The cramped attic storage room of Oak House Orphanage had become Lynn's only sanctuary. It was piled high with discarded desks and chairs, dusty old picture frames, and odds and ends reeking of mothballs, with only a small skylight letting in the gray London daylight. Mrs. Smith, the matron, with her hawk-like eyes, would never glance toward this corner. Lynn struggled to drag an old folding screen to the doorway, barely carving out a hidden space, then carefully pulled the deep blue Nameless Star Book from inside his clothes.
The cover was still icy cold, but that faint vibration, like a sleeping pulse, came through clearly against his fingertips, resonating strangely with the steady-burning "spark" inside him. Lynn sat cross-legged on the cold floor, using the dim light from the skylight, holding his breath with an almost reverent feeling, and opened the thick cover.
There was no imagined blaze of light, no obscure Latin or runes. What met his eyes were yellowed, oddly textured ancient pages, densely covered with completely unfamiliar symbols. They weren't simple geometric shapes, but more like a strange fusion of abstract star trails, flowing energy ripples, and complex geometric structures. The lines sometimes flowed smooth as a river of stars pouring down, sometimes jagged as a thicket of thorns, intertwining and weaving into deep, mysterious patterns. There were no text annotations, no page numbers—only these silent symbols telling ancient secrets in stillness.
Lynn reached out a finger, with a mix of awe and hesitation, and gently brushed over a set of symbols on the page. That set depicted a pattern of three nested spirals and several sharp angles.
Bzz...
The page under his fingertip seemed to come alive! A vibration, fainter than when he'd touched the cover but clearer, instantly transmitted through, carrying an indescribable rhythm. At the same time, the "spark" inside him gave a sudden leap, and a faint but real warmth surged, traveling along the veins of his arm, through the touch of his fingertip, as if about to pour into the symbols on the page!
Lynn startled, instinctively wanting to pull his hand back. But in that split second, a strong intuition seized him—Guide it!
He forced himself to steady his mind, no longer resisting the warmth from within, and instead tried to "watch" the spark with his will, imagining it splitting off an extremely fine, hair-thin strand of energy, slowly and tentatively flowing along his intent toward his fingertip, into that strange symbol.
The vibration under his fingertip suddenly intensified! The originally still symbols seemed infused with life, the edges of the lines glowing with an extremely faint, barely visible Silver Flowing Light! The light raced along the symbol's path once, then vanished instantly. The whole process was as quick as a blink; if Lynn hadn't been completely focused, he would have missed it.
An indescribable clarity, like a clear spring, flowed through Lynn's consciousness in an instant! Though he still couldn't understand the symbol's specific meaning, he clearly "felt" a certain "state" it represented—a slight "disturbance" of energy, a "tremor" prototype of spatial structure.
Success?! He had actually guided that power inside him!
A surge of immense joy and disbelief flooded Lynn. His heart pounded wildly, and fine sweat broke out on his forehead—not from exertion, but from intense concentration and the shock of success. He looked down at his fingertip, then at the now-calm symbols on the page. The "spark" inside him seemed to have dimmed slightly from the "output," but it still burned steadily, with a faint sign of slow recovery.
"This feeling... it's incredible!" he muttered to himself, his voice trembling. This was no longer the passive, shocking contact at the library door, but his first active, conscious guidance and use of that mysterious power within! The Star Book was indeed the key to understanding and mastering this power.
He couldn't wait to try the next symbol. But when he focused again, trying to draw another strand of energy from the spark, a slight dizziness hit him, and a clear mental fatigue set in, as if he'd just done a high-intensity mental calculation. The spark inside also signaled a "weakness."
"Looks like... this power also needs 'training' and recovery, and can't be overused." Lynn immediately became alert, suppressing his excitement, and closed the Star Book. He knew the principle of "having a treasure invites trouble"; before fully mastering the power, caution and concealment were essential. He carefully hid the book deep inside a broken, lockable leather suitcase, covered it with a few old clothes, and finally breathed a sigh of relief.
That afternoon, in the familiar corner of the community library.
Hermione practically ran in on time, her little face flushed, her curly bangs a bit messy from running too fast. As soon as she saw Lynn, her eyes lit up like two sparkling brown gems.
