Background / History

Lu Yan was originally a mortal shop assistant at Steward Chu’s Spirit Talisman Shop. After being taken from the mortal city by Chu, his absence was mapped in the Urban Version as an alleged business trip to Myanmar; only Lu Yan understood that Chu had selected him for malicious reasons 5.

Following a version update, Lu Yan gambled that Steward Chu would lose his cultivation. He confronted and killed him inside an underground organ-trading factory with a Small Golden Light Talisman and his fists, then burned the body with a Spirit Fire Talisman to erase evidence 3 4. From Chu’s belongings, he acquired Spirit Stones, talismans, a Storage Bag, the Red Lotus Karma Fire Sutra, demonic artifact records, and an initial Soul Banner 4.

He spent three days cross-referencing and correcting flaws in the Red Lotus Karma Fire Sutra with Buddhist and Daoist material available in the Urban Version before beginning formal cultivation. The threat of the demonic cultivator behind Steward Chu became his immediate reason to pursue strength 5 6.

Appearance

Cultivation transformed Lu Yan from a seemingly thin young man into someone whose body and bearing visibly exceeded ordinary humans. His frame grew several centimeters, his strength became disproportionate to his build, and his skin was described as exceptionally smooth 6.

  • Often wears plain or dark long robes despite moving between radically different world versions.
  • Possesses a detached, ethereal aura that unsettles ordinary people and lower-level cultivators 6 72 126.
  • At Foundation Establishment, his body became transparent “like glass,” with a physical constitution comparable to an early Foundation Establishment body cultivator 162.
  • After entering the Taiyi Grotto-heaven, his movements carried an increasingly pronounced immortal and Dao-like bearing 224.

Personality

Lu Yan is calculating, patient, and highly risk-conscious. He prepares for version changes, conceals the true extent of his strength, and usually treats information as a weapon: he corrected a potentially flawed cultivation scripture before practicing it, baited hostile cultivators into an advantageous battlefield, and used rival factions’ ambitions against them 5 37 49.

He is pragmatic to the point of ruthlessness when threatened. Lu Yan kills enemies who endanger his secrets, manipulates Li Hao through the fabricated authority of Hell, and openly uses fear, incentives, and uncertainty to keep subordinates compliant rather than expecting loyalty 44 151 153.

Despite this, he values useful loyalty and repays meaningful assistance. He gave the Warrior Main Soul a chance to pursue advancement, aided Ji Xingyao’s recovery at considerable personal expense, and taught Mu Chunqiu from the Heavenly Dao Treatise despite the danger of attracting Heavenly Dao interference 138 212 222.

Abilities & Skills

Red Lotus Karma Fire Sutra

Lu Yan’s principal cultivation method is the corrected Red Lotus Karma Fire Sutra, acquired from Steward Chu’s Storage Bag.

  • Actively absorbs spiritual energy and refines it into Mana more efficiently than instinct-driven Transcendent Zombies 22.
  • Can draw on Spirit Stones and high-density spirit-energy environments to accelerate cultivation 6 72.
  • Initially required extensive research because the original text contained dangerous errors 5.
  • Provides the foundation for his spiritual-energy cultivation across the Urban, Apocalypse, Cyber, and Xianxia Versions.

Profound Yellow Merit Fire

Lu Yan possesses vast Heavenly Dao Merit and has cultivated it into a nascent Merit Divine Power.

  • Particularly effective against demonic souls, curses, karma techniques, and soul-based secret arts 44 95.
  • Can suppress unruly Fierce Ghosts within the Soul Banner 40.
  • Protected him when the Xianxia Heavenly Dao’s malice descended during his lecture to Mu Chunqiu 222.
  • Is less effective against ordinary extraordinary beings with overwhelming physical regeneration or resistance 95.

Soul Banner and Hell Army

Lu Yan’s greatest long-term combat resource is his Soul Banner, initially a low-grade demonic artifact. Through repeated refinement, it grew into the Hundred Soul Banner and later became associated with the Human Emperor Banner and Hell’s military system 4 28 205.

