Entering Foundation Establishment

A cultivator normally attempts Foundation Establishment after reaching the peak of Qi Refining Layer 9. The breakthrough transforms True Qi into True Essence and subjects the cultivator to three tribulations: the True Essence Tribulation, Physical Body Tribulation, and Divine Sense Tribulation. 39 40 41

• True Essence Tribulation — The cultivator compresses nine True Qi vortices into True Essence. Failure can cause the Dantian to explode, resulting in immediate death; the Great Elder states that roughly ninety percent fail at this step. 41
• Physical Body Tribulation — Newly condensed True Essence repeatedly tears apart the Dantian and meridians, which must be continuously repaired through cultivation. 41
• Divine Sense Tribulation — The soul undergoes a minor transformation. Once completed, the cultivation method can operate automatically and continuously convert ambient Spiritual Energy into True Essence. 41

Ancient Foundation Establishment cultivation was divided by the perfection of the three fundamentals:
