| Qi Refining into Gang | 666 | Guan Yu and Zhang Fei had reached at least this realm by the beginning of the Yellow Turban Rebellion, six years before the Hulao Pass campaign. |
| Externalized Qi | 666 | Identified as a fierce general who had externalized Qi; he can project gang qi as massive blade auras. |
| Refined Moonlight Three Slashes | 759 | Reworked the technique so its power rises gradually with successive strikes, avoiding the earlier backlash. |
| Compressed single-strike Moonlight Three Slashes | 849 | Condensed three slashes into one highly compressed, near-tangible crescent of gang qi; the move destroys Nanpi's reinforced city gate but leaves him at roughly 80% combat power. |
Background
Guan Yu is from Xie County in Hedong Commandery. Wang Xuan recognizes both his name and origin when Liu Bei introduces him, addressing him as “Lord Guan”; Guan Yu is surprised by the familiarity but responds respectfully. 644
Before joining Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei were already martial artists of at least the Qi Refining into Gang realm. Despite this, both became Liu Bei's sworn brothers during the early Yellow Turban era. 666
He was formerly a wandering knight and retains the pride associated with that background. During the Nanpi campaign, he personally enters an enemy tunnel and scouts the city rather than allow the undercover operatives to bear all the danger. 845
Appearance
Guan Yu is immediately recognizable by his imposing, carefully cultivated appearance and unhurried bearing.
- Fiery red face. 661
- Narrow phoenix eyes and silkworm-like eyebrows. 661
- Three long strands of beard reaching his chest. 705 849
- Usually wears iconic emerald-green armor, later described alongside a Green Dragon helmet and armor. 849 998
- Commonly carries the Green Dragon Crescent Blade. 661 998
- Rides a dark-red horse gifted by Gongsun Zan during the battle against Hua Xiong. 660
Personality
Guan Yu is notably taciturn, often answering with only a few words. Outside of fighting and reading, he appears bored or disinterested; his relaxed, half-lidded expression is therefore frequently mistaken for laziness. 658 661
He is intensely proud of his martial ability and especially driven to surpass Lü Bu. This pride makes him susceptible to direct provocation, such as when Wang Xuan challenges his weapon control while assigning him to carve a massive stone roller. 711 He dislikes opponents blessed with overwhelming natural strength, as their physical advantages can diminish the value of technique. 678
Although proud, Guan Yu values soldiers' lives and avoids unnecessary losses. During the Qianzhong campaign, he treats a siege largely as training rather than forcing costly assaults; he also praises Nanpi's undercover operatives because their tunnel could save countless soldiers during a siege. 773 845
His confidence can develop into impatience and obsession. Gan Ning's success pushes him to attack Nanpi immediately, while the opportunity to strike Jingzhou later drives him to disregard Jia Xu's caution and pursue Xiangyang. 847 998 999
Abilities & Skills
Externalized Qi
Guan Yu is an Externalized Qi general capable of releasing gang qi as destructive green or azure blade auras.
- Can unleash crescent-shaped blade lights dozens of meters long. 661 680
- His projected attacks can break the sound barrier and produce battlefield-wide shockwaves. 660 680
- Can fight effectively even under army cloud qi suppression through superior physique and martial prowess. 688
- His presence and large-scale attacks can intimidate entire formations into collapse. 705 776
Moonlight Three Slashes
Guan Yu's signature ultimate technique is a three-strike killing art in which each slash grows heavier and more powerful than the last.
- Designed to end battles quickly; Guan Yu is particularly dangerous against opponents unable to endure his opening burst. 663
- Its original form carries a temporary drawback: after use, his strength falls by roughly 20%. 663
- Requires an exceptionally durable mount, as an ordinary horse would be killed by the recoil. 663
- The initial version travels only in a straight line because of its immense power. 663
- Against Lü Bu, the final crescent-shaped slash reaches nearly one hundred meters in height. 680
- The technique can clear large sections of a battlefield and sharply raise allied morale. 776
- Guan Yu later passes the technique to Wei Yan without reservation. 844
Compressed Moonlight Three Slashes
Guan Yu develops a version that compresses the force of all three slashes into a single strike.
- Produces a near-solid crescent of tightly compressed gang qi. 849
- Shatters Nanpi's iron-reinforced, cloud-qi-enhanced city gate in one blow. 849
- Later dents and heavily damages Jiangling's reinforced water gate. 1005
- Expends a major portion of his gang qi, reducing his remaining combat power to about 80%. 849
Martial Skill
Guan Yu is a technique-focused warrior whose power is not based solely on raw strength.
