At those words, Yuko looked at him with a hint of pity.
Toshiro bristled. "What's that look supposed to mean?!"
Yuko sighed and said bluntly, "How sad. You've only got two days left to live."
Toshiro's face darkened, and he nearly jumped up. "Do I have to die?! Huh?!"
"Come on, you two captains, stop arguing." Rangiku stepped between them. "I'd like to get off work and go drinking."
A vein throbbed on Toshiro's forehead. "Do you even understand how important this mission is?"
"I'm taking it seriously, aren't I?" Rangiku spread her hands, then called to the others. "All right, everyone, take your positions."
The Soul Reapers dispersed. At Rangiku's command, they formed hand seals and raised a barrier to keep their work hidden.
Under Toshiro's murderous glare, Rangiku said helplessly to Yuko, "I'd love to have a drink with you, but today really won't work."
Yuko nodded slightly. "I understand. That's how it goes when you have a captain like him to look after."
Toshiro's eyelid twitched, but he said nothing.
"Next time, then. You have to invite me next time, okay?"
Yuko broke into a sweat. "...No. Rangiku, that sounds an awful lot like you're raising a death flag too."
Jokes were one thing, but hearing someone involved say it herself left Yuko at a loss.
Toshiro shot her a sidelong glance. "Wasn't she taking your side?"
Yuko stared at him in surprise. "Was that a comeback?"
"Heh."
"You two have fun. I'm heading home."
Yuko did not hold them up any longer. Setting up a barrier in Karakura Town was hardly the end of the job; they would probably be busy for quite a while.
