Background

Chen Xuan spent three years studying martial arts under Yang Qingshan. When Yang attempted to kill him with the hidden Mountain Suppression Fist, Chen Xuan defeated and killed his master with a sharp weapon concealed in his fist seals. His use of the concealed weapon drew criticism as a violation of martial virtue, but it established his willingness to use any effective means to survive. 2

After entering the Qi Refining world, he completed his first Ascension and learned of Immortal Qi, hidden demons, and the Southern Wilderness feast from Chu Huo Gun. His unusually stable foundation contrasted with his initially modest qi-and-blood strength. 6

The White Ganoderma Jade Herb allowed Chen Xuan to nurture Immortal Qi unusually early. His martial foundation remained central to his cultivation: his hard-qigong fighting style was noted for its overwhelming, brutally direct force. 10 14

Appearance

At the Spirit Travel stage, Chen Xuan is described as a white-clad young man with flying black hair and skin as translucent as nine-colored glazed glass. His restrained aura conceals immense vitality and blood essence. 371

  • Can transform into a massive black dragon through the Purple Firmament Dragon Transformation Art. 180
  • In dragon form, he has black-gold scales, light-golden eyes, prominent horns, and can wield weapons and armor with his dragon claws. 180
  • His Five Viscera Soldier Martial Immortal Body manifests Five Elements phenomena and seated internal gods in battle. 229 275

Personality

Chen Xuan is intensely pragmatic in combat. He will exploit hidden weapons, ambushes, superior artifacts, and an opponent’s mistakes rather than bind himself to conventional martial etiquette. 2 128 His ruthlessness is directed primarily at enemies and hostile factions; when confronted with rumors that he indiscriminately kills for the Human Emperor Banner, he rejects the idea of harming unrelated people. 131

He is exceptionally focused on cultivation. Even while facing danger, he studies unfamiliar secret arts, searches for weaknesses in his own techniques, and treats difficult opponents as opportunities to improve. 145 180 262 This resolve extends to seemingly impossible undertakings, including merging eight conflicting Immortal Qi True Scriptures despite repeated failures. 276 277

Despite his severity, Chen Xuan can be protective and loyal toward allies. He retrieves Pei Yuan Yong from the lake despite their conflict, assists Yan Yushu through her Cauldron advancement, and offers Xiao Hou aid against Yao Chen Zi. 87 166 284

Southern Wilderness Saint

Chen Xuan’s defeat of the Peacock Mountain Lord proves he can challenge ordinary early-stage Cauldrons without relying solely on his Divine Soul Body. The Southern Wilderness’ ghosts and monsters increasingly recognize him as the Southern Wilderness Saint rather than merely a recipient of the Mountain Ghost Lady’s favor. 180
