Background and History
Early life and Shaolin initiation
Wang Anfeng grew up as a poor orphan in Great Liang Village, where he was bullied by other children but aided by sympathetic neighbors. While on the mountain, he discovered a silver bracer that bound itself to him and transported him into the Great Jianghu world. 1
Guided to Shaolin by Yuan Ci, Wang Anfeng was accepted as his disciple after stating that martial arts should protect the innocent. He formally recognized Yuan Ci as his master after the monk watched over his first four-hour meditation. 3 4
He trained Shaolin Long Fist for one hundred days, smashing trees to practice and meditating to restore his depleted Inner Qi. His need for food increased sharply with cultivation, motivating him to combine martial training with logging and other work. 7 8
Journey to Wangxian County
At Uncle Li’s request, Wang Anfeng carried a letter and a Black Iron Wine Pot to Doctor Li in Wangxian County. He refused to sell the entrusted wine even for a large sum, citing his father’s teaching that a promise outweighs wealth. 9 11
On reaching the county town, he intervened when ruffians extorted Doctor Li’s family. This was his first real fight; he defeated the group with Shaolin Long Fist and the Vigorous Step Technique, then paid compensation for the injuries he inflicted. Doctor Li, Li Kangsheng, thereafter treated him as family. 12 13
Phoenix Banquet
Wang Anfeng protected the servant girl Xue’er from Wang Bai, subdued Wang Bai’s horse, and returned both the horse and a stolen hairpin rather than keep either for himself. His debate with Xiahou Xuan over principle and conscience ended in mutual respect. 25 26
Using a Phoenix Post, he entered the Phoenix Banquet at Willow Catkin Villa. In the arena, he defeated Zeng Bo and then won eight consecutive matches, deliberately seeking stronger opponents and asking each challenger to “grant” him a defeat. He also fought the Dragon General Xu Ziyang after Xu temporarily sealed his own internal force. 27 32 33
He abandoned further rewards and risked punishment to see off Xue Thirteen, whom he considered his first friend. When Liu Wuqiu later poisoned the banquet guests, Wang Anfeng killed an attempted captor and escaped with Xiahou Xuan and Huangfu Xiong. 35 37
Return to Great Liang Village
After learning the basics of the Taisu Needle Technique, Wang Anfeng pawned the Dragon Roaming Moon Gazing Sword and used most of the money to support Li Kangsheng’s charitable medical work. He returned to Great Liang Village with the Green Dappled Horse and had attained pure internal force. 41 42
Mr. Ying subsequently scattered his internal force and subjected him to harsh body-tempering: carrying chains and water, practicing without Inner Qi, and consuming Qi Gathering Pills. During this training, Wang Anfeng killed a massive black bear by grappling and strangling it with his chains. 43 44 45 49
Appearance
Wang Anfeng is a clean-featured youth with faint eyebrows, quiet features, and a pure, scholarly air. His usual coarse blue clothing initially conceals this impression, but his bearing becomes more apparent when he wears proper martial attire. 24 31
- Usually wears simple blue cloth clothing suited to village work. 24
- Wore light-blue training clothes and a dark-blue outer robe at the Phoenix Banquet. 31
- Later trains while covered in heavy iron chains. 45
- Often carries or rides the fierce but obedient Green Dappled Horse. 36 42
Personality
Wang Anfeng is sincere, humble, and guided by the principles taught by his father and Shaolin. He refuses to break promises for profit, admits defeat plainly, and sees protecting ordinary people as a martial artist’s duty. 3 11 18
Although initially inexperienced and prone to fighting by instinct, he actively reflects on his flaws and seeks correction from stronger opponents. His time at the Phoenix Banquet makes him more ambitious, tactically aware, and willing to use decisive force when lives are at risk. 15 18 32 37
His kindness does not make him easily manipulated. He returns what is not his, challenges Xiahou Xuan when the latter questions his conscience, and prioritizes friends over rewards or reputation. 26 34 35
