Kelly King accompanied an elderly woman on a slow stroll across the lush green lawn. The sun was warm, the breeze pleasant, and several of the Capo family's young grandchildren played in the distance.
The elderly woman was the birth mother of Kelly King's husband, the merchant Capo. She and Kelly got along very well, practically friends despite their age difference.
"The situation has been very unclear lately. The government has been making major moves one after another, and even the military keeps heading out for exercises. There are rumors at the border that people have seen quite a few Anomalous creatures. It was even in the newspapers," the old woman sighed softly. "This world seems to be growing more chaotic by the day."
"Are you worried about Serena and Bolan? Children and grandchildren have their own fortunes. They're grown now, no longer children. They have their own responsibilities and lives. There's no need to worry about them," Kelly King comforted her gently.
"That's true, that's reasonable. It's just that when one gets old, one naturally starts thinking about more things. Back when I was busy with business, I never worried about this or that." The old woman shook her head.
"Am I any different? You know about my son—the son my ex-husband and I had, Jack." Kelly King sighed as well. "He gives me even more trouble than Serena and Bolan."
The old woman nodded too.
"Of all things he could have done, he had to become a detective—and a front-line police officer at that. He's really put you through a lot." She had never thought much of that child called Jack, either.