"Lynn!" She trotted over, dropped her heavy backpack on the table, and eagerly pulled out Basic Charms and Introductory Magical Theory, her voice rising with excitement. "Look! Last night I tried that 'Mind Guidance' again! Even though nothing 'appeared,' I felt... I felt like the air was a little different! Like... like the slight tremor before water boils!" She struggled to describe her subtle feeling, gesturing with her small hands.
Watching her excitement, Lynn's heart stirred. Hermione's talent for sensing energy was indeed innately sharp! Though she hadn't truly awakened her magic yet, her intuition was already far beyond ordinary.
"Really? That's great, Hermione!" Lynn praised sincerely, his gaze warm. "It shows your 'perception' is very keen. Maybe you're very close to finding that 'key.'" He used the metaphor of the "key" he'd mentioned before.
Hermione nodded vigorously, her face glowing with the joy of being recognized. "Mm! I believe it! Oh, Lynn," she suddenly leaned in closer, her big eyes sparkling with curiosity and a hint of mischief, "yesterday... you seemed really interested in that strange book on the lost-and-found shelf?" She meant the Star Book.
Lynn's heart tightened slightly, but he kept his composure. "Oh, that book had a very special cover, silver star patterns, very eye-catching in the rain. Later, the librarian let me borrow it, said no one claimed it." He selectively revealed part of the truth.
"Really? Let me see it!" Hermione's curiosity was instantly ignited, and she eagerly reached out her small hand.
Lynn hesitated. The Star Book was too mysterious and could easily attract unwanted attention. But looking at Hermione's pure, knowledge-hungry eyes, a thought flashed through his mind—maybe he could share a little "safe" secret? He needed someone familiar with this world's "common sense" to discuss things with, and Hermione was undoubtedly the best choice, provided he was cautious enough.
"The book... it's a bit old and very special. The librarian told me to take good care of it." Lynn chose his words carefully. "But yesterday, when I tried to read it, something... a little strange happened." He deliberately lowered his voice, creating a secret-sharing atmosphere.
"What? What happened?" Hermione was immediately hooked, leaning forward until she was almost on the table.
Lynn spread his palm, facing up. "I tried to concentrate, like... well, like how you 'feel the air tremble,'" he guided her train of thought, "and then I felt like there was a tiny... a tiny bit of warmth inside me, like a little spark." He avoided the concrete description of "spark" and used the vaguer "warmth" and "little spark."
"And then?" Hermione held her breath.
"Then, I tried to imagine guiding it to my fingertip," Lynn extended his right index finger. "Just now, while reading here, I tried again..." He paused deliberately to build suspense.
Hermione's eyes went wide, fixed on his fingertip.
Lynn took a deep breath, mobilized the spark inside him, which had recovered a bit, and carefully, extremely slowly, guided out a thread of warmth several times fainter than when he'd tried the Star Book, gathering it at his fingertip. This time, he didn't touch anything, just let the energy "stir" faintly under the skin of his fingertip.
One second... two seconds...
Under Hermione's tense gaze, the tip of Lynn's index finger flickered—extremely faintly, almost like an illusion!
The light was as weak as the most insignificant firefly on a summer night, gone in a flash, even dimmer than the daylight coming through the window. If not for staring intently, it would have been nearly impossible to notice!
"Ah!" Hermione let out a short, stifled gasp, her small hand flying to cover her mouth, her big eyes filled with disbelief and ecstasy! "I saw it! Lynn! I saw it! Your fingertip! Just now... it lit up! Very, very small, like... like the first spark when you strike a match!" Her voice trembled with excitement, her little face flushed red.
Lynn "timely" showed surprise and a hint of "confusion": "Really? You saw it too? I thought I was just seeing things from staring at the book too long..." He withdrew his finger, and the faint warmth dissipated.
"It's true! I swear!" Hermione was so excited she nearly jumped up. She grabbed Lynn's wrist before he could pull it back, her small finger eagerly poking the spot where his fingertip had glowed. "Right here! That's where it lit up! Lynn! This... could this be...?" She didn't say the word, but her eyes made it crystal clear—this was the manifestation of that "power" from the book!
