Background / History
Barry first realizes that he has gained superpowers in private. Excited but cautious, he resolves to hide his identity until he has mastered his abilities and acquired an appropriate battle suit; he also considers joining either the Justice League or the Justice Society. 178
His early use of super-speed is unstable. Although he can outrun Kryptonian pursuers, he lacks combat training and is vulnerable whenever his speed is matched. His ordinary clothes burn to ash during high-speed movement, forcing him to seek a suit that can endure friction and discharge static electricity. 195
Hespera captures Barry for Hades, who seeks his Speed Force. In the Underworld, a metallic bug provides him with an advanced suit and the codename The Flash. Barry names the device “Little Flash.” 195 196
Barry later becomes involved with the Justice League and develops into a more openly heroic speedster. He rescues civilians during a bus crash, protects Iris West, and refuses lethal force even when capable of taking an opponent’s life. 259 260 267
Appearance
Barry is described as slender and youthful in build. His appearance changes significantly depending on which speedster suit he is using.
- His first high-speed runs leave him naked when ordinary clothing burns away. 195
- His original Flash suit produces electrical arcs by discharging static charge and has a semi-closed mask. 196
- His advanced suit can deploy nearly instantaneously from a wristwatch and is assisted by the AI Kid Flash. 259
- In an altered timeline, he wears a durable, ring-contained suit that initially appears black after being repainted. 402 404
- Dane later supplies him with a nanomaterial battle suit capable of taking different forms. 410
Personality
Barry is enthusiastic about becoming a superhero, with an initially youthful and comic-book-inspired view of his powers. His excitement repeatedly gives way to embarrassment or fear when confronted with the practical dangers of super-speed, combat, and public exposure. 178 195 197
He is fundamentally compassionate and reluctant to kill. He prioritizes saving civilians, comforts Iris after rescuing her, and earns Sinestro’s admiration for sparing an enemy despite having the opportunity to kill. 260 267
His deepest vulnerability is his family. Nora Allen’s death and Henry Allen’s wrongful imprisonment drive him to study forensic technology, search for exculpatory evidence, and eventually attempt to alter history. Although he recognizes the possible consequences, his wish to give his mother another chance repeatedly overcomes his caution. 212 395 400
Abilities & Skills
Super-Speed and Speed Force
Barry can move at speeds that make the outside world appear frozen, generate electrical arcs, and rapidly cross vast distances.
- Evades Kryptonian pursuers whose speed is slightly below his own. 195
- Can deploy and operate equipment at super-speed. 259
- Uses his speed to rescue people from a bus crash and remove Iris from danger. 259 260
- Recovers from injuries more quickly than normal, though severe damage can still incapacitate him. 409 410
- Requires substantial sugar intake; dangerously low blood sugar can stop him from running. 196 403
- His speed does not grant Batman-level combat skill or Superman-level durability. 195
Time Travel
By exceeding his limits, Barry can break through time-and-space barriers and enter a temporal nexus he calls the Speed Force Bowl or Time Bowl.
- Views scenes and voices from across his personal history within the temporal nexus. 396
- Travels to 2004 in an attempt to prevent Reverse-Flash from murdering Nora. 402
- His interference kills Reverse-Flash but results in Nora being framed for the murder. 402 403
- Repeated alterations destabilize history, erase or alter key figures, and create destructive convergence points. 413 414 415
- Barry ultimately becomes a central stabilizing figure when altered timelines collide to create the Flashpoint Universe. 415
Forensic Knowledge
Barry studies forensic technology in pursuit of evidence that could clear Henry Allen’s name.
- Investigates Nora’s case and seeks proof of Henry’s innocence. 212 400
- In an altered timeline, the local Barry’s room is filled with case files, testimonies, and analysis attempting to establish Nora’s innocence. 403
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Flash battle suit — A high-speed suit designed to withstand friction heat and discharge excess electrical charge. 195 196

- Nanotechnology suit — Barry’s advanced suit can condense into a small button and deploy from nanomaterials. 402
- Ring-contained battle suit — A durable, elastic suit that compresses into a ring by evacuating its internal air. 402
- Kryptonian metal dagger — Used against Zod’s forces during the altered-timeline Kryptonian conflict. 410

- Doomsday Flash / Old Barry — Alternate Barry from another timeline. The two initially interact like brothers and exchange battle suits. 401 402
- Thomas Wayne — Flashpoint Batman. Initially tortures Barry for information, then becomes a reluctant ally and recreates the experiment that restores Flashpoint Barry’s powers. 417 418 419
- Constantine — Temporary ally who helps Barry and Nora escape magical pursuers through Wormhole Magic. 447 448
