Chapter 7: Engaging the Enemy
1943, during World War II.
Led by German Chancellor Adolf Hitler, the Nazi Party's army launched a large-scale invasion of Europe.
Kyle, as a new recruit, was directly assigned to the 102nd Regiment of the 6th Marine Division, which was encamped in the front-line area.
In the afternoon, a military transport plane arrived to pick up personnel from the training base. Kyle arrived in the front-line area around 9 PM. As soon as the transport plane reached the airspace above the temporary camp of the Operations Department, he understood why he had been urgently dispatched.
Looking down from the plane, under the light of more than a dozen warm, dim lamps, the tents and military supplies in the temporary camp were set up in a chaotic mess. The officers and soldiers within were like ants on a hot pan.
"Those Nazi madmen are still desperately pushing forward, requesting an increase in ammunition support!"
"Someone help me lift this medical stretcher!"
"Where are the personnel? Hasn't anyone arrived from the rear yet?!"
"All units, proceed to the combat zone for reinforcement! We cannot let them tread another inch of European territory!"
The operations officer commanded hoarsely through a loudspeaker, while the cries of wounded soldiers with severed limbs were continuously carried into the tents by medics using medical stretchers. Soldiers covered in blood carried new ammunition and equipment from the rear, got into mud-splattered military vehicles, and drove headlong into the darkness towards the combat zone.
The US Army, always known for its strict discipline, was now in a state of utter disarray.
"Soldier! Are you a new reinforcement soldier?" A sweating, bearded officer approached and grabbed Kyle, who had just disembarked from the military helicopter.
"Yes, Soldier Kyle reporting," Kyle responded quickly.
"Just you, a new recruit? No need to report. We're short on personnel, so take your weapon and head straight to the battlefield! We'll sort out the paperwork later." The bearded officer said hurriedly, grabbing Kyle's backpack and tossing it beside a military tent, treating him as cannon fodder.
Indeed, for an inexperienced new recruit to go to a large-scale battlefield for the first time, it was usually a one-way trip!
"I understand." Kyle took a deep breath. He was already wearing his combat uniform and steel helmet. Holding his American Rifle, he directly jumped into the back of a military vehicle transporting supplies.
The four-wheel-drive military vehicle, without even stopping to cool down, rushed towards the front battle zone with supplies, its two front headlights piercing the darkness like poles.
Kyle gripped his American Rifle. As the sounds of bombing ahead of the military vehicle grew clearer, his heart rate and adrenaline surged.
"I don't think I'm scared—I feel a faint excitement?" Kyle muttered to himself. He had drawn so many ability cards, and over a dozen of them were for enhancing willpower.
Never mind, he should distract himself.
Kyle's gaze fell upon the supplies in the back of the vehicle. With a thought, a string of densely packed item cards appeared on the surface of the crates.
[Medical Stretcher]
[Emergency Medical Kit]
[Military Canned Supplies]
[American Grenade]
[American Rifle (generic term for US rifles)]
[Medium Caliber Rifle Ammunition Box]
These were all numerous white item cards, with a few green items interspersed among them, such as [High-Explosive Grenade], [High-Power Sniper Rifle], and [Short Rocket Launcher].
These item cards were different from before; they were all in a drawable state!
"So that's how it is," Kyle's eyes lit up. He murmured, "I cannot draw private items held by others. But these supplies are temporarily ownerless, so I can freely draw them and convert them into item cards to carry with me."
If it's free, why not take it?
Kyle immediately began to draw from the supplies on the vehicle, converting some of them into item cards to carry with him. After all, these were being hastily transported to the front lines for combat, and no one would notice if a few were missing.
However, he had assumed that green item cards, like green ability cards, would also require over three minutes to draw. To his surprise, drawing ownerless items took only three seconds.
"Five rocket launchers, taking two should be enough."
Kyle hesitated slightly as he drew the last item. Suddenly, a burst of intense gunfire erupted. The military vehicle's driver let out a scream, and the vehicle violently shook and crashed into an obstacle, coming to a halt.
Enemy attack!
Kyle reacted extremely quickly, his body immediately tensing. He quietly held his rifle, crouched down, and pressed himself against the rear wall of the vehicle's cargo hold, straining his ears to listen for sounds outside.
Thump thump thump
Several footsteps approached rapidly. Kyle quickly realized that the enemy didn't seem to intend to destroy the supply vehicle directly but rather to plunder it.
"They're reluctant to destroy the supplies in the vehicle; this is my chance." Kyle was exceptionally calm. The hundreds of combat skill and ability cards he possessed were perfectly displayed at this moment.
He held his rifle in his right hand, and with his left hand, he quietly opened it in the air. A green item card was quickly materialized from nothingness and held between his fingers.
Unlike ability cards, which could only be manifested through one's own skills, item cards were physical objects converted into cards. Therefore, item cards could be materialized and dematerialized, or directly converted back into their original items for use.
"Be careful, go take a look."
"Don't let your guard down."
Two enemy soldiers were communicating quietly in German, jogging towards the rear cargo hold of the military vehicle, which was covered with a green tarpaulin. Just as they were about to use their bayonet-tipped rifles to pry open the tarp, a round, black metal object was thrown out from inside.
"Damn it, a grenade!"
"Take cover!"
As soon as the words were spoken, the two German soldiers in the front were blown to pieces. As gravel and flesh splattered in the night, a figure rushed out from the rear cargo hold of the vehicle.
"Enemy spotted!"
The remaining three German soldiers, on alert not far away, shouted, tightened their triggers, and unleashed a barrage of fire towards the area behind the vehicle. The bullets all missed, striking the ground and the bodies of their comrades.
Too fast!
Under the cover of night and high-explosive grenades, Kyle's figure was too quick for them to lock onto. By the time they reacted and tried to find him, Kyle's fierce counterattack had already begun.
"Bang!"
A loud gunshot echoed from the darkness. The leading German soldier was directly shot in the forehead, his head exploding as red and white matter sprayed onto the other two.
Before the two soldiers could even confirm the direction of the shots in their panic, two more gunshots rang out.
No more, no less, a total of three shots. The gunshots were like the decree of death, and the remaining German soldiers soon became corpses lying on the ground.
"Not bad." Kyle emerged from behind a tree, cloaked by the night, and surveyed the bodies of the soldiers lying in pools of blood.
He had merely rushed out from the rear of the vehicle, his peripheral vision confirming the enemy's positions. After dodging the first wave of intense gunfire, he proceeded to precisely shoot them with his weapon.
His first-ever combat, a flawless five-against-one kill without taking any damage, was perfect.
"First kill." Kyle looked at a half-mutilated German soldier's corpse nearby, its eyes wide open, clearly dying with unfinished business.
His face was devoid of emotion, as cold as the god of death.
Kyle had expected that after his first kill, coupled with the extremely bloody scene before him, he would at least vomit.
But in reality, he felt nothing. His incredibly resolute heart told him that if he hadn't killed them, he would now be lying on the ground, a cold corpse.
"It's not for some American justice of defending home and country. I'm just doing it for myself. And to establish a career and stand firm in this world while staying alive," Kyle said coldly to the corpses on the ground. "You can only say you had terrible luck running into me."
All military items are not based on reality. For example, the appearance of special pistols or laser guns is very normal.
