Background & History
Golden Toad Son was born in the modern world, but his birth drew the attention of an elder master from Longhu Mountain. He became the master's Daoist disciple before he was one month old, was sent to Longhu Mountain after being weaned, and entered the Lost City at approximately five years old to continue cultivating under his master. Although he is not and cannot become an Initiate, he can freely enter and leave the Lost City. 568
He first contacts Xiao Ran telepathically on Bone Spirit Street, asking to be rescued from his predicament. Xiao Ran considers him a dangerous unknown, but Golden Toad Son's knowledge of Xiao Ran's parents and his offer to guide him to the Land of Ultimate Return eventually establish their partnership. 546 569
During their first formal meeting, the pair are trapped in Mama Xi's Sleeve Universe. When pressed about his identity, Golden Toad Son claims to be the Jade Emperor—a statement Xiao Ran does not accept at face value. 560
While trapped in the Ghost Capital, Golden Toad Son is transformed into a stone statue within a shrine. He remains petrified for two months, uses the Tiger Demon to search for Xiao Ran's group, and protects a settlement of native humans from evil spirits without losing his sanity. 727
He later uses his Daoist rites and burns his golden blood to forcefully invoke divine power against the Ghost Capital's demon gods. The effort leaves his petrified body severely weakened and his consciousness unresponsive. 753 757 Xiao Ran ultimately revives him by placing a lotus seed given by Di Ting into the statue; the statue breaks apart and Golden Toad Son emerges from a lotus bud in a new body. 793
Appearance
Golden Toad Son initially appears as a delicate, youthful Taoist with a porcelain-doll-like face and conspicuous Taoist robes. After his resurrection through the Earth Store Golden Lotus, his facial features become more angular and mature. 567 800

Golden Toad Son is composed, theatrical, and fond of presenting himself as an unfathomable Daoist master. He regularly boasts about his lineage, talent, and future potential, though Xiao Ran often mocks him for being captured or needing rescue despite such claims. 560 605
Behind the posturing, he is perceptive and pragmatic. He recognizes the dangers of manipulating fate, accurately reads unusual Daoist artifacts and formations, and advises caution when others are tempted by suspicious treasures. 573 806 809 931
He is also sociable and highly adaptable to modern life, readily posing for photographs and attracting attention despite his Taoist identity. He attributes his frequent romantic entanglements to unusually strong “romantic luck,” while claiming his master placed a spell on him to preserve his vows. 567 568
