The seasons were slowly turning from autumn to winter.
In some places, temperatures were already nearing freezing, though the south remained relatively warm. Lane glanced at a vagrant curled up against a wall. His thin hemp clothes left his face tinged blue. Lane did not spare him much sympathy. On the road to the South Coast, he had seen too many displaced people. There were fewer refugees in the prosperous south, where they could go to Port Nyanzaru and earn food through work.
Lane quickened his pace. With the cold winter approaching, the Half-Elves of Falling Leaf City would be even worse off than these people.
When he had set out for Port Nyanzaru to seek an audience with His Excellency, people in Falling Leaf City were already dying of hunger and cold. Once winter arrived, it would only get worse.
"Though I didn't get to meet His Excellency..."
Thinking of what he had gained from the trip, Lane felt warmth surge through him. "At least I brought back good news. Once I'm home, we can start organizing the migration."
Meeting Soren was no easy matter. As the ruler of the three seas and the Protector of Half-Elves, he had too many important matters demanding his attention.
But Lane had gotten the answer he wanted. His Excellency was willing to take in these Half-Elves. They would have to reach the coast on their own, where Warships would bring them to Port Nyanzaru. They would be settled in newly built towns nearby. They certainly would not receive the same treatment as the first Half-Elves to migrate, but for Lane, it was enough that his people would no longer die of hunger and cold.
Half-Elves had inherited humanity's diligence. They would build prosperity with their own hands.
