Background

At fifteen, Chen An was regarded by his school and clan elders as an unremarkable youth with mediocre prospects, often compared unfavorably to his cousin Chen Yuan. His classmate Shen Yun was one of the few people who consistently treated him kindly, teaching him to read and write and eventually bringing him to the White Lotus Society. 410

The society’s Mysterious Daoist immediately recognized something unusual in him: Chen An could clearly perceive the immortal landscape concealed in a Mutton Fat Jade Plaque. He was accepted as a personal disciple without the usual trials, received the Daoist name Ping An, and was instructed to cultivate the White Lotus Contemplation Scripture. 410 412
