Background
Mortarion was cast onto Barbarus, a death world saturated with poisonous gas, where he was adopted by its strongest Xenos warlord. He later fled that captivity and led the Death Guard in a campaign to reclaim the planet, driven by his hatred of Xenos oppression and the deaths of Barbarus’s human population 63 71.
The final assault brought him back to the mountain fortress of his adoptive father. Mortarion fought the warlord with his great scythe while Typhon, severely injured, created a brief opening with the Terrify psychic spell. Mortarion used that moment to decapitate his former father and end Barbarus’s Xenos rule 74.
After the battle, the Emperor healed Mortarion and the surviving Death Guard. Though initially hostile and wary, Mortarion accepted the Emperor as his father and joined the Imperium 74 75.
Appearance
Mortarion is a tall, thin Primarch whose silhouette is compared to that of an old farmer. He commonly appears in sickly green Power Armor, a respirator, and clothing steeped in Barbarus’s toxic atmosphere 71 111 186.
- Carries a large war scythe as his signature weapon 71 74.
- Keeps his face hidden behind a respirator; its airflow becomes noticeably heavy when he is angered or under strain 218.
- Maintains a laboratory-focused lifestyle and surrounds himself with toxic fumes, poisons, and biological experiments 111 130.
- His armor and shoulder pauldrons are hazardous enough that Sandman treats casual physical contact with him as a poisoning risk 91.
Personality
Mortarion is silent, harsh, and exceptionally stubborn. He refuses to yield to enemies, the Warp, or outside authority, framing his liberation of Barbarus as a personal rejection of enslavement and shame 71 91.
He is ruthless toward Xenos, daemons, and traitors alike. When confronting Warp corruption, his instinct is not negotiation but eradication: virus bombardment, flame weapons, orbital lances, and overwhelming firepower 186 187 188.
Despite his pride, Mortarion is loyal to his Legion. During Typhon’s betrayal, he refuses to abandon the Death Guard or flee alone, choosing to remain with the main fleet even as its retreat collapses 205. His pride eventually gives way to humility when Korax proves overwhelmingly stronger; Mortarion accepts his brother’s instruction rather than continue denying his own Warp essence 218.
Abilities & Skills
Toxicology and Pharmacology
Mortarion is regarded as the Imperium’s foremost apothecary and specializes in creating poisons tailored to the biology of specific enemies 146 287.
- Formulates corrosive and toxic munitions for Death Guard bolters, allowing poisons to spread and worsen over prolonged engagements 146.
- Produces highly toxic bombs for allied Legions, including a varied batch supplied to Sandman before the Raven Guard’s campaign 91.
- Developed a biological arsenal containing specialized counters for other Legions and anti-psionic threats 140.
- Uses his later authority over biological decay to formulate new bio-phages against Tyranid adaptation 286 287.
Purification Warfare
Mortarion treats Warp corruption as a military and biological contamination problem to be exterminated.
- Ordered virus-bomb purification of tainted worlds, deploying the Death-Spreader virus as an aerosol that dissolved spores, microbial life, and contaminated organic matter 188.
- Equipped Death Guard assault forces with virus bombs, Promethium flamers, and incinerator bombs during the Cangwu Star operation 186.
- Ordered extermination-level bombardment when a Warp barrier protected the corrupted core smelter, escalating from strike-cruiser lances to battleship lances and Nova Cannons 187.
- Attacked Nurgle’s Garden from range with unmanned warships, Nova Cannons, lances, viruses, radioactive agents, and overloaded reactors rather than accept a daemonic close-quarters battle 203 204.
Warp Essence and Rotting Life Authority
Mortarion’s latent Warp nature is tied to death, disease, decay, and the inevitability of endings, though he initially rejected these associations 210 218.
- Learns from Korax that accepting the underlying law of inevitability does not require embracing Nurgle’s corruption 218.
- Gains the capacity to draw power from his Warp essence after abandoning his resistance 218.
- Later holds Nurgle’s former authority in the field of biological viruses, greatly expanding his ability to create biological countermeasures 275 287.
Martial Prowess
Mortarion is a powerful close-combat Primarch who fights with a great scythe.
- Defeated and decapitated his Xenos adoptive father despite suffering severe wounds and facing superior enemy psionics 74.
- Personally leads Death Guard assaults against Nurgle daemons and Warp-corrupted cultists 187.
- Uses his scythe to destroy daemonic manifestations before ordering them burned to ash 187.
Equipment
- Great scythe — Mortarion’s primary close-combat weapon, used in his duel against his adoptive father and against Warp entities 71 74 187.
