Jon woke up at seven o'clock on the morning of September 1st.
Having spent one last night in his long-missed room, the time Jon got up was neither too early nor too late.
"Morning, Bella."
Bella was changing her shoes by the bedroom door as he spoke.
She wore a pair of black lambskin boots, and Jon's and her small suitcases sat beside her.
"Aunt was just about to send me upstairs to wake you. We're leaving soon, and since we have time, we can grab something to eat in London. God, I really want McDonald's right now."
Jon walked to the door and opened the shoe cabinet. Mrs. Smith had prepared a new pair of small leather shoes for him.
"Mom, aren't you coming with us?"
Jon asked as he changed his shoes.
"No, your father will take you two. I'm sure Bella will take good care of you."
A gentle smile appeared on Lin Smith's face. "I think I may need to make a trip to the hospital now."
"You and Dad work fast."
Jon muttered under his breath. With Mrs. Smith having come clean on her own initiative, he naturally knew that his mother was pregnant again. Wizards were always unusually sensitive to physical conditions.
He just did not know whether it would be a little brother or a little sister.
After settling brunch at a McDonald's near King's Cross Station, Jon and Bella entered King's Cross Station at around ten. Love had wanted to go in with them, but Jon refused.
"You can't get onto that platform without magic. Dad, wouldn't you feel sad? Wanting to go in so badly but not being able to—it would hurt, wouldn't it?"
No one knew a father better than his son. With a single sentence, Jon struck straight at Mr. Smith's heart and immediately snuffed out his father's little wish.
After waving goodbye to Love Smith, Bella turned and entered the station, then quietly asked Jon why he had refused to let Mr. Smith come in.
"My dad usually wants to know most about the Wizarding World. Letting him come in, but not letting him follow us onto the platform—or rather, even if we let him come, he still wouldn't be able to get in—that would be too cruel." Jon said calmly. He took out his ticket from his pocket and glanced at it before continuing, "Come on. We're going to Platform Nine and Three-Quarters."
Bella quietly followed beside Jon. Although she usually liked dragging Jon around to play, sometimes she genuinely could not keep up with his train of thought.
Perhaps Jon would get along well with those Hogwarts professors.
Jon did not pay attention to his cousin's wild thoughts. All his energy was focused on watching for any familiar faces nearby.
What he said was true, but it was not the whole explanation.
On one hand, he truly feared hurting Mr. Smith's feelings by letting him come in. On the other, he was afraid his father might run into the parents of other Hogwarts students.
For example, a certain enthusiastic Mrs. Weasley.
Since his family had no dealings with the Weasley Family to begin with, it was best not to get acquainted. Randomly forming ties with one of the Order of the Phoenix's main fighting forces was no good thing, especially when Ron Weasley, one of the main trio, would be enrolling next year.
King's Cross Station had a great deal of foot traffic. After all, it was Europe's largest train station and handled a considerable share of transportation needs. Since Jon already knew the story, finding the platform was naturally no challenge for him.
Bella, who was rather carefree by nature, did not notice anything unusual. After all, she had long since grown accustomed to Jon's "mature and steady" manner.
The time he had chosen to enter was quite good. At ten in the morning, there were not too many people, and they barely ran into any Hogwarts students. Even when the two slipped onto Platform Nine and Three-Quarters, Bella had not spotted a single familiar face.
"We came too early. The Express has only just arrived."
The cousins found a compartment on the train that had just pulled in. After placing their small suitcases beside the compartment wall, Jon heard Bella begin to complain.
"There are benefits to coming in early."
Watching the crowd on Platform Nine and Three-Quarters gradually thicken as Young Wizards pushed trolleys and carried huge suitcases in preparation to board, Jon said to Bella across from him, "Think about it. You board with all those Young Wizards lugging around heavy trunks, then you might have to help them carry something, and then everyone keeps thanking each other. Just thinking about it is a hassle."
Bella: "?"
Why is my cousin so cold?
All the other Young Wizards are so excited. Why are you so calm?
With such a precocious personality, he really ought to be sorted into Slytherin, shouldn't he?
It was difficult to express all those unspoken complaints through her eyes alone, so Jon received absolutely no message from his cousin—not even a trace. He merely sat in his seat, silently praying that he would not encounter or hear any familiar names.
But fate always loved playing jokes on him.
"Good afternoon, Bella, senior student."
After Jon had enjoyed a brief moment of peace, a gentle young voice sounded by his ear. He looked up and saw a handsome, mild-smiling boy standing at the compartment door with a large suitcase. "May I sit here? It's rare to run into someone I know."
"Oh, of course."
Bella instantly put on a bright smile, pulled the boy's suitcase inside, and introduced the two of them over the case positioned between Jon and the boy. "This is my cousin, Jon Smith. He's also a pure-blood wizard. Jon, this is Cedric. He's a Hufflepuff student too. Didn't you say you wanted to go to Hufflepuff? Hurry up and get to know him."
I said I wanted to go to Hufflepuff, not that you could use it to cozy up to someone. Before Jon had figured out who the boy in front of him was, he helplessly reached out to shake his hand and forced a smile.
"Jon Smith."
"Cedric Diggory."
"Oh, hello."
Jon withdrew his hand and let Cedric get dragged into conversation by his cousin, but he immediately came to his senses.
Cedric Diggory—what a familiar name!
He had been so preoccupied with avoiding Chang Cho of Ravenclaw that he had forgotten to be wary of boys.
But why did Cedric know Bella?
Jon gave Cedric, who was smiling gently across from him, an odd look, as though he could already see the star of death floating over the Hufflepuff Champion's head.
No matter how he looked at it, Bella seemed interested in this Cedric.
Puppy love was not a good thing. Later, he should find time to give his cousin a warning. There were so many handsome guys at Hogwarts—she could date a Slytherin if she wanted. That would still be better than dating someone destined to die, wouldn't it?
