Inside the Owl Observation Tower.
Everywhere lay the remains and feathers of dismembered owls. On the walls, the floor, the light fixtures.
Several newborn owlets had been nailed to the wall with iron spikes, their eyeballs brutally gouged out and placed in small bowls, sprinkled with salt and pepper and chopped scallions, then set on the dining table. It seemed they had already been half eaten; one plate still held a short length of bitten, flattened eyeball.
"It's closed again today. Stellar observation maintenance? Let's go, Andy. We'll come back another time."
Students' voices drifted faintly from outside.
Andy stood beneath the tower, craning his head up at the school's most famous astronomical observation tower. He kept feeling that something was wrong, yet he could not put his finger on what exactly it was.
"Come on, Andy." The girl beside him tugged on his arm.
"Fine, fine." Andy cast aside the jumble of ominous feelings in his head. He had had enough. If he did not indulge himself while his body was still in good shape, he might not get another chance later.
"Let's go! We'll take a walk by the lake. A friend of mine has been loving that place lately," Andy said with a smile.
"Oh? The lake? I heard that place isn't very lucky."
"It's fine. My friend has been hanging around there for ages, and nothing's happened to him." Andy waved it off.
