Background / History

Nicol Bolas was initially among the weaker Elder Dragons and survived by hiding from stronger kin and scavenging prey at the fringes. He and Ugin learned magic, awakened their innate talents, and ignited their Planeswalker Sparks during the Elder Dragon War. Their rise enabled them to defeat their siblings and become the only Elder Dragon Planeswalkers. 852 961

Across his long life, Bolas defeated and sealed the powerful being Maraleki, was once defeated and banished by Mezer Jef, then manipulated Venser and his companions into freeing him. After returning, he defeated Teferi, overcame other opponents, and killed Ugin on Tarkir. 961

The transmutation of Planeswalker Sparks after the repair of temporal rifts deprived Bolas of immortality and caused his accumulated power to drain away. To reverse this decline, he consumed Alara’s core mana, cultivated an Eternalized army on Amonkhet, infiltrated Ravnica’s guilds, and prepared the Elder Spell to seize other Planeswalkers’ Sparks. 384 488 961
