Because of the watchers appearing around the experimental field, Landen had to dispatch extra personnel to prevent any accidents. All the Lizardfolk Spearmen who had followed him were left behind. With a Dark Elf stationed there daily, ordinary scouts no longer dared to approach the experimental field, let alone tamper with it.
However, this disrupted some of Landen's original plans.
Landen had originally intended to modify the Lizardfolk Warriors similarly to the Hobgoblin Knights. There were no absolutely useless races in this world; many races were considered weak due to innate personality flaws, like goblins, or because they hadn't found their most suitable profession.
Yet, Landen possessed extensive knowledge about these professions.
This included information about Lizardfolk.
Lizardfolk were a highly intelligent race, far smarter than goblins. While goblins had only a few basic professions, Lizardfolk had many more. Historically, there had even been legendary figures like Lizardfolk Sword Saints who reached the pinnacle of power.
Beyond such exceptional individuals, Lizardfolk also had many soldier professions. For instance, Spearmen could perform long-range melee attacks, while Shortbowmen and Archers could attack from afar. Furthermore, in some large Lizardfolk tribes, magic-user professions like Lizardfolk Shamans, Lizardfolk Witch Doctors, or Lizardfolk Druids emerged. Any Lizardfolk unit equipped with Lizardfolk Shamans, Lizardfolk Witch Doctors, and Lizardfolk Druids would see its combat effectiveness multiply.
However, Landen was still not satisfied with this Lizardfolk unit. In his opinion, while the combat power of these Lizardfolk was already quite impressive, it hadn't reached its full potential. For Landen, whose territory was severely lacking in creature resources, the goal was to maximize the utility of every single unit.
Take the current Lizardfolk soldiers, for example. A group of Spearmen and Shortbowmen already formed a decent unit. Yet, in Landen's view, their power was actually diluted because of their chosen professions.
With a group of Spearmen, he couldn't even divide them into two rows. The drawback of having only one row was that after they fully thrust their spears, they lacked the opportunity to retract their meters-long spears and prepare for a second attack. The cycle was too long. If there were no defensive units in front of them, the enemy would already be upon them and attacking by the time they retracted their spears.
The problem with the Shortbowmen was even more apparent. This issue had been glaringly obvious when Hogg led a group of Hobgoblin Knights to break through the Qivita Family's defensive formation in that passage.
This problem could be explained in two words: "too few."
Setting aside the powerful archers who had reached advanced levels, even among ordinary soldiers, those who could inflict significant damage in combat were never due to the impact of a few arrows, but rather the widespread, multi-point damage caused by concentrated volleys.
Imagine if, as the Hobgoblin Knights charged from the mountain walls on both sides towards the defensive formation, a barrage of over a hundred arrows rained down, completely covering that area. Even if they managed to break through, at least half of the Hobgoblins would be riddled with arrows like sieves.
Large-scale concentrated attacks had always been the most effective and best form of ranged combat, whether it involved arrows, magic, or anything else.
With the troops under Landen's command, if these Lizardfolk soldiers were all archers, the damage caused by a single volley could even surpass the damage from a continuous barrage by a hundred archers.
Therefore, after acquiring these Lizardfolk soldiers, Landen had already planned to transform them into versatile soldiers capable of both melee and ranged combat.
However, due to the presence of watchers, Landen was forced to assign five Lizardfolk to guard the experimental field. Thus, he could only proceed with modifying the Lizardfolk Warriors first. With a fifth of the unit gone, the troop's strength would inevitably be affected, but there was no other way.
"My Lord, you summoned me?" Kazvito stood before Landen. His towering physique meant that even when bowing, he still looked down at Landen. His voice was humble, but his true thoughts were unknown. If Landen didn't have the Lord System, he might have been deceived by Kazvito's humble demeanor. However, the loyalty rating of - in the Lord System served as a constant reminder that these individuals could betray him at any moment.
"Kazvito, how much do you know about your race's history?" Landen put down the book he was holding. It was the one he had taken when he left Solennord, though now he only used it for show.
"My race's history?" Kazvito was taken aback, clearly not expecting Landen to ask him such a question. He tilted his head in thought and said, "Apologies, Lord. I don't know much. I only know that our race once ruled this world."
"Uh... alright, you don't need to say more," Landen interrupted Kazvito. What the powerful Lizardfolk chieftain said with that proud expression was essentially the "common history" shared by most highly intelligent races in this world.
Simply put, their race had a glorious history and once ruled the world, and so on. In reality, except for a few races, including humans, who had truly ruled the world, the historical accounts of other races were merely wishful thinking fueled by a sense of superiority.
"Let's get back to business," Landen said. "Have you heard of Lizardfolk Javelin Throwers?"
Kazvito thought for a moment and shook his head. "No, Lord."
"It's not surprising you don't know. This profession last appeared at least a thousand years ago. Back then, your tribe probably didn't even exist yet," Landen said. "Your race's existence is no later than that of Orcs or Minotaurs, and historically, there have been many strong individuals who reached the pinnacle. However, if we talk about the strongest Lizardfolk units, it would be the Lizardfolk Javelin Thrower units."
Kazvito's vertical pupils, hidden beneath thick eyelids, shone brightly. He said urgently, "Please, Lord, teach me how to train them. I need them!"
"No, you've misunderstood, Kazvito. I need them," Landen corrected calmly. Kazvito's eyes flashed with ferocity for a moment, but Landen smiled indifferently and continued, "Of course, I can let you lead them."
He paused and then added, "Next, I plan to teach you some basics, and then you will train them. So, are you still going to speak to me like this?"
Kazvito remained silent for a moment, then finally crouched down obediently. He looked up at Landen, his posture resembling that of a pet dog, or rather, a pet lizard
