He was an immensely powerful pirate leader, the founder of Baldur's Gate, and a great navigator.
When Soren first began his rise, many people thought he would become another Beldan. Even when Soren planned to build Port Nyanzaru, many were ready to stand back and watch him make a fool of himself. Back in the era when Beldan was active, he had led the most powerful pirate force of his time and built Baldur's Gate, appointing four dukes to govern it before he left. In a sense, everything Soren did at the beginning was very similar to what Beldan had done.
Even more than that!
After Beldan disappeared, their experiences still shared quite a few similarities.
For instance, rumors claimed that Beldan had mysteriously vanished or died at the hands of lycanthropes. In truth, however, he had quietly encroached on the realm of the deities, acquiring the [Pirates] portfolio through his own formidable strength. But his talents were ultimately those of a mortal. Unlike Soren, Beldan had not ascended directly to godhood. Instead, he had endured many twists and turns, even falling into the realm of dark creatures for a time because of a certain curse. Yet after being missing for several centuries, he had finally advanced from a demigod to the God of Pirates with [Quasi-Divinity].
Records from the Arcane Empire period mentioned that Beldan had been active for a time, and most of his followers had been pirates.
