and Chiyo planned to assassinate Umino Sasuke and seize Monk Bunpuku, the One-Tails' Jinchuriki. Sasuke learned of the plot in advance and turned the ambush into the Battle of Red Rock Fortress, where Konoha captured both the Third Kazekage and Chiyo 368 371.

Konoha then launched a surprise offensive against Sunagakure itself. Umino Sasuke used a transformed Shadow Clone impersonating the Third Kazekage, together with the captured elders and clan heads, to order the village's surrender. The Iron Wall Legion occupied key positions with limited resistance and imposed martial law, disarmament, movement restrictions, and hostage controls over the Sand leadership 372 374.

The Third Kazekage and Chiyo refused an unconditional surrender treaty, after which Sasuke moved to destroy the remaining Sand forces. The collapse of morale among the auxiliary army left Rasa unable to break through Konoha's encirclement 375.

Military Doctrine and Techniques

Puppetry

Puppetry is Hidden Sand's defining military specialization. Its puppeteers use Chakra Threads and specialized chakra vibration frequencies to operate mechanical combat puppets; Wind and Earth chakra are considered especially suited to producing stable, resilient threads 51.

• Puppet Substitution Technique — A defensive escape technique used by Special Jonin puppeteers to evade lethal attacks by substituting a puppet in their place 11 84.
• Mechanical Shield Puppet — A defensive puppet that can separate into numerous small shields and form armor around its user; a refined model could withstand repeated projectile attacks 50.
• Rain of Senbon — A puppet mechanism that fires a wide-area barrage of senbon, used to pressure opponents within confined terrain or mist 48.
• Turbulent Windmill / Chaotic Pinwheel — Rotating puppet-blade techniques used for cutting attacks, interception, and dispersing mist or incoming techniques 83 105.
• Red Secret Techniques — Advanced multi-puppet methods, including Tessai's Three Machine Performance and Hai Rizō's Puppet Matrix 104 106.
• Ten Puppets of Chikamatsu — Ancient high-level puppets controlled by Hai Rizō; they were powerful enough to be treated as a Kage-level arsenal, though repeatedly damaged by Umino Sasuke's mecha puppets 265 274.

Wind Release and Sand Warfare

Hidden Sand ninja are notably proficient in Wind Release. Elite puppeteers combine wind techniques with puppet combat, allowing them to disrupt opponents, clear battlefield mist, and intensify their offense 13 17 48.

• The Will of Wind is described as a fierce, sandstorm-like offensive spirit that can drive Sand ninja to greater combat power in desperate situations 13.
• Sand Release users such as Karuo employed techniques including Sand Wall Defense, Flowing Sand Waterfall, and Sand Waterfall Burial to protect formations and delay pursuit 137 138.
• The Third Kazekage wielded Magnet Release: Sand Iron, using it to form wings, barriers, and dense area attacks 371.

Government and Society

Sunagakure was widely regarded as the poorest of the Five Great Ninja Villages, but Konoha's occupation revealed extensive stores of gold, rare metals, ninja-tool materials, explosive tags, and other supplies. The village's wealth was concentrated among the upper class, major ninja clans, and senior officials, while ordinary ninja and civilians endured severe deprivation 374.

Its harsh desert environment supported the development of puppetry: Sand ninja could hunt shelled summoning beasts for puppet materials and obtain poisons from the desert ecosystem 99.

Following its defeat, Konoha sought to keep Sunagakure weak without causing total disorder. Captured Sand ninja with vulnerable family ties were selected for dangerous auxiliary assignments, while the Land of Wind's new Sand Bandit army was positioned to counterbalance traditional oasis powers, the Temple of Wind, and any remaining Sand resistance 386 398.

Notable Figures and Factions

• Third Kazekage — Kazekage of Sunagakure; participated in the failed ceasefire ambush and was captured at Red Rock Fortress 368 371.
• Chiyo — Elder and master puppeteer; pursued revenge against Umino Sasuke, was captured in the Battle of Red Rock Fortress, and later refused the surrender treaty 368 371 375.
• Hai Rizō — Veteran Kage-level puppeteer and controller of the Ten Puppets of Chikamatsu; repeatedly fought Umino Sasuke while attempting to protect or avenge his subordinates and disciples 264 265 274.
• Rasa — Kazekage candidate and commander of the Land of Rain defense line; his request for reinforcements helped leave Sunagakure vulnerable to Konoha's surprise attack 279 372.
