Background / History

Nagato, Konan, and Yahiko were Jiraiya's disciples and founded the original Akatsuki as a peace organization. Their efforts threatened Hanzō of the Salamander's interests, leading Hanzō and Danzō to destroy the group and kill Yahiko. Yahiko's death drove Nagato to fully unleash the Rinnegan and transformed Akatsuki's methods from pursuing justice to imposing peace through force. 235

Following the tragedy, Nagato adopted the identity of Pain and led an Akatsuki composed of S-rank rogue ninja. His revised plan was to gather the tailed beasts, create an ultimate weapon, and force the Shinobi World to understand peace through pain and fear. 235

The Rinnegan's burden left Nagato physically frail and dependent on a wheelchair. Although he possessed exceptional Uzumaki chakra reserves, the eyes were not originally his, preventing him from accessing their full potential and steadily damaging his body. 254 281

Appearance

Before his recovery, Nagato was severely weakened by the Rinnegan and usually remained in a wheelchair while remotely operating the Six Paths of Pain. 254 273

  • His original body was frail enough that prolonged Rinnegan use threatened to kill him. 254 288
  • Spiral White Zetsu's fusion restored his ability to walk and repaired much of his depleted condition. 289
  • His Rinnegan were later replaced with a pair of Three-Tomoe Sharingan. 364

Personality

Nagato initially viewed himself as a god empowered to end war. He held the great nations responsible for exploiting weaker countries, believed peace could only be achieved through shared suffering, and intended to deter conflict through overwhelming fear. 256 268

His confidence frequently became arrogance. He underestimated Senju Hashirama, dismissed Obito as a future threat, and pushed his damaged body beyond its limits rather than concede defeat or abandon his claim to godhood. 254 270 272

Despite his ruthlessness, Nagato retained a reluctance to harm civilians when avoidable. He allowed Konoha to move the battle away from its population center and repeatedly prioritized Konan's safety over Akatsuki's objectives, even offering himself in exchange for her freedom. 269 276

After being defeated by Konoha and learning that he was merely a pawn carrying another's eyes, Nagato abandoned his godhood. He accepted that Yahiko's original peace plan could not succeed through tailed-beast deterrence and chose a quieter future with Konan and Yahiko. 296 298 363

Abilities & Skills

Rinnegan

Nagato wielded the Rinnegan through remote control of the Six Paths of Pain. Its power made him one of Akatsuki's strongest members, but his lack of Uchiha lineage and the eyes' enormous chakra demand prevented him from using advanced Rinnegan techniques such as Tengai Shinsei or Limbo: Border Jail. 270 281

  • Could distribute vision and chakra through six corpse puppets known as the Six Paths of Pain. 254 255
  • Used the Rinnegan to sense and control the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. 273
  • Had enough power to overwhelm the Fourth Raikage and Killer B, capture the Eight-Tails, and repel four Kage after his physical restoration. 257 258 308
  • The Rinnegan's strain left him vulnerable in prolonged battles and contributed to his physical collapse. 254 265 288

Six Paths of Pain

Nagato controlled six bodies from a hidden location, allowing him to attack while keeping his real body out of direct danger. The bodies could be summoned back to him and redeployed during a retreat. 254 273 274

  • Deva Path — used Shinra Tensei, Banshō Ten'in, and Chibaku Tensei; Shinra Tensei had a five-second interval between uses. 257
  • Asura Path — possessed a mechanized body capable of firing missiles and lasers and deploying saw blades. 255
  • Animal Path — summoned massive creatures and transported the other Paths into combat. 254 255
  • Human Path — extracted souls and read memories to locate targets. 255
  • Naraka Path — restored the destroyed Asura Path through King Yama's ability. 256
  • Preta Path — assisted Nagato in restraining Darui during Akatsuki's ambush on the four Kage. 308

Shinra Tensei and Chibaku Tensei

Nagato's Deva Path techniques formed the core of his battlefield control.

  • Shinra Tensei generated overwhelming repulsion capable of blasting the Fourth Raikage and Killer B through numerous buildings. 257
  • He used a maximum-output Shinra Tensei to force an escape route when Konan was endangered by Konoha's Kage-level fighters. 276
  • Chibaku Tensei was used to seal the Eight-Tails, though the effort consumed Nagato's life force. 257 258
  • Senju Hashirama later destroyed Nagato's Chibaku Tensei with Sage Art: Wood Release True Several Thousand Hands. 270

Demonic Statue of the Outer Path

Refusing to retreat from Hashirama, Nagato summoned the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path and used it as his final major weapon. 272 273

  • The statue employed Demonic Statue Lightning and Chakra Dragon. 273
  • Its strength depended heavily on Nagato's own chakra and control. 273
  • Hashirama sealed it temporarily with Sage Art: Gate of the Great God and Enclosing the Crate Hand. 273

Spiral White Zetsu Fusion

Spiral White Zetsu merged with Nagato when he was near death, restoring his mobility and replenishing his damaged body. 288 289

