Background / History

According to a school legend, the Four Founders arrived by boat and established Hogwarts on the far shore of the lake. Students still approach the castle by boat on their first arrival. 48

The castle preserves substantial remnants of its founders. Their portraits are considered part of Hogwarts and can know much of what the castle has witnessed; each Founder portrait also possesses a separate Secret Cabin, with Helga Hufflepuff's being the only one not deliberately hidden. 107

Beneath the castle lies an Underground Palace containing a colossal Dragon skeleton and statues of all four Founders. Ian learns that Hogwarts once housed dragons and that the school motto has an origin connected to them. 124
