Jack greeted his elder sister early that morning, then packed his things and prepared to report to the barracks. He was now a mid-tier officer in Port Nyanzaru, having risen through the ranks far faster than his peers. Part of the reason, of course, was that he had considerable ability to begin with. The other reason, however, was his little nephew. The boy, only a year and a half old, had actually been accepted as a disciple by one of Port Nyanzaru's archbishops. He was almost certain to occupy one of the twelve seats within the Half-Elf Church in the future.
Beneath the High Priest, the Half-Elf Church had twelve seats in total, divided among the Central Hub, the Adjudication Office, and the College of Bishops.
Jack's nephew was practically guaranteed to become one of its future archbishops!
These days, his little nephew spent most of his time in the temple, being bathed in the radiance of Lord Soren. The Archbishop held a special prayer ceremony for him every day. He spent Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays in the temple, while on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, his sister cared for him at home. His nephew appeared at almost every major Sunday prayer service, even if only to make a token appearance. Many people throughout Port Nyanzaru already knew that he was one of the Archbishop's successors. The little fellow was remarkably precocious. Sometimes, meeting his gaze made Jack inexplicably uneasy.
Especially when the boy looked at Jack and his sister, Jack always felt a little guilty.
His sister had recently been urging him to find a girl and get
