Demon Kings are Hell's highest-ranking demonic rulers. They compete for territory, souls, Authority, and ultimately the position of Lord of Hell; Hell Will actively encourages this conflict when it is no longer suppressed by Lucifer 961 1456.

Their power is not standardized. Each Demon King's abilities reflect individual nature, bloodline, artifacts, or Rules: Scarab Demon King stores magic power in treasure, while Zero Demon King controls the Fate Rule 1450 3021.

Demon Kings are widely characterized by opportunism rather than honor. They employ ambushes, betray allies, and exploit contracts whenever advantageous 1455 3015.

Appearance

Demon Kings have no fixed appearance. Their forms range from humanlike to colossal or overtly monstrous; Scarab Demon King can appear human, while Trigon is enormous and the Golden Demon King radiates golden light 1449 1953.

Demon King Authority

Becoming a Demon King grants Authority and a dramatic increase in power. Hellboy's ascension through Marduk's Hell Cornerstone caused Demon King Authority to fuse with him and gave him the strength to tear apart earth and destroy mountains 231.

• Most Authorities belonging to Hell return to Hell when their holder dies.
• Authorities acquired separately can remain behind as spoils; Marduk's Power Authority remained after his death and granted berserk power 231.
• Demon King Authority can be tied to a specific Hell and its cornerstone, which recognizes a new ruler 231.

Rule, Bloodline, and Innate Powers

A Demon King may wield a unique Rule, bloodline ability, or innate magic rather than a shared set of techniques.

• Fate Rule — Zero Demon King's power allows him to perceive large-scale disturbances involving other Demon Kings 3021.
• Bloodline fusion — Bloodline Demon King can integrate other creatures' bloodlines and use their abilities, though those bloodlines can revolt if destabilized 2983.
• Treasure magic — Scarab Demon King stores magic power in treasures and can release it in battle 1450.
• Demonic power — Demon King power is potent enough that ordinary items generally cannot withstand it 1450.

Subordinate Spaces

Some Demon Kings maintain private Subordinate Spaces, which function as fortified personal territories. Bloodline Demon King and Zero Demon King each use such spaces, with the latter filling his manor-like domain with concealed Magic Arrays 2983 3027.

History

Assaults on Earth

Demon Kings repeatedly sought to breach Earth's defenses. At Earth's Space Node, they gathered to attack Kamar-Taj's protective formation, only for Ancient One to dismiss their repeated threats based on prior defeats 223.

After Lucifer's departure from Hell, Hell Will began to boil and called on the six Flame Demon Kings of the Rock of Doom to replace him as Lord of Hell. The group planned to join a wider demonic assault on Earth and avenge Shabak's earlier defeat 961.

Struggle for Lord of Hell

Hell's Demon Kings entered open conflict as multiple factions sought the throne. Some prepared to fight independently, while weaker rulers sought the protection of a powerful “wise lord” rather than risk becoming cannon fodder 1456.

The competition became increasingly dangerous as Demon Kings formed temporary alliances, sacrificed portions of their flesh and blood for power, and attempted to summon stronger beings 1501 1502.

Andrew's Subjugation Campaign

Andrew systematically turned Demon Kings into subordinates through force, contracts, infiltration, and soul manipulation. He captured Scarab Demon King and transformed him into the Greed Demon King, then used him as an undercover agent 1451.

In the past timeline, Andrew arranged for the Blood Demon King to lure groups of three Demon Kings to a temple, intending to subdue Hell's rulers in batches 3015. After defeating Boasting Demon King, Tree Demon King, Flower Demon Queen, and Crimson Multi-winged Demon King, he offered them a choice between submission and death 3019 3020.

By the time Hell Will attempted to incite rebellion with a decree promising Lord of Hell status to anyone who killed Andrew, every available Demon King had already submitted to him 3078.
