Green flames rose in the fireplace, and a billowing black robe stepped out from within. The old man in starry pajamas looked up, his bright eyes carrying a penetrating gaze toward the newcomer.
"Ravenclaw, Lin Yue." Professor Snape uttered these two words simply.
Headmaster Dumbledore paused. "Miss Lin Yue? What about her? Minerva and Filius both speak highly of her."
"She's using Legilimency." Professor Snape drawled, speaking with finality.
"Legilimency?" Headmaster Dumbledore leaned forward, folding his hands on the desk. "A child so young, capable of mastering Legilimency?"
"It's the only possibility. Her eyes are hollow, vacant, and her face carries no emotion at all. Her level of Legilimency is very good."
Headmaster Dumbledore stood up and paced slowly around his office.
"Very well, Severus. Keep an eye on this child."
Professor Snape's mouth twitched slightly. "I thought you'd want me to keep a closer eye on that Potter."
"I'll see to Harry's safety myself. We should pay more attention to those who might be somewhat dangerous, shouldn't we?"
Headmaster Dumbledore stopped pacing, lowering his head to look at Professor Snape over the rims of his glasses. "You know, Severus, this is to protect Harry, and also to protect Lily's sacrifice."
Professor Snape's eyes flickered for an instant, then returned to emptiness.
He nodded vaguely, tossed a pinch of Floo Powder into the fireplace, and stepped in.
"I'll keep an eye on her," he said in the last moment before his figure vanished.
After Snape left, Headmaster Dumbledore walked alone to the chair behind his desk and sat down.
"Legilimency..." he murmured to himself, head bowed. Excellent academic performance, outstanding talent, almost every professor who'd taught her liked her, and now this—Legilimency on top of it all.
Could she be another Tom? A hint of weariness mixed with sharpness flickered in Headmaster Dumbledore's eyes.
The person being suspected of potentially being the next Tom—Lin Yue—was at that moment reading the three books Professor McGonagall had recommended to her.
Transfiguration is indeed more difficult than Charms, Lin Yue calmly judged in her mind.
It wasn't until her bedtime that she barely managed to finish the three books, memorizing all the content within. As for fully mastering it, that would probably take some more time.
After adding three more bruises to her left arm, Lin Yue lay down on her bed fully clothed.
In the following days, Lin Yue continued to maintain excellent performance, earning points from professors in every class.
Hogwarts first-year courses weren't many, so she spent a great deal of time in the Hogwarts Library.
This even made Professor Snape, who had been observing her intentionally or otherwise during free periods, feel somewhat bored.
This little troll—well, he had to admit, this Lin Yue might not be a troll after all.
This young girl devoted all her free time to the library, and when she read there, she showed no selectivity whatsoever.
Instead, she started from the first bookshelf, the first book on the first row, and read them one by one, cover to cover.
She carefully flipped through every page of every book, and even so, her reading speed far exceeded that of ordinary people.
This inevitably made Professor Snape doubt whether she was actually reading seriously.
But after these few days of observation, he finally decided to give up keeping an eye on this young girl.
It was pointless. He'd be better off returning to his office and brewing a couple more cauldrons of potions.
With that thought, he turned and left without hesitation, leaving only the trace of a black robe billowing around the corner outside the library.
Just before curfew, Lin Yue closed her book, checked out the unfinished one from Madam Pince, and quickly returned to her dormitory.
In the dormitory, Qiuzhang and Marietta were having a pleasant conversation amid their homework.
When they saw Lin Yue return, they paused briefly to greet her, then continued chatting.
Over these few days of living together, they'd figured out that when Lin Yue was reading or studying, no external sound could distract her.
Unless you tapped her on the shoulder or called her by her full name, anything you said would be completely ignored.
So now Qiuzhang and Marietta could finally enjoy chatting happily in the dormitory again.
Sitting at her desk and opening her book, Lin Yue continued reading where she'd left off.
She didn't get up from her seat once, not even when Qiuzhang and Marietta finished bathing and went to bed.
They exchanged a glance and sighed, then silently drew their bed curtains.
They'd finally figured it out now—Lin Yue wasn't just someone who loved studying; studying was practically her life, and she even acted as if studying mattered more than her life itself.
Tomorrow was Friday, and the weekend would soon arrive. Maybe by the weekend... Lin Yue would take a rest, Qiuzhang thought to herself as she pulled up her covers.
Of course, at that moment, she had no idea that Lin Yue would use the two weekend days to read through an entire bookshelf's worth of books in the Hogwarts Library.
After breakfast, carrying her schoolbag to the greenhouse where Herbology class was held, Lin Yue reached out and pulled the greenhouse door twice. It didn't open.
Expressionless, she withdrew her hand and stood still in place, motionless as if frozen.
After a dozen seconds, she opened her bag, pulled out her Herbology textbook, and began reviewing again.
When the Little Eagles and Little Badgers arriving later saw Lin Yue reading again, they couldn't help feeling a flush of heat on their faces.
Someone so outstanding worked so hard, and they... So every little wizard present silently pulled out their Herbology textbooks and began reading with heads bowed.
All the students standing in front of the greenhouse reading with their heads down was practically a spectacle at Hogwarts—at the very least, it shocked the Gryffindor Little Lions and Slytherin Little Snakes taking Flying class on the nearby lawn quite thoroughly.
"Merlin's library... I could understand if it was just Ravenclaws who love reading, but Hufflepuffs too?" Ron stared in disbelief at the bizarre sight of every student in front of the greenhouse with their heads buried in books.
Hermione rolled her eyes unceremoniously and shot back, "Maybe only a very small number of people don't like studying?"
Ron's face twisted in pain as he frowned and retorted, "Fine, at least I know you're not one of that small number."
