Background and History

Zhunti and his senior brother Jieyin came from the Western Realm. Before attaining Sagehood, they joined East King Duke’s Purple Mansion Immortal Court and obtained territory there to spread their teachings 22 23. During its war with the Demon Race, the brothers took the Purple Mansion Three Prefectures and their inhabitants and fled 79.

At Mount Sumeru, they founded the Western religion and became two of the Six Saints designated by Dao Ancestor Hongjun 113. Zhunti subsequently tried to claim the Primordial Violet Qi released after Hongyun’s death. Tongtian stopped him, so Zhunti sent the Violet Qi into void turbulence rather than let Tongtian take it 121 122 245.

Appearance

Zhunti’s true body is a Bodhi Tree, an innate spiritual root kept at Mount Sumeru until Ancestor Minghe uprooted it 824 828 829.

• His enlarged Buddhist Dharma form has twenty-four heads and eighteen arms; its faces show expressions including compassion, rage, and majesty 862.
• Following his restoration by the Chaos Ancient Buddha, his body emitted a glass-like golden radiance 887.

Personality

Zhunti consistently seeks opportunities to increase the Western Teachings’ influence. He treats conflict in the East as an opening for Western expansion, and he is willing to change alliances when doing so serves that goal 153 346 586.

His repeated defeats by Qin Mu leave him both vengeful and wary. He openly seeks revenge after gaining new power, but fears facing Qin Mu without protection 428 869 887. With Jieyin, he is often the more forceful partner: he presses plans that Jieyin approaches cautiously, yet tries urgently to save Jieyin when the ancient gate beneath Mount Sumeru drains his blood 589 881.

Seven Treasures Wonderful Tree

Zhunti’s Dao-proving treasure is a supreme-grade Innate Spiritual Treasure. Its seven treasures can brush away other things, while it can draw power from the Western spiritual veins 230.

• Zhunti uses its seven-colored light to counter sword qi and attack opponents 662 666.
• His avatar channels the Western spiritual veins through it to increase its strength 230.
• After the tree is damaged, Zhunti uses a reconstructed fragment in an attempt to free Jieyin from the ancient gate 875 881.

Buddhist Manifestations

• Buddha Kingdom Pure Land — Zhunti’s avatar manifests it in battle in an attempt to convert Qin Mu 230.
• Golden Body and Dharma form — He uses a Buddhist Golden Body defensively; later, his true body expands into a vast, twenty-four-headed, eighteen-armed form 233 862.

Story Role and Major Arcs

• Underworld dispute — Zhunti joins Jieyin, Yuanshi, and Nuwa in seeking control of the newly formed Underworld. Qin Mu shatters Zhunti’s Golden Body, and the alliance fails to secure authority there 177 184 261.
• Conflict with Qin Mu’s disciple — Zhunti’s avatar attacks Kong Xuan, then battles Qin Mu. Qin Mu isolates and destroys the avatar, costing Zhunti a level of cultivation 227 232 234.
• Western expansion — Zhunti recruits Kunpeng, releases Dijun’s Golden Crow sons to provoke Witch–Demon conflict, and helps establish a Western Heavenly Court to challenge Qin Mu’s court 295 346 590 609.
• Collapse and ancient inheritance — after the Western Teachings lose their foundation, Zhunti and Jieyin discover an ancient Buddhist treasury beneath Mount Sumeru. They awaken the Chaos Ancient Buddha, whose blood restores and greatly increases their power 879 881 883 887.
• Western Qi battlefield — the newly strengthened brothers join the Western Qi camp under orders to collect the essence of those killed in battle for the ancient Buddha 887 889 890.
