Background / History
Li Ke saves Mai from a fatal condition, after which she identifies herself as a Shiranui Style ninja and offers him a formal dogeza in gratitude 69. Her earliest decisions around Li Ke are complicated by her attachment to Andy; she initially resists entering a relationship with Li Ke and volunteers for a dangerous repatriation experiment instead 95.
After learning that her arrival in the Demon Slayer world is connected to her Power of Seven Days to Die, Mai chooses to remain and help rather than immediately seek a way home. She joins the Demon Slayer Corps to understand the world and confront its threats 158. Her encounters with Yaoguai force her to confront the limits of her human-focused fighting style and motivate her to seek the strength needed to fight beside Li Ke 179 180.
Mai later makes preserving and revitalizing the Shiranui Style her shared project with Li Ke. She teaches him its fundamentals and secret techniques, while he challenges dojos and publicly represents the style 180 183 404 406. After returning to her home world, she reunites with her temporarily revived grandfather and parents, who are able to meet Li Ke and witness her changed life 373 374 377.
Appearance
Mai is a voluptuous female fighter whose traditional Shiranui Style combat attire remains intentionally revealing because of the school’s historical ninja practices 158 170.
- Wields folding fans with refined-steel ribs 167.
- Uses the traditional Shiranui Style martial arts uniform, originally suited to infiltration, seduction, and survival during ninja operations 158 170.
- Produces a visible Ki aura and flame effects when fighting seriously 179 181.
Personality
Mai is driven by a strong sense of justice. She habitually acts as a chivalrous hero, opposes those who prey on the weak, and treats aiding others as part of the Shiranui Style’s honor 159. She takes the survival of her family’s martial art personally, repeatedly worrying over its fading reputation, limited competitiveness, and future disciples 168 170.
She is proud of her skills and dislikes being treated solely as someone to protect. Her initial hostility toward Li Ke softens as she recognizes both her reliance on him and his sustained support for the Shiranui Style 167 181. Mai is also openly jealous and possessive in their relationship, especially regarding her position as Li Ke’s first wife and the mother of his first child 196 410 429.
Abilities & Skills
Shiranui Style Martial Arts
The Shiranui Style is a secret-technique school combining taijutsu, Ki circulation, acrobatic movement, and fire-based attacks. Mai teaches its practical fundamentals through body mechanics, defensive reactions, energy control, and counterattack methods refined across generations 180.
- Specializes in agility, rapid directional changes, spinning attacks, and exploiting openings 179 180.
- Can reorient herself in mid-air, a core component of the style’s movement techniques 180.
- Is highly effective against human opponents and can defeat multiple armed soldiers when terrain permits it 179.
- Her style’s emphasis on agility leaves her at a disadvantage against opponents with overwhelmingly greater strength, endurance, or supernatural power 168 180.
Ki-Fire Ninjutsu
Mai converts Ki into fire and uses it through close combat and projectile techniques. The Shiranui Style’s fire carries the heat of flame while retaining the cutting properties of Ki 168.
- Channels Ki through folding fans for thrown attacks 167.
- Uses gunpowder alongside her refined-steel fans to strengthen her flames and cutting power 168.
- Can kill lesser Yaoguai with Ki-infused fan attacks 167.
- Her fire consumes relatively little energy compared with the equivalent output of Demon Slayer breathing techniques 179.
Dance of the Nine-Tailed Fox
Mai’s signature technique plants fiery Ki within a target before detonating it from inside. Its full form is intended to create nine internal fire imprints and a resulting pillar of flame 180 183.
- Combines aerial movement, close-range strikes, and delayed internal detonation 180.
- Mai can currently create only four fire imprints rather than the technique’s intended nine, due to limits in her stamina and total Ki 183.
- The technique represents the central principle of the Shiranui Style: using movement and strikes to implant flame energy before triggering a decisive explosion 180.
Instruction and Style Preservation
Mai possesses the Shiranui Style’s inherited technical knowledge and is willing to transmit it to preserve the school.