- His combat coefficient is described as roughly 1.2, above Zhao Yun's usual range, despite Zhao Yun's advantages in talent, inheritance, secret arts, technique, and gang qi intensity. 686
- Can halt Lü Bu's assault with a seemingly ordinary strike containing his full spirit and energy. 686
- Huang Zhong defeats him in a pure martial exchange, exposing gaps in Guan Yu's strength, saber finesse, and gang qi reserves; this drives Guan Yu to reassess his own skills. 759
- His firm will resists mental pressure better than most, though Huang Zhong's spirit-targeting saber art can still disrupt him. 759
Command and Morale
Guan Yu's image and battlefield presence are strategic assets in their own right.
- His calm appearance, red face, long beard, and casual bearing greatly raise allied morale. 705
- Wang Xuan considers him one of the few generals able to seize an enemy commander's head amid an army and terrify tens of thousands into losing the will to fight. 705
- Captures the Yellow Turban leader alongside Zhang Fei and Dian Wei in under ten seconds, causing the enemy formation to collapse. 705
- Uses disciplined formations and azure dragon-shaped cloud qi while personally serving as the spearhead of an assault on Wuxian County. 998
Strategic Command
Guan Yu does not consider himself a mere charging general and repeatedly employs deception, scouting, and calculated siege tactics.
- Maintains intelligence personnel inside Nanpi for years and receives detailed information on its garrison, leadership, supplies, defenses, and major families. 845
- Personally infiltrates Nanpi through a tunnel, tours the city, and assesses conditions before the attack. 845 846
- Uses his attack on Yiling and Jiangling to exhaust and mislead Jingzhou's defenders while preparing a different breakthrough plan. 1006
- Lets Guan Ping lead difficult assaults so his son can gain practical command and battlefield experience. 1002
- Leaves postwar administration to Jia Xu while focusing on the next military objective. 999

Story Role / Major Arcs
Hulao Pass and Hua Xiong's Capture
When Hua Xiong breaks through to Externalized Qi and intimidates the allied lords, Guan Yu accepts Cao Cao's challenge to face him. Ordered to capture Hua Xiong alive, Guan Yu rides out leisurely, overwhelms Hua Xiong with massive blade aura, seals his gang qi, and returns with the unconscious general in tow. 659 660 661 663
The feat turns Guan Yu into the allies' most celebrated warrior. Soldiers chant praise for him across the battlefield, frightening Dong Zhuo's army, while Cao Cao and Yuan Shao both attempt to win his favor. Guan Yu dismisses Yuan Shao's lengthy praise with a brief “You flatter me.” 661
Battle Against Lü Bu
Guan Yu joins Zhang Fei against Lü Bu at Hulao Pass, building momentum before unleashing three enormous blade lights. Though the attack demonstrates his extraordinary strength, Lü Bu withstands the combined challenge of Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Zhao Yun, and Dian Wei. 680 686
The battle reinforces Guan Yu's determination to surpass Lü Bu. He later accepts Wang Xuan's challenge to carve a ten-ton stone roller, motivated by the comparison to his rival. 711
Qingzhou and the Northern Campaigns
Guan Yu becomes a central force in Liu Bei's campaigns, repeatedly using personal martial power to break enemy morale. He captures a Yellow Turban leader with Zhang Fei and Dian Wei, then leads operations around Qianzhong, Qiantong, Chonghe, and Gaocheng. 705 773 776
He supports Wei Yan's independent ambush plan, worries silently while Wei Yan and Guan Ping are away, and recognizes their achievements when Chonghe falls. 773 776 844
Nanpi Infiltration and Capture
While besieging Nanpi, Guan Yu relies on long-established undercover agents for intelligence. He then enters the enemy city through a tunnel with only a small group, surveys half the city, and even eats breakfast there before returning to launch the assault. 845 846
Impatient after learning of Gan Ning's victory elsewhere, he orders an immediate noon attack. He later leads troops through the city tunnel and destroys Nanpi's reinforced gate with his compressed single-strike technique. 847 849
Shu and Jingzhou Offensive
During the eastern Shu campaign, Guan Yu faces sabotaged roads and poisoned water sources, forcing him to report the logistical crisis to Wang Xuan. 977
After Shu's noble families turn against Xiahou Dun, Guan Yu changes course at Yufu and launches an ambitious counteroffensive toward Jingzhou. He rapidly captures Wuxian, Badong, and Zigui, then focuses on Yiling, Jiangling, and ultimately Xiangyang despite Jia Xu's warnings. 998 999 1000
Guan Yu uses the Yiling siege to train Guan Ping and deceive Jingzhou's defenders, while his actual plan is to exploit the water gate and seize Jiangling. 1002 1005 1006