- Respirator and toxic Power Armor — Seals him against hostile environments and is associated with Barbarus’s poisonous atmosphere 111 186.
- Indomitus — Death Guard flagship from which Mortarion directs fleet operations 146 186.
- Green leather necklace — A gift from Sandman, intended as protection and a reminder of Sandman’s promise to aid Mortarion against his “father” 131.
Relationships
- The Emperor — Mortarion’s father and the ruler he initially distrusts, but ultimately accepts after the Emperor heals him and the Death Guard following Barbarus’s liberation 74.
- Korax — Brother, battlefield ally, and later teacher. Korax guides Mortarion toward accepting his Warp essence after demonstrating the gulf between their powers 74 153 218.
- Sandman — Close friend and frequent sparring partner in conversation. Sandman repeatedly warns Mortarion about Typhon, gives him a protective necklace, and later directs him to Korax for Warp-essence training 131 148 210.
- Typhon / Typhus — Mortarion’s former closest companion on Barbarus and Legion commander. Typhon aids in the killing of Mortarion’s adoptive father, then later betrays the Death Guard to Nurgle 74 205.
- Garo — Captain of the Seventh Grand Company; a loyal subordinate who reports battlefield conditions and helps preserve the Legion during Typhon’s betrayal 186 187 210.
- Voss — Veteran Death Guard officer entrusted with Legion affairs during Mortarion’s absences and with reporting the Legion’s losses 186 210.
- Nurgle — Mortarion’s primary Chaos adversary, who seeks to claim him and the Death Guard as servants 188 205.
- Aisha — Ally during the later campaign in Nurgle’s Garden, where she and Korax help Mortarion challenge Nurgle 231.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Liberation of Barbarus
Mortarion leads the Death Guard’s final campaign against the Xenos rulers of Barbarus. He takes the southwest continent, advances through poison-choked mountains, and kills his adoptive father in the Sky-Piercing Mountains 71 74.
Great Crusade and the Rak'Gol War
As commander of the Death Guard, Mortarion cooperates with Korax and other Primarchs during the Rak'Gol campaign. He and Korax are tasked with crushing Rak'Gol warships and encircling the enemy’s second War Moon, though witnessing Sandman’s battle with Rak'Gol Prime forces Mortarion to confront the limits of his own alchemy and Primarch power 153.
Mortarion also supports the wider Imperial front by taking over the right-wing battlefield so the battered Alpha Legion can regroup 161.
Nurgle’s Invitations and Typhon’s Betrayal
Repeated Warp-corrupted worlds draw Mortarion into conflict with Nurgle’s forces. He recognizes the pattern as a deliberate invitation and responds with systematic extermination campaigns rather than allowing corruption to spread through the Death Guard 186 187 188.
Typhon eventually leads the Legion toward Nurgle’s Garden and reveals his allegiance to Nurgle. The traitor fleet attacks the withdrawing Death Guard, shattering its formation and inflicting devastating losses, including the near-destruction of Garo’s Seventh Grand Company 202 205 210.
Acceptance of Warp Essence
After returning from the betrayal, Mortarion learns that conventional warfare cannot kill Nurgle. Sandman tells him that he must accept his own Warp essence before he can take part in the larger plan against the Chaos God 210.
On Savior Star, Korax repeatedly defeats Mortarion and renders even his Primarch-wounding poisons ineffective. Mortarion finally abandons his denial and begins studying the Warp nature he had long resisted 218.
Dark Crusades and Nurgle’s Fall
Mortarion expands the Death Guard to more than 600,000 Astartes and repeatedly launches offensives into the Warp against Nurgle’s Garden. His third attempt reaches its depths, after which the Imperium loses contact with him 230.
Korax later leads a decade-long effort to rescue Mortarion from Nurgle’s domain. With Aisha’s aid, the brothers challenge Nurgle; Mortarion’s efforts are subsequently credited with hollowing out Nurgle’s power before the Chaos God’s death 231 275.
Tyranid Countermeasures
After gaining Nurgle’s former biological authority, Mortarion becomes central to the Imperium’s anti-Tyranid strategy. He is tasked with creating new bio-phages and a proposed “hunger agent” intended to accelerate Tyranid consumption and force the Great Devourer’s response 286 287.
Notable Quotes
“I have never yielded, and no one can make me yield!” 91
“The Death Guard will protect every Imperial world in the Storm Sector!” 218
Trivia
- Mortarion wished to preserve Barbarus’s toxic character after its liberation, even considering a decree allowing its people to make only their own gas masks rather than fully purify the world 75.
- The Death Guard’s silent advance is a reflection of Mortarion’s own methods: no battle cries, only deliberate marching and sustained extermination 71 146.