  • Allowed Nagato to walk again after years of physical decline. 289
  • Altered his chakra, tripling the power of his standard Shinra Tensei while halving its chakra consumption. 308
  • Did not remove Nagato's suspicion toward Black Zetsu and Obito. 289 302

Impure World Reincarnation

After losing the Rinnegan, Nagato used the Impure World Reincarnation technique to bring Yahiko back. 364

  • Worked alongside Uchiha Jin in the Ice-Snow Space of Amenominaka. 364
  • Yahiko's revival fulfilled Nagato's condition for returning the Rinnegan. 363 364

Relationships

  • Yahiko — Childhood companion, co-founder of the original Akatsuki, and the person whose death triggered Nagato's descent into Pain. Nagato ultimately sought only a peaceful life with Yahiko and Konan; Yahiko was revived through Impure World Reincarnation. 235 363 364
  • Konan — Closest surviving friend and Nagato's foremost priority. He repeatedly risked his own life to protect her, while she persuaded him to abandon the tailed-beast deterrence plan and join Konoha. 276 297 298
  • Jiraiya — Former teacher of Nagato, Yahiko, and Konan. Jiraiya's teachings influenced their creation of Akatsuki, though Nagato's group was later destroyed after their ideals collided with the Shinobi World's realities. 235
  • Uchiha Jin — Initially Nagato's enemy during the assault on Konoha; later the person Nagato chose to trust with his future. Jin exposed the truth of Nagato's Rinnegan and arranged Yahiko's resurrection after Nagato surrendered the eyes. 274 298 363 364
  • Senju Hashirama — The opponent who decisively shattered Nagato's belief in his own godhood. Hashirama overwhelmed the Six Paths, countered Chibaku Tensei, and sealed the Demonic Statue. 269 270 273
  • Obito — Akatsuki associate whom Nagato distrusted. Nagato considered Obito useful before the tailed beasts were collected but intended to eliminate him afterward; Obito later rescued Nagato from Konoha. 254 279
  • Black Zetsu — An intelligence provider and manipulator who regarded Nagato as a pawn meant to nurture the Rinnegan and eventually resurrect Madara. Nagato became aware that the Rinnegan were abnormal and no longer truly his. 266 289 296
  • Uchiha Madara — The original owner of Nagato's Rinnegan and the source of a curse seal placed upon Nagato. Madara viewed reclaiming the eyes as natural, while Nagato eventually returned them to Uchiha Jin instead. 275 289 362 363

Story Role / Major Arcs

Akatsuki's Early Tailed-Beast Campaign

After Orochimaru's defection exposed Akatsuki's plans, Nagato accelerated the organization’s timetable. He assigned teams to capture the tailed beasts and sent Obito against the Four-Tails and Five-Tails while he and Konan targeted the Eight-Tails. 189 208

Akatsuki captured the One-Tails, Two-Tails, Four-Tails, and Seven-Tails in its initial campaign. Nagato later led the assault on Kumogakure, breached its barrier through the Six Paths, defeated the village's defenders, and sealed the Eight-Tails. 209 254 258

Assault on Konohagakure

Following the Fourth Raikage's death and the threat of a Shinobi Alliance, Nagato ordered Akatsuki to openly attack the great nations. He personally led the Six Paths of Pain against Konohagakure, declaring himself a god and demanding the Nine-Tails. 267 268

Konoha transferred the battle to the Valley of the End, where Hashirama exposed the gap between Nagato's Rinnegan and a true top-tier combatant. Nagato summoned the Demonic Statue and exhausted himself attempting to prove his godhood, while Uchiha Jin located his real body. 269 270 273

Nagato attempted to retreat after Konan was threatened, but Konoha's combined force overwhelmed the Six Paths. His maximum Shinra Tensei created an escape opening, yet Minato captured Konan and sealed her chakra. Obito subsequently extracted the exhausted Nagato with Kamui. 274 276 279

Covert Cooperation with Konoha

Determined to rescue Konan, Nagato delayed Madara's reanimation and began reconsidering his goals. Konan revealed Konoha's plan for long-term unification, and Nagato acknowledged that his own deterrence-based peace was futile. 287 297 298

Nagato agreed to cooperate with Uchiha Jin while outwardly maintaining Akatsuki activity. He used Akatsuki's name to keep the Shinobi World unstable, delay a united opposition, disrupt the Five Kage Summit, and conceal his defection from Obito and Black Zetsu. 299 302 305

Defection and New Life

Nagato and several Akatsuki members eventually arrived in Konoha, where he was welcomed alongside Konan and later reunited with the resurrected Yahiko. His genuine smile at Konoha's peace marked his break from Akatsuki's former path. 345

He returned the Rinnegan in exchange for Yahiko's resurrection. Uchiha Jin transplanted Three-Tomoe Sharingan into Nagato, after which Nagato could finally pursue the quiet life he wanted with Yahiko and Konan. 363 364 365
