History
Garp pursued the Red-Haired Pirates into the East Sea after judging that they had revealed hostile intent. From his dog-headed warship, he personally hurled black cannonballs at Shanks' ship with enough force to break the sound barrier. 47 49
At Elegia, he fought Shanks, Benn Beckman, and Louis. Garp moved his ship away from the battlefield to protect its crew, used Geppo to engage Louis in the air, and broke Louis's flaming spears with his Iron Fist. He recognized Louis as a potential “legendary angel” and became alarmed by the youth's calculated malice toward the Navy. 51 52 53
Garp attempted to stop Louis from escaping, but Shanks and the Red-Haired Pirates intervened. Though Garp injured Shanks and remained determined to capture Louis, the pirates successfully withdrew. 55 56
After the battle, Garp reported that Louis possessed exceptional defense, speed, flames, healing, and strength, but that his Haki was not yet fully developed. This assessment led Marine Headquarters to consider using unusual Paramecia abilities as a countermeasure. 58 60
As Louis continued to grow, Garp regarded him as a major long-term threat to the Navy. Years later, he admitted that the earlier Paramecia-based countermeasure was no longer viable and that no individual could defeat Louis alone. 106 220
During the conflict involving the Archangel Pirates, Kaido, and the Big Mom Pirates, Garp fought alongside Kuzan. He defended Navy warships from Louis's flame-and-thunder spear attack, battled Kaido with Conqueror's Haki-infused strikes, and sustained grave injuries, including a fractured leg and a deformed fist. 223 225 232
In March of Sea Calendar 1514, Garp retired from frontline service and became chief instructor at Navy Headquarters' training camp. He later remained involved in Navy affairs and was severely injured during the attack on Navy Headquarters, falling into a coma. 236 296 307
The Five Elders later ordered that Garp be brought to Mary Geoise for treatment. Tsuru, Akainu, and Fujitora opposed the command, believing its stated medical purpose was a pretext and that Garp would reject any recovery method imposed by the World Government. 308
Despite lasting injuries to his legs and back, Garp continued to appear during the Navy's later crises. He rejected the Archangel Pirates' call for surrender and subsequently fought Yelena at Sabaody, where he was defeated. 325 345 346
Appearance
Garp is an aged, burly man repeatedly compared to a brown bear. In later appearances, his age is marked by a slight stoop and reduced physical condition. 47 325
- Wears a Navy Justice cloak while on duty. 201 325
- Has a massive, powerful build despite his age. 47 223
- Is described with graying or white hair in later years. 179 325
- Commands a distinctive dog-headed warship. 49 220
Personality
Garp is blunt, irreverent, and frequently casual even in serious settings. He naps in Sengoku's office, eats large quantities of donuts, picks his nose during discussions, and laughs at danger or provocation. 296 325 345
Beneath this carefree manner, he is deeply committed to protecting Navy personnel. He moved his ship away from Louis's attacks, intervened personally against threats to Navy fleets, and remained concerned for Kuzan when his subordinate was injured. 52 223 232
His attitude toward family is contradictory. Garp publicly insists that pirate relatives such as Luffy are “dead” to him, yet takes obvious pride in Luffy and Ace's exploits. 179 296 325
Abilities & Skills
Iron Fist
Garp's fighting style centers on overwhelming bare-handed strikes.
- Shattered Louis's descending flame spears with successive punches. 52
- Deflected Louis's spear and struck the Seven Star Sword with a blow powerful enough to create spreading shockwaves. 52
- Used Garp's Fist: Impact to disperse a massive flame-and-thunder spear attack before it struck Navy warships. 223
- Landed Conqueror's Haki-infused punches on Kaido despite facing Kaido's awakened strength. 225
Haki
Garp possesses extremely advanced Haki, especially Conqueror's Haki and Armament Haki.
- His Conqueror's Haki clashed with Louis's, generating black-red lightning and storm-level disruption across the sea. 53
- Coats his fists in Conqueror's Haki for high-impact attacks. 55 223
- Uses Armament Haki across his body to endure devastating strikes, including Kaido's attacks. 225
- His Haki and physical strength remained formidable even in old age, though later injuries significantly reduced his condition. 223 232 325
Geppo and Soru
Garp uses aerial and high-speed movement techniques in combat.
- Used Geppo to leap from the sea into aerial combat against Louis. 52
- Crossed hundreds of meters almost instantly while launching a Haki-infused surprise attack. 55
- Combined Geppo and Soru to intercept a falling island during the Flying Pirates' assault. 201
Tactical Assessment
Garp's experience allows him to evaluate unusual opponents quickly.
- Determined that Louis could initially be countered through a specialized Paramecia ability before Louis's Haki matured. 58 220
- Warned the Navy that Louis's growth would make him a major enemy of the organization. 106
- Recognized that Louis and Kaido were unusually dangerous because both were powerful in every major aspect of combat. 225
