The aura of death grew thicker.

The underground portion of the Death God Ruin was still fairly intact. It seemed that its lower levels had been set aside for other purposes from the very beginning. Most great temples were built this way, and Soren's half-elf temple had much the same layout. The temple aboveground was only the tip of the iceberg; beneath it lay three larger levels, each serving several purposes. There were torture chambers, holding cells, prayer rooms, solitary confinement cells, and so on. Most high-ranking spies sent by other factions to sabotage Port Nyanzaru never passed through the security office. Instead, they were taken directly to the temple's basement and handed over to the Night Walkers for interrogation.

An elite order of rogues within the Half-Elf Church, it currently had only sixteen members. Every one of them was a high-ranking elite with the potential to advance to legendary status.

They were all fanatical believers blessed by Soren.

Every deity's church had its own elite fighting force. The God of Suffering had the Broken Ones monk order, the God of Mages had the Arcanist Council, and the Lady of Night had the Black Moon Monk Order. The Goddess of Magic controlled organizations such as the Order of the Mystra's Fire, the Star Hunter Society, and the Sons of Star Feathers. Nearly every deity's church had such a force. Soren's foundations as a deity were not particularly deep yet, so he had only established a small contingent of Night Walkers.

After he passed through a side corridor, the space ahead suddenly opened up. Nearby were iron gates set into excavated openings, apparently repaired recently.

Soren saw some strange creatures.

They did not look like surface creatures, but rather like the earth elementals