Harry, on the other hand, had no time to join their conversation. He was busy staring curiously at the broomsticks on the ground, feeling an odd sense of familiarity and warmth from them.
After their brief exchange, Hermione and Ron both fell silent. Hermione's gaze swept past the other Ravenclaws and Hufflepuffs, finally landing on Lin Yue at the very front of the crowd.
Watching that girl, who was reading with the stillness of dead water, Hermione felt certain that the one who had driven so many people to study at once must be Lin Yue.
Her thoughts didn't linger long. Madam Hooch had already arrived on the lawn.
Since the little wizards were universally excited about flying class, everyone had already gathered even before the lesson officially started.
Madam Hooch looked at the eager little wizards, pulled out her whistle, and gave a sharp blast. She decided to start teaching them how to mount their broomsticks early, just in case some impatient kid couldn't resist flying off on their own.
"Everyone, stand beside your broomstick. Place your hand over it and say, 'Up.'"
Following Madam Hooch's instructions, Hermione stood beside a broomstick, held her hand above it, and said in clear, precise tones, "Up."
The broomstick didn't move. Hermione took a deep breath and tried various tones of voice. Finally, perhaps sensing her impending impatience, the broomstick hopped up into her hand.
Looking at the broomstick in her grip, Hermione raised an eyebrow knowingly. "Well, I guess I don't have much flying talent."
She didn't feel the least bit discouraged. She'd already decided she didn't like flying anyway, having confirmed it while reading the relevant books.
Looking at the pictures of witches and wizards flying on broomsticks in those books, she had firmly concluded that she preferred keeping her feet on the ground.
"I'll count to three, then take off when you hear my whistle."
Madam Hooch began counting, but before she could even blow the whistle, Neville wobbled into the air, his face pale with terror.
His hands gripped the broomstick tightly, trembling uncontrollably as it carried him higher and higher. Madam Hooch kept shouting at him to calm down and descend slowly, but it was no use.
The little wizards present watched in horror, the air filled with Madam Hooch's shouts and Neville's terrified screams.
The commotion drew the attention of the Little Eagles and Little Badgers at the greenhouse entrance.
Closing their books and turning to look, the Little Eagles and Little Badgers all widened their eyes in unison. Only Lin Yue remained calm, still reading as if she hadn't heard a thing.
"Merlin! He's going to fall!"
"Madam Hooch is right there—she should save him, right..."
"Probably not. Flying class—Madam Hooch doesn't bring her wand. Didn't you see? She can only stand there and watch."
The Little Eagles and Little Badgers discussed anxiously, their faces pale, but no one had a solution. As Neville flew higher and higher, even crashing into the walls of Hogwarts Castle, their cries grew louder.
Finally, in the midst of the chaos, someone bumped heavily into Lin Yue, knocking her Herbology textbook to the ground.
Bending down to pick up the book, Lin Yue turned around just in time to see Neville fall from his broomstick.
Without a moment's hesitation, she drew her wand and aimed it at Neville, her arm tracking his descent with perfect precision.
"Wingardium Leviosa."
A voice like a machine sounded out. The Levitation Charm crossed the distance between the greenhouse entrance and the lawn, halting Neville's fall precisely and suspending him in midair.
Her wand slowly pointed toward the ground, and Lin Yue's charm gently lowered Neville to the earth.
The Little Eagles and Little Badgers all turned back to stare at Lin Yue as if she were some magical creature.
Neville wasn't a feather from Charms Class—he was a person of considerable weight. Not to mention the distance between here and there, and the fact that he had been falling at high speed.
Yet despite all that, Lin Yue had successfully and accurately cast the Levitation Charm on him, bringing him safely to the ground. For a first-year little wizard, that was simply incredible.
Expressionless, Lin Yue put her wand away, opened her book, and continued reading.
She didn't worry about whether Neville was frightened. She didn't worry about whether he had been hurt crashing into the wall.
She simply acted on instinct: when others were in danger, she would help if she could.
As for why she hadn't helped those students who were dragged away to be disposed of in front of her before—that was simple.
They were being disposed of because of the rules. When rules conflicted with instinct, she should strictly follow the rules.
Just like when Mother and Father told her that if her study time was wasted or her grades didn't reach perfection, she should punish herself.
Even if that conflicted with her instinct not to harm herself, she would still follow Mother and Father's rules, punishing herself over and over again.
The Little Eagles and Little Badgers, who had been thrilled by Lin Yue's rescue, were about to cheer—only to see her casually lower her head and go back to reading.
They instantly felt a lump in their throats, unable to make a sound.
They exchanged glances, then all simultaneously reopened their books. Might as well keep reading—what else could they do?
While they had calmed down, things were lively over at Gryffindor and Slytherin.
Madam Hooch immediately walked over, helped Neville—whom Lin Yue had set down—to his feet, warned everyone present, and then escorted the clearly shaken boy to the Medical Wing.
Hermione, along with many other Little Lions and Little Snakes, stared dumbfounded at Lin Yue, who was still reading in the distance.
Her magical ability... was it that strong? Hermione pressed her lips together, a pang of anxiety rising in her heart.
Compared to her, was she herself too lacking? When you have an excellent benchmark to measure yourself against, you can't help but compare.
Hermione was doing just that at this moment, taking a deep breath and tightening her grip on the flying broom. She silently resolved to study even harder, ideally figuring out how Lin Yue learned and then copying her approach.
No, perhaps she should study even harder than Lin Yue!
While her thoughts churned, Harry and Malfoy had already taken to the air, and Lin Yue had entered the greenhouse after Professor Sprout arrived.
Hermione watched Lin Yue walk into the greenhouse, then turned her gaze to Harry and Malfoy suspended midair.
As for Lin Yue, she had already taken her place in the front row of the Herbology classroom, her expression calm as she looked at Professor Sprout on the podium.
