George arrived at the barracks early that morning to report for duty. A selection had been held there the day before, as Port Nyanzaru's leaders needed three people to carry out an important mission. As one of the most talented officers currently serving, George had naturally fought hard for a place. He needed a chance to prove his strength.
Not long after George arrived at the barracks, the other two appeared.
One was a cold-faced drow warrior, and the other was a fierce-looking native. Both had also been selected for the mission. George knew the native, whose name was Haruk. He was one of the natives who had recently risen to prominence, originally a warrior responsible for his clan's sacrificial rites. After being captured by Port Nyanzaru and enslaved, he had earned his freedom through hard work and entered the city's third-class citizen stratum. He had then earned military merit during the demon invasion, leaping several ranks at once to become an Honorary Citizen of Port Nyanzaru.
Haruk could be called an idol to many natives, having risen straight from slavery into Port Nyanzaru's newly privileged class.
Only Port Nyanzaru's order could offer these ignorant natives such an opportunity.
"Is everyone here?"
Standing directly ahead and looking down at the three of them was a grim-faced man. He had dark skin and a sharp gleam in his eyes. The crest on his chest identified him as a member of the Church's Adjudication Office.
The grim-faced man looked over the three of them, then said solemnly, "This mission is an important test."
"My Lord personally ordered us to select suitable candidates."
"If you're all ready, come with me now."
Naturally, all three nodded.
There was little fighting around Port Nyanzaru at present, and they had long been waiting
