Background / History
Qian Changchun was saved from a life-threatening situation by an unidentified monk, who taught him cultivation techniques before disappearing. Kuang Jing was taught by the same figure; the techniques passed to the two men share an underlying intent despite developing in different directions 145 240.
As the master of Fuhu Martial Arts School, Qian became known as the Crouching Mountain Tiger. Though he outwardly appeared to be an idle old man, experienced martial artists regarded him with awe, and he was recognized as a Fourth Level expert 285 314.
Behind his schoolmaster persona, Qian was the mastermind of the Thirty-Six Fiends of Pingfeng and later led the Pingfeng Mountain Righteous Army. His forces killed County Lieutenant Qin Yong, captured Blackwater City, and expanded with neighboring righteous armies before betrayal and internal conflict shattered their coalition. Qian disappeared after government forces retook the city 165 300.
Appearance
Qian is an elderly man with half-white hair and seemingly cloudy eyes. He often projects a leisurely, unremarkable image—lounging in a rocking chair, eating fruit, or walking with his hands behind his back—until his martial aura emerges.
- Often seen in a rocking chair beneath an old locust tree.
- Has sharp, tiger-like eyes beneath his relaxed exterior.
- Usually appears slightly hunched, but straightens sharply when displaying authority or martial intent.
- Prefers plums and is notably dissatisfied when they are out of season 211 314.
Personality
Qian is casual, sardonic, and often deliberately lazy in manner, but he is exceptionally perceptive. He quickly recognizes martial talent, detects killing intent through a fighter's bearing, and judges whether a disciple truly understands the spirit of Fuhu Fist rather than merely its forms 272 299.
His instruction is severe and practical. Qian believes martial arts are killing techniques, demands courage from his disciples, and uses painful physical conditioning to force progress. He is nevertheless deeply invested in talented students, especially Chen Duan, whom he repeatedly supports with medicine, sparring, instruction, and access to Fuhu's complete inheritance 248 289.
Qian is also cautious about obsession. Although impressed by Chen's pursuit of power, he warns him that constant overtraining can lead to qi deviation or a twisted temperament 207.