Lynn felt Hermione's warm, firm little hand on his wrist, saw the overwhelming excitement and admiration blooming in her eyes because of him, and an indescribable satisfaction and warmth filled his heart. Sharing secrets, especially such magical ones, brought a closeness far beyond the ordinary. He gently turned his hand and lightly held hers (her wrist was very slender), smiled, and nodded, his eyes carrying encouragement and a hint of mystery: "Maybe... this is a little hint from that 'key'? It tells us we're on the right track."
"Mm! Definitely!" Hermione nodded vigorously, her brown curls bouncing with the motion, completely immersed in the thrill of the discovery and sharing a secret with Lynn, even forgetting to let go of his wrist. "It's amazing! Lynn! You're incredible! I'm going to work even harder on 'feeling' and 'guiding' when I get back!" She seemed injected with endless motivation.
"Let's work together." Lynn's smile was gentle and sincere, and the faint lingering warmth at his fingertip seemed to transfer to Hermione's wrist, still lightly held in his hand. In that small corner, two hearts exploring the unknown were tightly connected by a "little spark," filled with pure joy and sweet understanding.
But this beautiful atmosphere didn't last long.
"Lynn Li!" A cold, stern, clearly displeased voice pierced the warmth of the corner like an icicle. Mrs. Smith, the orphanage matron, had somehow appeared not far from their seats. She wore her eternal dark gray suit, her hair perfectly neat, her face expressionless, only her eyes behind her glasses sharply sweeping over Lynn, then landing on Hermione, and... their still-clasped wrists.
Lynn's heart sank. He almost reflexively let go of Hermione's wrist. Hermione also jumped, pulling her hand back like a startled rabbit, the excitement on her face instantly replaced by tension.
"Mrs. Smith." Lynn stood up, trying to keep his voice calm.
"I recall I said free time isn't for you to spend all day in the library, let alone here..." Mrs. Smith's gaze swept over Hermione again, with scrutiny and undisguised coldness, "...wasting time with irrelevant people. The orphanage has its rules, Mr. Lynn. Have you cleaned your room? Have you written next week's community service plan?"
Her tone was icy, each word lashing down like a whip. Hermione nervously twisted the hem of her clothes, her face pale, sensing the matron's harshness toward Lynn and her own... unwelcome presence.
"I... I'll go do that right now, Mrs. Smith." Lynn lowered his eyelids, hiding the coldness in his eyes. He couldn't start a conflict here, especially in front of Hermione.
"Now. Immediately." Mrs. Smith commanded, leaving no room for negotiation. She glanced at Hermione again, a look that seemed to say: Stay away from him.
Lynn took a deep breath, turned to Hermione, forced a reassuring smile, and whispered, "Sorry, Hermione, I have to go. We'll... continue tomorrow?"
Hermione looked at Lynn, then at Mrs. Smith's icy face, her big eyes full of worry and reluctance, but she nodded understandingly. "Mm... see you tomorrow, Lynn. You... be careful." She added softly.
Lynn felt a warmth in his heart. He nodded, no longer looking at Mrs. Smith, picked up his simple cloth bag (which held only a few ordinary books), and quickly left the library. He could feel Mrs. Smith's icy stare behind him, as well as Hermione's worried gaze.
As he walked out of the library, the cold evening wind of London blew in his face. The secret of the Starry Book in the attic, the successful guidance of the tiny "spark" at his fingertips, the sweetness of Hermione's excited and admiring eyes... all were instantly diluted by the cold reality brought by Mrs. Smith.
The orphanage was no place to stay long. The Hogwarts acceptance letter had become his only, and urgent, hope. He needed power, needed to master the secrets of the Starry Book as quickly as possible, and needed a place where he and Hermione could freely explore magic, far from such icy gazes.
He looked up at the gray sky and clenched his fist. The faint warmth of that current still seemed to linger at his fingertips, along with the warmth of Hermione's wrist. To protect this budding bond and secret, he had to grow stronger faster! The next time they met in the library, he hoped to bring Hermione more than just a faint "spark."