- Teaches Li Ke the basics of Shiranui footwork, force generation, energy circulation, and defensive responses 180.
- Explains secret techniques involving injecting Ki into an opponent’s body to increase destructive power and affect the opponent’s Ki 183.
- Supports the revised Shiranui Style’s transition from a closed ninja tradition toward a public martial art capable of attracting new students 415.
Limitations
- Mai considers herself a second- or third-rate fighter within her home world because her physical resilience and Ki output cannot match fighters with stronger innate powers or bloodlines 168 179.
- In a spar with Mitsuri Kanroji, she demonstrates superior speed and skill, but the assessment afterward concludes that several Hashira fighting together could overwhelm her 179 180.
- She recognizes that she is not strong enough to confront the most powerful Yaoguai alongside Li Ke without becoming a liability 180.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Refined-steel folding fans — Mai’s primary weapons; used for melee strikes, thrown attacks, and channeling Ki-fire techniques 167 179.
- Gunpowder — Used to supplement the destructive force of her fire attacks 168.
- Shiranui Style secret records — Her family’s archives preserve material on demons, vampires, Orochi, and the school’s former role as demon slayers 404.
Relationships
- Li Ke — Her rescuer, student, collaborator in reviving the Shiranui Style, and eventual husband. Their relationship develops from conflict and distrust into reliance, affection, and marriage 69 181 374 412.
- Andy — Her former romantic attachment. Mai later concludes that much of what she felt for him was reliance and fear rather than love; Andy and Mai are confirmed to have separated by the tournament period 182 466 467.
- Hanzo Shiranui — Her grandfather and former guardian. Mai wants him revived long enough to attend her wedding, see the Shiranui Style restored, and meet her future children 373 374.
- Mai’s parents — Temporarily revived alongside Hanzo, allowing Mai to reunite with them despite her faded childhood memories 377.
- Shinobu Kocho — A Demon Slayer Corps associate who helps mediate Mai’s request to assess her strength 179.
- Mitsuri Kanroji — Sparring partner whose match with Mai reveals both Mai’s technical strengths and her limits against supernatural enemies 179 180.
- Tengen Uzui — Initially mistakes her for a female ninja; later provides information about Yaoguai and assesses her combat level 158 180.
- Tifa — A companion involved in the Shiranui Style’s future; Li Ke intends for her to help train disciples and act as an image ambassador for the school 384 399.
- Shiranui Kasumi — A ninja accepted into the Shiranui Style’s orbit; Mai is protective of her own status within Li Ke’s household when Kasumi seeks to bear his child 410.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Demon Slayer World
Mai learns why she was brought to the world and chooses to join the Demon Slayer Corps rather than focus only on returning home 158. Her battles against Yaoguai and spar with Mitsuri Kanroji make clear that her skills are formidable against people but insufficient for the world’s strongest monsters 167 179 180.
Shiranui Style Revival
Determined to preserve her family’s legacy, Mai recruits Li Ke as a prospective inheritor and insists that he compete under the Shiranui Style’s name 180. She teaches him the school’s techniques, while he critiques its weaknesses and eventually revises its curriculum for broader public training 180 183 403.
Family Reunion and Marriage
When Li Ke returns to Mai’s home world, he revives Hanzo Shiranui and Mai’s parents for a limited period. Mai introduces Li Ke to her family, accepts their marriage publicly, and later entrusts him with the family’s assets 374 377 383. Their relationship is consummated after Li Ke fulfills the conditions tied to marrying into the Shiranui Style 404 412.
World Martial Arts Tournament
Li Ke challenges established dojos to build the Shiranui Style’s reputation without turning it into a public enemy of Japanese martial artists 404 406. His success draws crowds, reporters, and prospective students to the Shiranui dojo, fulfilling Mai’s ambition to restore the school’s prominence 474 504.
Dojo Management
As the Shiranui Style grows, Mai becomes increasingly independent in handling its affairs. Li Ke entrusts her with the dojo’s renovation, land documents, and later student recruitment 482 504.
