Soren looked at the two witches and said gravely, "Take everything we need. I'll scout the Wizard Tower's third floor. If anything happens, I'll raise the alarm."
Goria nodded. "All right."
With that, Soren slipped into the darkness and climbed the stairs toward the Wizard Tower's third floor. Its exterior gave no clue how many floors lay inside; its height had no direct relation to the space within. If this Wizard Tower had been built as the core of a Floating City, it might have far more floors than other towers. It would need plenty of room for other things.
A fairly complex spell trap.
It lay at a turn in the stairs. Soren wisely left it alone, slipping past it and onto the third floor.
He sensed something keeping watch.
The moment he entered the Wizard Tower's third floor, surprise flashed in his eyes!
Rows of golem puppets stood before him—roughly three hundred in all. The first five rows held more than a hundred clay golems, followed by seventy or eighty stone golems, twenty or thirty iron golems, and finally five or six adamantite golems. At the far end of the hall stood two inactive Magical Energy Power Devices, one silver-white and the other dark gold. Above them, near the center of the third floor's ceiling, hung a strange humanoid figure made of metal.
It was probably the Tower Spirit.
This Tower Spirit was unlike the others. Its form lay somewhere between human and semi-humanoid, with energy conduits running from the ceiling into its body and a faint glow flickering around it. It appeared to be asleep, and it carried weapons. That set it apart from every Tower Spirit Soren had seen. It might be a combat-type Tower Spirit, not an intelligent one meant to help