  • Refines wandering souls, vengeful souls, Fierce Ghosts, and powerful enemies into military assets.
  • Commands Main Souls, including the Warrior, Blood Beard, and Giant Spirit 20 28 43.
  • Has fielded hundreds of Fierce Ghosts hidden behind the apparent limits of a Hundred Soul Banner 43.
  • Leads Yin Soldiers, Ghost Generals, Ghost Gods, and large-scale arrays such as the Nine Nether Yin Wind Array 169 198.
  • By the Great Collapse Version, his army included six thousand Foundation Establishment Yin Soldiers and six hundred peak Foundation Establishment Ghost Generals 234.
  • His Yin Soldiers and Ghost Generals later transformed into Heroic Spirits after slaughtering zombies while bearing Heavenly Dao Merit and Human Emperor aura 205.

Ghost Gods

Lu Yan refines exceptional souls into Ghost Gods with specialized functions.

  • Guardian God — calculates and blocks spells, Divine Powers, and soul curses within its computational capacity 169.
  • Giant Spirit God — commands Yin Soldiers and supports large-scale arrays 169 173.
  • Yin Li God — uses He Hua Zizai Tian to deceive living beings’ cognition, making Lu Yan’s presence seem subconsciously reasonable until he acts 198.
  • Ghost Gods were limited by Lu Yan’s realm but had reached Late Golden Core by the Great Collapse Version 234.

Heavenly Dao and Version Authority

Lu Yan’s defining advantage is the Unchanging One characteristic, expressed to him through the Version Update Interface.

  • Can move between world versions and exploit partial correspondences between them 5 268.
  • Understood that Version Change Value could influence a world’s evolution and potentially allow “replacing Heaven with man” 36.
  • Temporarily replaced the Spiritual Qi Heavenly Dao, gaining direct insight into Great Dao rules and performing miracles through the Emperor Lord Phantom 161.
  • Was identified as the “Only One in All Worlds,” able to remain unchanged across the shifting rules of multiple versions 229.
  • Later acquired the authority of Advance Update, allowing him to force an early version update under extreme circumstances 309.

Spells, True Laws, and Divine Powers

Lu Yan’s combat ability extends far beyond his Banner due to Heavenly Dao comprehension, True Law accumulation, and his Supreme Divine Power Seed.

  • Fully comprehended first- and second-tier spells below Divine Power level after his brief Heavenly Dao status 162.
  • Uses the Four Symbols Gate to suppress techniques rooted in earth, water, wind, and fire 210.
  • Wields the Xuan Pin Gate’s suppressive principle against enemy True Intents 173.
  • Uses Xuan Tong True Meaning and the No Light Same Dust Method to conceal his existence and evade stronger pursuers 174.
  • Practiced seventeen True Laws that appeared simultaneously on the Heaven and Earth True Law Ranking, occupying seventeen of its top hundred positions 167.
  • His Supreme Divine Power Seed can elevate even basic techniques to Heavenly Astral Divine Power level 224 226.
  • Applied this blessing to techniques such as the Golden Light Technique, Yin Wind Curse, Great Evil Induction Technique, and Yin Talisman Three Killings 226 227.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Soul Banner / Hundred Soul Banner / Human Emperor Banner — Lu Yan’s primary artifact for refining and commanding souls, later associated with Hell’s army and Human Emperor authority 4 28 205.
  • Jade Sword — A flying sword recovered from Steward Chu’s Storage Bag; Lu Yan refined it after deciding it was too closely tied to the Red Lotus Demonic Sect to sell safely 4 36.
  • Storage Bags — Lu Yan acquired multiple Storage Bags containing cultivation resources and demonic-sect materials; he later replaced his conspicuous Golden Silk Storage Bag with a low-grade one to avoid attention 4 37.
  • Scripture Transmission Token — Given by Ji Xingyao, allowing him to enter the Azure Parasol Sect and access the first three floors of its Scripture Pavilion 58 59.
  • Spirit Marrow Ore — A rare resource recovered from Cheng Yu’s possessions; Lu Yan later used it to establish a First Tier Low-Grade Artificial Spirit Vein at Bei Mang Mountain 46 138.
  • Returning Light Mirror — A former investigative artifact destroyed when Lu Yan met the gaze of a mysterious old man; its destruction helped expose the danger surrounding the Xuan Pin Gate’s conceptual pollution 217 230.

