That was what Adventurers called it. Many mortals believed Dragon Crystals were dug out of a Dragon's brain, but that was only a rumor. A Dragon's body was made of flesh and blood like any other creature's. It contained many priceless materials, but nothing beyond the bounds of biology. A Dragon Crystal held tremendous power, yet that power came not from a Dragon's body, but from its immensely powerful soul.

There was only one way for a Dragon Crystal to form!

At the instant a Dragon died, a spell had to draw out its soul and reshape it into a Legendary Soul Gem.

A Dragon Crystal was a Soul Gem.

It was simply the rarest and most powerful kind.

There were many ways to extract Soul Power, and Soran happened to possess one while in Fire Demon form. A Dragon's Soul Power dissipated quickly, so it had to be extracted at the moment of death. In his current state, Soran could use Charm Monster. Even without a gem, he could reshape the Magma Dragon's soul into a Legendary Dragon Crystal. Such a crystal held immense power and was valuable even to Deities.

But.

Extracting its Soul Power meant forfeiting most of the strength he could have gained from the enemy. He could no longer rely on the Magma Dragon's power to strengthen himself.

The one consolation was that a Dragon Crystal, being a kind of Soul Gem, could be absorbed later. In other words, he could store the Soul Power. Absorbing it afterward might reduce the benefits slightly, but most of the power would remain.
