Background / History
Gods and Devils era
The Heavenly Court's ancient predecessor was centered on the Nine Heavens Realm, a Heavenly Realm opened by Emperor Cangli and used as the hub of the Gods and Devils Heavenly Court. Its ruins retained an ancient Altar of Heaven capable of bearing sacrifices to the Heavenly Dao, making them indispensable to Dijun's later restoration project. 23
Dijun and Taiyi discovered the ruins as the vast Thirty-Three Heavens. The realm contained the preserved Cosmic Stars Grand Formation and enough space and resources to serve as the Yao Race's celestial base. 26
Yao Race Heavenly Court
After securing Dao Ancestor Hongjun's permission, Dijun and Taiyi gathered primordial creatures into the Yao Race and negotiated a division of interests with Fuxi and Nuwa before moving to establish the Heavenly Court. Hongjun warned that the Heavenly Emperor's position bore immense karmic burden and that violating the natural order would bring ruin. 27
A thousand years after occupying the Thirty-Three Heavens, Dijun, Taiyi, Fuxi, and Nuwa offered sacrifices at the Altar of Heaven. Dijun proclaimed the Court's purpose as regulating Yin-Yang, calming karmic Sinful Power, and restoring order after the destruction of the former Heavenly Court. Heavenly Dao assented, stabilizing the Yao Race's providence. 28
To strengthen its legitimacy, the Court later held a grand enthronement ceremony. Dijun, Taiyi, Fuxi, Nuwa, and Tengshe petitioned Heavenly Dao to formally establish the Court's orthodoxy and confirm the Heavenly Emperor's authority. 51 It invested visiting Great Divine Ability Users and Great Luo Dao Lords with nominal divine offices, bringing them into its system without securing their genuine loyalty. 52
The Court's rise provoked resistance from the Witch Race, the Purple Mansion Immortal Court, and independent great powers unwilling to become subjects of a Heavenly Emperor. 33 45 Its armies eventually mobilized against the Purple Mansion Immortal Court with ten million soldiers, four Late Quasi-Saint Heavenly Venerates, and the Cosmic Stars Grand Formation. 71 72
Re-establishment under Haotian and Yaochi
Following the destruction of the old Yao Race Heavenly Court, Hongjun summoned the Six Saints to choose a new ruler. He rejected their faction-backed candidates and appointed his attendants Haotian and Yaochi as Heavenly Emperor and Heavenly Empress because they lacked ties to the great clans, Human Race, and saintly sects. 139
Haotian and Yaochi inherited a shattered Thirty-Three Heavens: Lingxiao Treasure Hall was reduced to a charred foundation, while palaces and towers lay in ruins. Hongjun restored the celestial realm, rebuilt Lingxiao Treasure Hall, and enabled Yaochi's Innate Ren Shui Peach Tree to form a Peach Garden of 3,600 immortal peach trees. 142
The new Court initially struggled to recruit capable immortals. Its early applicants were mostly True Immortals and Mysterious Immortals; Tai Bai Jin Xing, at Primordial Unity Golden Immortal level, was the strongest recruit. 142
Divided imperial authority
At Haotian's enthronement banquet, the Six Heavenly Dao Saints acknowledged the Court, and Heavenly Dao gathered strands of the various races' destiny into its Sea of Luck Clouds. 147 Yuqing Primordial Heavenly Venerate then proposed dividing the Heavenly Emperor's authority among Six Imperial Heavenly Emperors, severely limiting Haotian's personal control. 147
The Northern Pole Ziwei Great Emperor was assigned authority over celestial phenomena, stellar movement, and the seasonal cycle, while other imperial positions controlled warfare, punishment, human registers, longevity, fortune, calamity, and creation. 147
During Haotian's reincarnation, the Saints adopted a system of rotating Heavenly Emperors to prevent any one ruler from accumulating excessive authority. Fuxi served as acting Heavenly Emperor, later yielding the throne after a kalpa of governing Yin-Yang and the stars; Shennong subsequently succeeded him. 179 195
Investiture of the Gods and the restored divine system
Hongjun described the Investiture of the Gods Calamity as a tribulation that would begin with mortal dynastic succession, intensify through the killing of immortals, and end by reshaping the Heavenly Court. The Investiture of the Gods Scroll and God-Beating Whip were designated as the foundation of the new celestial order. 237
After the calamity, Jiang Ziya enfeoffed 365 Righteous Gods and 84,000 constellations of malevolent stars. Their appointments stabilized the laws of Heaven and Earth and incorporated the Four Seas, Eight Wastelands, mountains, and rivers into the Court's jurisdiction. 304
With the divine positions filled, Lingxiao Treasure Hall became firmly established, the Netherworld regained order, and the Heavenly Court became the Heavenly Dao hub operating the Three Realms. 305