Relationships

  • Ji Xingyao — Azure Parasol Sect Direct Disciple and former Jade Polishing Fairy. Lu Yan initially approached her cautiously as an admirer, later received her Scripture Transmission Token, and helped repair her damaged foundation with Sun Stones; their relationship develops into mutual respect and assistance 14 58 212 214.
  • He Dongsheng — Former market swindler who became a Taiyi Sect Main Lineage successor through extraordinary fortune. He is a recurring ally, introduced Lu Yan to Mu Chunqiu, and supported Lu Yan’s entry into the Taiyi Sect 39 130 218 220.
  • Mu Chunqiu — Taiyi Sect Nascent Soul True Lord and master of the Four Seasons Lineage. Lu Yan helped him understand the Longevity Immortal Art and path toward Immortality; Mu Chunqiu repaid him with resources and support for the Direct Disciple Assembly 220 222 224.
  • Li Hao — Head of the White Furnace Li Family. Lu Yan manipulated him into serving Hell’s interests during the Spiritual Energy Recovery and used him as a mortal-world proxy 150 151 178.
  • Warrior Main Soul — Lu Yan’s first Main Soul and a loyal close-combat guardian. It chose to follow him into an uncertain opportunity at Bei Mang Mountain rather than remain behind to await safer advancement 20 138.
  • Su Yan — Azure Parasol Sect Direct Disciple and Urban Version influencer. Their relationship began as mutual opportunism; Su Yan received cultivation resources from Lu Yan and later defended him during the Azure Parasol Sect confrontation 127 209 210.
  • Quentin — Cyber Version Compiler who became Lu Yan’s assistant after Lu Yan demonstrated overwhelming power and obtained an identity through him 67 72.
  • Grandma Xu — Lu Yan’s elderly neighbor in the Urban Version. She believed rumors that he had gone to Myanmar to make his fortune, while Lu Yan tried to maintain a low profile 5.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Steward Chu and the Beginning of Cultivation

Lu Yan’s story begins with his revenge against Steward Chu, whose shop and factory concealed organ trafficking. After killing Chu, Lu Yan claimed the resources that enabled his first steps into cultivation, began refining the Soul Banner, and cultivated the corrected Red Lotus Karma Fire Sutra in secret 3 4 5.

Soul Banner Growth and the Apocalypse Version

Lu Yan used the Apocalypse Version’s high spiritual-energy density to strengthen himself and his Banner. He refined wandering souls, created Main Souls, developed the Warrior’s Ghost Armor Art, and eventually defeated Blood Beard to raise the Hundred Soul Banner to Top Grade Magic Tool quality 20 24 28.

Red Lotus Demonic Sect Conflict

After attracting attention through Steward Chu’s Storage Bag, Lu Yan eliminated hostile cultivators, uncovered the Red Lotus Demonic Sect’s interest in the artifact, captured Cheng Yu, and resolved to confront both the Mo Family and the sect 37 39 44 46.

Spiritual Energy Recovery and Hell’s Prestige

Lu Yan used the Spirit Marrow Ore to create an artificial spirit vein, helped trigger the Spiritual Energy Recovery trend, and elevated his Version Change Value to 50% 138 146. He then established the public fiction of Hell’s authority, coerced Li Hao into becoming a proxy, and manipulated numerous forces into addressing the Bei Mang Forbidden Ground crisis 150 153 154.

Demon Version and True Law Pursuit

After seventeen of Lu Yan’s True Laws appeared on the Heaven and Earth True Law Ranking, he became the target of desperate human and demonic factions. Taiyi Sect and the Path Toward Immortality

Lu Yan entered the Azure Parasol Sect to aid Ji Xingyao, then leveraged his connection with Mu Chunqiu to secure a place in the Taiyi Sect. Great Collapse and the Divine Court

Within the Great Collapse Version, Lu Yan expanded Hell into a large-scale military and political force, fought for Version Fragments, and used false bodies, Ghost Gods, and the Human Emperor Banner to oppose version factions 234 235 245 251. He later pursued the creation of an All Heavens Divine Court as a means to preserve order across worlds and rival beings who possess the “Only One in This World” characteristic 263 265.

Hell’s Expanding Transcendent System

In the Mysterious and Cyber Versions, Lu Yan was recognized as a Saint of the Human Realm, began building influence through a Guild and an indirect Church, and expanded Hell’s bureaucratic hierarchy 272 273 283. The resulting system created millions of Wandering Souls, thousands of Karma Judges, hundreds of Reincarnation Registrars, and multiple Acting Kings of Hell—power that drove Lu Yan to peak Transformation God 338.
