Background / History

Yan Yu began as Li Yuan's wife in Little Ink Village. Their relationship was affectionate from the beginning, and she remained his most constant domestic partner as he rose from a hunter into a powerful martial artist 1 14 19. Though she initially disguised her petite figure with padding and makeup to appear gray and heavyset, she was practical, informed, and actively involved in village and household affairs 10 94.

She wished to cultivate so that she could keep pace with Li Yuan, but her earlier attempt at the Willow Return Technique did not succeed. Rather than pursue combat for its own sake, she chose to maintain the home and family Li Yuan sought to protect 75 103 112. She later gave birth to their daughter, Xiao Sheng, whose gestational exposure to Feng Er's Yin energy caused her to become Jade Bone 100 114 116.

While attempting to save Xiao Sheng within a dream, Yan Yu repeatedly triggered the Peddler's killing rule. Feng Er's rule compelled it to protect her, causing the two evil ghosts and Yan Yu to become trapped together when the dream-house collapsed. The Peddler and Feng Er fused into her, transforming her into the center of a Ghost Domain 115.

Although she retained her memories, affection, and personality, Yan Yu could no longer freely return to the human world. Her survival depended on the Yin Qi beneath the Ghost Domain, and she described herself as possibly no longer wholly human, but an aggregate produced by the fusion of evil ghosts 125 126. She established and managed a general store on Ghost Street, where the Peddler and Feng Er handed their earnings to her 125.

As her Ghost Domain grew, Yan Yu became known publicly as Lord Yan Niangniang. Her Judge Division occupied territory, operated temples, and administered rewards and punishments through white-robed “Rewarding Good” and black-robed “Punishing Evil” agents 217. She later took control of Asking Sword Palace through Zhong Kui, a hidden Black Lotus Sect vice leader whom her side could evaluate for truthfulness and past conduct 217.

After fusing with Gu Xuan and absorbing the Four Symbols, Yan Yu's authority expanded beyond the Ghost Domain into the Netherworld itself. As Earth Mother Yuan Jun, she governed Yin Qi, judged souls, oversaw reincarnation, and began studying the creation of stronger lifeforms through the alteration of body and soul 328 329 331. She eventually split off a fragment of her divine soul to reincarnate and conduct her research in the human world directly 332 334.

Yan Yu's appearance changes with her ghostly evolution, but she consistently retains a petite, delicate build and a poised, feminine bearing. Her increasingly refined appearance contrasts with the deathly Yin Qi and ghostly authority surrounding her.

Yan Yu is deeply devoted to Li Yuan and their family. She consistently prioritizes Xiao Sheng's safety and Li Yuan's wellbeing, even when her own transformation leaves her unable to share an ordinary human life with them 112 114 205. Her care is practical: she ensures Li Yuan has hot food available when he isolates himself in cultivation and arranges household matters without demanding explanations for his dangerous journeys 111.

She is gentle and playful with those close to her, retaining the teasing manner and warmth of her human life even after becoming a ghostly being 125 332. At the same time, she is resolute when confronting evil. She calmly exposes Xu Qi's crimes, sees through attempted infiltration, and reacts with anger to the cruelty used to create Jade Bone children 125 191 211.

Her growing divinity gradually makes her demeanor colder and more detached, but Li Yuan's presence helps preserve her humanity. Even as a ruler of the Netherworld, she continues to show delight, concern, and attachment toward her husband and children 205 222 329.
