The last he'd heard, the Lord was still on Greeny Island, taking part in King Louis's punitive campaign against Whitecliff. The fact that Little Bach, the old flywheel's green-tea ex-girlfriend, had traveled all the way to Transia was enough to show, indirectly, just how dire things had become at the Tower of Rings.

A handful of Twilight worshippers among them had caused trouble, forcing the Sun King to adopt a "secure the home front before repelling the invaders" strategy in the middle of this crisis.

Clearly, King Louis understood how disastrous it would be to have internal collaborators stirring up trouble while the border was at war with the Black Calamity gnolls.

However, the trusted short-man marshal Loren was still stationed in East Prussia, in full command of the border campaign. That meant the force taking part in the punitive campaign against Whitecliff was
